Conferences: More than 30 Lone Star Conference student-athletes and athletics administrators recently conducted the league’s first Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Summer Retreat. The two-day event, conducted at Texas Woman’s University, provided an opportunity for student representatives from LSC member institutions to discuss key issues facing the conference. The topics included sportsmanship initiatives; community-service project ideas; conference championship enhancements; and the need for guidelines regarding online accounts, such as those found on Facebook.com or MySpace.com. "This was a positive experience for all involved," said LSC Assistant Commissioner Jay Poerner. "Any time you can get the student-athletes to come together and offer their insight about how to improve the collegiate experience, it’s a win-win situation for everybody." Koby Styles of East Central University, the LSC’s representative on the Division II national SAAC, chaired the meeting ... The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference will establish sportsmanship awards this year to promote good will throughout the conference. Two awards will be presented at the end of each sports season. The first will be the Team Award, which will be presented to the team (including coaches, participating student-athletes and student-athletes on the bench) that displays the best sportsmanship throughout its season. That recognition will be based on evaluations that game officials fill out after each contest. The second award, called the Institution Award, will be based on the behavior of the fans, as exhibited by their enthusiasm, spirit, innovation and overall sportsmanship. RMAC coaches will vote to de- termine the winner of the Institution Award. At the end of the year, a Sportsmanship Cup will be awarded to the institution with the highest combined total from the Team and Institution Awards. "Sportsmanship has always been a priority in the RMAC," said Jenn Fraser, assistant athletics director for compliance at Metropolitan State College of Denver and chair of the RMAC Sportsmanship Committee. "We feel that it is important to recognize our student-athletes, coaches and institutions that make sportsmanship a priority in their actions during competition" ... The Northeast-10 Conference has created a "football media center" on its Northeast10.org Web site to provide individual team information, contact information, outlooks and more. "The football media center was created with the goal of keeping accurate and up-to-date pertinent information about all 10 football-playing schools on our Web site," said Commissioner Dave Brunk. "The center not only makes it easy to find everything that the media and our fans need, but it is an excellent remedy to the ever-so-rapid environment and information age that we embrace in college athletics." The center provides easily accessible information about statistics, players to watch, team outlooks, past results and the 2006 schedules on each of the institution-specific pages. "One of the most significant benefits to housing the center on our site is the ability to make any changes or to post additions throughout the season — an option that clearly was not available when the guide was printed before the start of the season."
