Methodist’s monarchy over women’s golf continued May 9-12 with the school’s ninth straight Division III Women’s Golf Championships team title.

The Monarchs won the event at the par-73 El Campeon Course at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, by an all-divisions-record 76 strokes over Gustavus Adolphus. DePauw placed third, followed by Wartburg and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The previous record for team margin of victory was 74 strokes by Division II Florida Southern in 2002.

Methodist separated itself from the field early with a 308 first round that produced a 19-stroke lead. The Monarchs played a stroke better in Round 2 with an aggregate score of 307 and enjoyed a 37-shot cushion.

Though Methodist didn’t score as low in Rounds 3 and 4, the Monarchs still bested the second-place team each day by 17  and 15 strokes, respectively. Storms delayed Round 3 for five hours, but the tournament finished on schedule.

Besides the four Methodist scores, Gustavus Adolphus assembled the low team total of the tournament with a second-round 322.

With the team race decided early, the tournament’s suspense built in the quest for medalist honors. Not surprisingly, that, too, involved the Methodist team.

Defending champion Charlotte Williams essentially outlasted her teammates to win her second straight crown. She entered the final round with a five-shot lead over DePauw’s Sarah Gates, but fellow Monarchs Emily Ranney, Colleen Walsh, Katie Dick and Heather Martin lurked within striking distance.

Walsh closed the gap to two shots on the back nine, but she and teammate Dick ended up four strokes back, tied for second. Both shot final-round 76s, the best in the field, but Williams’ 79 was good enough to win. She stumbled on the front nine and was 6-over on the day after a triple bogey on the ninth hole, but she played the back nine in even par.

Gates tied for fourth with Franklin’s Katie Tewell.

The five Methodist golfers finished in the top eight spots. Ranney was sixth and Martin tied for eighth.
