After dethroning perennial champion Kenyon last year in the Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Emory successfully defended its title this year in the closest team race in meet history.

The Eagles compiled 428 points, only 10 more than the 20-time-champion Ladies. Emory is the first repeat winner other than Kenyon since Williams in 1982 and 1983, the first two years of the championships. Kenyon won the meet for 17 consecutive years from 1984 through 2000 until Denison broke the Ladies’ string in 2001. Kenyon regained the throne in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Emory enjoyed a 37-point lead over the Ladies going into the final day of this year’s meet. The Eagles’ cushion enabled them to withstand being significantly outscored in the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which Kenyon placed second to Emory’s 12th.

Emory senior Samantha White won the two distance freestyle events to lead the way for the Eagles. Senior Holly Hinz was runner-up in the mile, and freshman Tess Pasternak contributed a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke.

Kenyon did not have an individual champion in the meet for the second straight year, though the Ladies did win two relays. Elizabeth Carlton led off the Ladies’ winning 200-yard freestyle relay and anchored the champion 200-yard medley team. Carlton also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100 free.

Williams, which finished third in the team standings, was led by swimmer-of-the-meet Lindsay Payne, who won three events, swam the second leg of Williams’ winning 400-yard medley relay and anchored the Ephs’ winning 400-yard freestyle relay. She won the 200-yard individual medley in record time, beating previous record-holder Kaitlyn Orstein of Washington and Jefferson.

Payne also set a meet mark in the preliminaries of the 200-yard breaststroke, an event she later won.

Orstein came back to win the 400 IM over Williams’ Amanda Nicholson and Emory’s Hinz.

Other outstanding individual performances were turned in by Calvin’s Becky Weima, who won all three freestyle sprints, and Amherst’s Brittany Sasser, who swept the two backstrokes in record times and participated in a winning relay. Samantha Kephart of Whitworth also was a two-time winner, sweeping the butterfly events and setting a record in the 200.

Kendall Swett of Lake Forest was named diver of the meet after winning the three-meter and placing third in the one-meter (won by Anne Cullen of Concordia-Moorhead).
