Division III notes

Trust — Bridget Belgiovine, director of athletics at Wellesley College and former NCAA director of Division III, put her faith in student-athletes to the test during a recent Women in Athletics Symposium sponsored by the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for student-athletes from league member schools. Her trust proved well-founded — every drop of ice cream ended up in the glass. The exercise was part of a program designed to introduce female student-athletes to opportunities and challenges of careers in intercollegiate atheltics.

Facilities: Calvin College will expand its physical education and athletics facilities in the biggest building project in school history. The project includes a new arena, an indoor track and tennis center, an aquatics center and a student health center, as well as a significant renovation of the current Calvin Fieldhouse creating a new health and recreation center. "The present (physical education and athletics) building was not designed to accommodate the number of students, faculty and athletics programs we currently support," said Glen Van Andel, a Calvin professor and former health, physical education, recreation, dance and sport department chair who co-chaired the committee that planned the $35 million project. "The new and renovated facilities will provide a quality educational environment where students and faculty can develop their knowledge and skills in health education, exercise science, teacher education, sports management and recreation leadership." The new arena is tentatively planned to seat 5,000 fans and will provide a new venue for the school’s men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams. The school wants to break ground for the project in spring 2007 and complete it in time for use in fall 2008.

Milestones: Eileen Blair collected her 100th victory in women’s soccer at Montclair State University September 25 when the Red Hawks defeated Centenary College (New Jersey). Blair is in her ninth season at the school, where she coached her 2004 team to a New Jersey Athletic Conference postseason tournament title and a berth in the Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. She is a three-time NJAC coach of the year ... Scott Leacott earned his 100th win in women’s soccer October 4 as Rowan University remained unbeaten this season with a victory over Salisbury University. Leacott, whose teams have won more than 70 percent of their games through eight seasons, has coached the Profs to seven straight winning seasons, and last year’s team appeared in the Division III championship.

Miscellaneous: Daniel Webster College recently unveiled a new set of "Eagles" logos designed to create a distinctive brand for its athletics programs. "As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the department of athletics here at DWC, we are pleased to offer our student-athletes, alumni, fans and friends of the college a more identifiable athletics brand with these new logos," said Phil Rowe, assistant vice president of student affairs for athletics. "We feel this will allow our athletics program to create a more readily identifiable brand as well as enhance marketing and merchandising opportunities both on and off the campus." The primary logo features an eagle silhouette with the "Eagles" name and school identification, while a second logo identifies the Daniel Webster Eagles without the silhouette and a third logo uses the letters "D" and "W."

Webster University has made its Gorlok symbol "leaner, meaner, faster and more ferocious" in a new logo that was unveiled for use specifically by the school’s athletics program. Student-athletes and athletics department staff members recently received T-shirts bearing the new design during a ceremony at the school. The school created the Gorlok in 1984, taking the name from the intersection of two streets near the Webster Groves, Missouri, campus (Gore and Lockwood avenues). "The Gorlok isn’t going away," said Webster Athletics Director Tom Hart during the ceremony, where he also presented the school with a banner for display in University Center. "The classic Gorlok will remain in place to be used throughout the university. He’s everywhere, and that won’t change. This new logo is specifically for the athletics department." The school’s vice president of students and enrollment management, Deborah Dey, added that development of the new logo recognizes the value of athletics within the university. "When the Gorlok was first created in 1984, Webster was an independent college with only a few sports," she said. "Today, we’re an NCAA Division III school with 13 varsity sports, and the number of student-athletes has risen to about 220."
