Latest title as good as first for Wisconsin-La Crosse

Wisconsin-La Crosse bade farewell to departing coach Mark Guthrie by extending its record total of team championships to 10 at the Division III Men’s Track and Field Championships May 25-27 at Benedictine (lllinois).

Hurdler Marcus Walgrave and pole vaulter Matt Novak claimed the team’s only two event victories, but Walgrave’s victory in the 110-meter hurdles sparked a Wisconsin-La Crosse rally from 22 1/2 points behind on the final day of competition, and the Eagles ultimately cruised to a 20 1/2-point victory over defending champion Lincoln (Pennsylvania).

Wisconsin-La Crosse took the lead for good by scoring three runners for 16 points in the 400-meter dash, including Nate Olson’s runner-up finish.

“I’m very proud of our guys,” said Guthrie, who has led the Eagles to a total of 22 team titles, including 12 indoor championships. “They really had their backs against the wall after Thursday and Friday.”

Guthrie, who is leaving La Crosse after 19 years to become an assistant at Wisconsin, seemed to appreciate the effort more than most during his tenure.

“They always say you remember your first and last national titles and that’s definitely true for me,” he said.

While the Eagles were sending their mentor off in style, two record-posting runners offered their own memorable farewells to Division III competition.

Nick Symmonds of Willamette swept the 800- and 1,500-meter runs for the third time in four years, and became the championships’ first seven-time titlist with his fourth straight win at 800 meters.

Symmonds admitted he felt pressure as the pre-race favorite in his final event, especially against what he regarded as a more competive 800-meter field than last year.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be a cakewalk but everything came together at the right time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Macharia Yuot of Widener became only the third student-athlete to win three outdoor events in a year, capturing the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run. He tied the record set in 1988 by Simpson’s Kip Janvrin and matched in 1996 by Wisconsin-Stout’s Terry Anders.

“I just wanted to leave a mark that would be remembered,” Yuot said. “I wanted to show the next generation of runners that winning three distance events can be done. I wanted to show that if I can do it, somebody in the future can do it.”

Sprinter Greg Nixon of Howard Payne was the meet’s only other multiple titlist, doubling at 100 and 200 meters.
