Never mind mud, Calvin team dominates championship field

The NCAA News

Calvin conquered one of the muddiest trails in Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships history to post one of the event’s most dominating team victories.

The Knights placed five runners among the top 13 individual scorers to post the second-lowest winning total in championships history November 18 at Wilmington (Ohio). Calvin’s 37 points trails only the 32 points North Central (Illinois) posted in 1993.

Senior Tim Finnegan finished second overall individually to seal his place in school history as a member of three championship teams. Calvin now owns four team titles — all won since 2000.

All that dominance came on a trail soaked by about 5 inches of rain and dotted with pools of standing water.

"In absolutely horrible conditions, the guys ran through it," said co-coach Al Hoekstra. "They had no other choice. This was one of the best performances ever in Division III."

Six of Calvin’s seven runners claimed all-America honors, with sophomore Jed Christensen joining Finnegan in the top 10 overall with a fifth-place showing.

Finnegan challenged for the individual title but ultimately fell 10 seconds behind Widener senior Macharia Yuot, who claimed his first victory at the championships after two runner-up finishes.

"Tim Finnegan is amazing," Hoekstra said about the four-time all-American. "The consistency and leadership that he exudes is incredible."

Co-coach Brian Diemer had praise for Finnegan’s supporting cast, too.

"The way they had to run through the mud and standing water was a tough assignment," he said. "They put it all together and worked so well as a team to come out on top. To have six all-Americans on a sloppy day is incredible — they made moves and made cuts all day long to get into the position to win."

Those cuts and moves put the Knights 55 points ahead of their nearest challenger, runner-up New York University.

Yuot overcame not only the mud but an illness during the week before the championships to end a sparkling collegiate track and cross country career with his sixth NCAA individual title. The Sudanese native — who received an NCAA Inspirational Award two years ago after surviving an escape from his war-torn country to run in America — placed second in the cross country championships in 2003 and again last year.

He posted a time of 26 minutes, 31 seconds, for an average of five minutes, 21 seconds, per mile.

Yuot, who also has won three NCAA outdoor and two indoor track titles in distance events, celebrated the cross country victory a day later by competing in the Philadelphia Marathon — where he finished sixth.
