Consistency, teamwork lead to Nebraska Wesleyan golf win

Rochester’s Stephen Goodridge won the individual title thanks in part to a third-round 68 that helped him recover from a first-round 77. Goodridge won the title by two shots over John Jennison from Rhodes. Trevor Brown Jr./NCAA Photos.

Nobody broke 70, but nobody went above 80, either. That was the key for a consistent Nebraska Wesleyan squad that won its first Division III Men’s Golf Championships team title May 8-11 at the par-71 Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska.

All five Nebraska Wesleyan golfers finished among the top 20 individually. Senior Jon Deines and junior Aaron Stockton tied for fifth at 298, 14 over par, while seniors Travis Davis and Jeff Holm joined sophomore Tyler Lawson in a tie for 16th place at 303.

The Prairie Wolves compiled a field-best 303 in the final round to stretch its victory margin to 10 strokes over Redlands, which finished second for a third straight year. Methodist was 17 back, followed by Oglethorpe and 2005 champion Guilford.

Guilford, which held a two-shot lead after the second round, had won its first team title on the same course in 2002, but Nebraska Wesleyan used the home course to its advantage this year, especially during the final round when the wind-swept course posed problems for competitors.

Nebraska Wesleyan fired the lowest third-round score (292) to take a four-shot lead heading into the final round. All five Prairie Wolves shot between 72 and 75.

The best scoring day for the field came in Round 2, when six schools beat 300. Redlands’ 286 was the best that day.

Rochester’s Stephen Goodridge won the individual title by posting a 5-over-par 289 for four rounds over the 6,770-yard course. Goodridge finished two strokes ahead of John Jennison from Rhodes and three ahead of Redlands’ Nick Obie. Oglethorpe’s Danny Swanick was fourth at plus 12.

Goodridge, who was competing as an individual and not as a member of the Rochester team, fired one of the low rounds of the tournament on Day 3 when he shot a 3-under-par 68 that included six birdies. That came after Rochester coach Rich Johnson challenged his sophomore golfer who opened with a 77-71 start.

“I told him, ‘You’re going to have to be even par to win this,’ ” Johnson said. “He was six over coming into the third round and he made up half of it right away.”

Alex Balog of Huntingdon posted the low round of the tournament with a 66 on Day 2, but that was sandwiched between a first-round 79 and a final-round 85. Other low rounds came from Redlands’ Obie, who shot a 67 on Day 2, and Oglethorpe’s Swanick, who carded a second-round 68.
