Kenyon’s accumulation of men’s swimming titles reaches 27

Kenyon swam fast from the start and never looked back on its way to an unprecedented 27th consecutive Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title March 16-18 at Minnesota’s Aquatics Center. The Lords’ national championship streak is the longest in any NCAA sport.

Kenyon’s North Coast Athletic Conference rival Denison finished second, 153 points behind the Lords. Emory was third, followed by Johns Hopkins and Williams.

In all, Kenyon won nine of the meet’s 20 events. The Lords won both relays on the first day of the meet and swimmer-of-the-meet Andrejs Duda took the 200-yard individual medley crown to quickly dispel the notion that the Lords could be beaten. Duda would later win the 200-yard butterfly to give him nine career titles, tying him with UC San Diego’s Travis Miller for the most in Division III history. Miller compiled his from 1991 through 1994.

Kenyon extended its lead to 80 points after Day 2, during which the Lords won the 200-yard medley relay and Travis Brennion successfully defended his 400-yard individual medley title.

But Emory’s Justin Hake upset three-time defending champion Duda in the 100-yard butterfly, touching home in 48.15 to Duda’s 49.30. Duda was bidding to become only the seventh Division III male swimmer or diver to win a single event all four years.

Other Day 2 highlights included The College of New Jersey’s Steve Swenson winning the 100-yard breaststroke and Williams senior Will Cunningham winning the 100-yard backstroke for the third time in his career. Denison took the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:40.72, ending Kenyon’s nine-year run in the event.

It was all Kenyon on Day 3. Eric Dunn won the 1,650-yard freestyle, making it 16 years in a row that a Kenyon swimmer has won that event. Teammate Joseph Gosselar was a winner in the 200-yard breaststroke, and the Lords’ 400-yard freestyle relay team was victorious in the meet’s final event. Kenyon senior Jim Berger was a member of that and two other winning relay teams.

Other meet highlights included Mike Slavik of Washington-St. Louis winning his school’s first individual title in the 50-yard freestyle. Slavik’s teammate Eric Triebe finished second in that event and later won the 200-yard freestyle. Grove City’s Caleb Courage edged Triebe in the 100.

Mark Schmitt of North Central (Illinois) won the 200-yard backstroke and finished second in the 100-yard version, and Mike Salmon of Hamilton won both the one-meter and three-meter dives over defending champion Mike Shaw of Springfield.
