Division III Championships previews

Division III Baseball Championship

 

Dates and sites: Three six-team and five seven-team double-elimination regionals are at campus sites May 17-21. The eight winners advance to the finals at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin, May 26-30.

 

Field: Fifty-three teams.

 

Selection date: May 14.

 

2005 champion: Wisconsin-Whitewater.

 

Top contenders: Wooster, The College of New Jersey, Cortland State, Salisbury, St. Scholastica, Chapman, Wheaton (Massachusetts), Carthage.

 

Championship notes: Shaun Swearingen is Wooster’s leading hitter with a .472 batting average ... TCNJ’s Blake Bullis led his team with 11 home runs and 50 runs batted in as of April 24 ... Cortland State was the national runner-up last season ... Salisbury has appeared in the last six NCAA tournament fields ... St. Scholastica’s Mark Moriarty set a program single-game record by recording 16 strikeouts against Northwestern (Minnesota) April 22 ... Chapman’s Buddy Klovstad became the first 10-game winner in Division III on April 19.

 

Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship

 

Dates and sites: First-round competition will be May 10, second-round games May 13, quarterfinals May 17 and semifinals May 21, all at campus sites. The championship game will be May 28 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

 

Field: A field of 20 teams will be placed in two competition brackets of 10 teams each, and geographically paired whenever possible. Geographic pairing will continue through quarterfinal games.

 

Selection date: May 7.

 

2005 champion: Salisbury.

 

Top contenders: Salisbury, Gettysburg, Roanoke, Cortland State and Lynchburg were atop a recent Division III STX Coaches poll.

 

Championship notes: Lynchburg senior midfielder Ryan Quick scored a hat trick at home against Messiah March 18. The Hornets held their opponent scoreless until the fourth quarter ... Cortland State suffered its first regular-season conference loss in 24 years April 26 when the team fell, 9-8, to Geneseo State. The last such loss was also to Geneseo, 12-11, in 1982. Cortland won 75 consecutive regular-season conference games in that span ... Salisbury has won three consecutive NCAA championships, and remained undefeated through late April ... Gettysburg senior Chris Renzi had a career game April 19 against McDaniel, winning 16 face-offs, scooping 15 groundballs and scoring two goals. It was the third consecutive game he recorded double-digit groundballs.
