Emory defeated perennial contender Middlebury to collect the 2006 Division III Men’s Tennis Championships team title at Mary Washington May 21.

The Panthers followed up a 2004 title and a 2005 runner-up finish with a strong start in doubles competition, but couldn’t manage a win on the singles side. Middlebury’s Ari Beilin and Alex Scott won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, over the Eagles’ Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka. The Panthers sealed the doubles point when the No. 3 team of Salih Unsal and Brian Waldron defeated Emory’s Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman, 8-5.

The Eagles stormed back, however, capturing four singles points and the victory. Emory players won three of the singles matches in straight sets. Both Goodwin and Masuoka avenged their doubles loss by defeating their opponents. Masuoka dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nathan Edmunds at No. 3 singles. No. 1 singles competitor Goodwin added a second point by beating Waldron, 6-4, 6-2.

Kaufman battled for the third singles point at the No. 6 spot, losing the first set, 2-6, to Middlebury’s Scott but coming back to win, 6-4, 6-1. Emory earned its final point with a win at the No. 2 spot when Redmond defeated Beilin, 6-0, 6-4.

The Panthers finished runner-up for the second year in a row, losing in the 2005 championship match to UC Santa Cruz. They last won the title in 2004. Emory, which finished the year 22-3, took its most recent championship in 2003. Middlebury also ends with a 22-3 record.

Gustavus Adolphus won the third-place match over Williams.

In the individual portion of the championships, Bates senior Will Boe-Wiegaard defeated Waldron for the singles title, 6-4, 6-3. The UC Santa Cruz doubles team of senior Shane Templeman and junior Matt Seeberger won the doubles title, 6-4, 6-1, over Middlebury’s Beilin and Scott. Seeberger, then paired with Matt Brunner, won the 2005 doubles title as well.

Goodwin won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s rookie player of the year award, and Middlebury’s Waldron was recognized as the ITA senior player of the year. Daniel Greenberg of Williams was named the ITA national player to watch, and Edmunds received the Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.

Roger Follmer of Washington U. in St. Louis was named the ITA coach of the year. In five years at the institution, Follmer’s teams have posted a 54-28 record and have made the NCAA tournament each year.
