NCAA Double-A Zone

Aug 14, 2006 1:01:30 AM

As the most influential committees in the NCAA governance structure met at the national office August 2-3, the NCAA blog buzzed as people shared opinions about some of the most high-profile decisions.

After the Division II Presidents Council sponsored legislation to create two distinct championship brackets in football based on the number of offered equivalencies, bloggers offered opinions on the Double-A Zone ranging from a belief that a split will force top Division II football programs to jump to Division I to a concern that some programs will reduce scholarship opportunities.

The Division I Board of Directors’ resolution to uphold its previous decision to allow graduates with remaining eligibility to become immediately eligible after transferring to a new institution also generated debate. Bloggers also weighed in on the new labels for Division I’s two football subdivisions: "Football Bowl Subdivision" and "NCAA Football Championship Subdivision."

Participants also discussed the topic of four-year scholarships and whether full academic disclosure is necessary for student-athletes. Softball student-athletes chimed in about recommendations made by the Division I softball committee to limit the number of contests in the regular season.

Through Coaches’ Corner, Double-A Zone readers and listeners were introduced to Jon Duncan, head swimming and diving coach at Rhodes College. NCAA Associate Director of Education Outreach Curtis Hollomon shared some thoughts in the blog’s new Faces of the NCAA feature.
