It’s typically a relay that decides a close track meet, but the Division II Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships was decided by a fifth-place finish in the pole vault.
Abilene Christian grabbed its fifth straight team title at the May 25-27 championships at Emporia State when senior Cory Aguilar matched two other vaulters at 4.95 meters (16 feet, 2 3/4 inches) but was awarded the best placement on the basis of fewer attempts.
His four points in the event gave the Wildcats a 2 1/2-point edge over Saint Augustine’s, which earlier had briefly taken the lead with its win by one-tenth of a second over Abilene Christian in the 1,600-meter relay.
The Wildcats also benefited from a surprise victory by freshman Jordan Johnson in the 400-meter dash as they scored all but three of their 80 points on the final day of competition.
As usual, however, Nicodemus Naimadu was Abilene Christian’s biggest weapon, claiming individual titles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run. The latter victory was somewhat tough, however, as Naimadu sprinted from behind down the final straightaway to collect his eighth individual title, counting indoor and outdoor track and cross country competition.
Naimadu’s win also made Abilene Christian only the second school in any division to collect 100 individual championships in outdoor track and field championships competition — along with
Coach Don D. Hood said the Wildcats, who also won the 400-meter relay, performed according to plan.
“We did exactly what was predicted,” he said. “That was pure purple heart. Everybody did exactly what was expected of them.”
Saint Augustine’s, which beat the Wildcats in March at the indoor championships, claimed individual titles in three events — adding wins in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles to the relay victory — but couldn’t quite find the right combination to snap Abilene Christian’s outdoor streak. The two schools share the consecutive-victories mark.
The meet’s only other individual double titlist, Wilbert Walker of Lincoln (
The other record came in the high jump from Keith Moffatt of Morehouse, a two-time indoor champion in the event who eased past a nine-year-old mark by a quarter-inch to claim his first victory in the event outdoors.
