Make a Wish

Feb 23, 2006 10:25:40 AM

It was an emotional scene at the Duke Wells Center recently as student-athletes from Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University teamed to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to benefit 4-year-old Tay Henry of Arkadelphia. The two institutions, separated by Highway 7, met on the basketball court for part two of the “Battle of the Ravine.” Although the Lady Reddies and Reddies won the games, it was Tay who was the real winner. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children with a life-threatening illness or disease. Tay has a rare form of cancer, but it was evident during the festivities that his illness wasn’t slowing him down. The Student Athlete Advisory Committees from both schools embraced the project and collected donations throughout the night. Tay’s wish is to go to Disney World, and the event raised more than $1,000 toward helping make his wish come true. Between games, Tay was introduced to the crowd and was presented autographed basketballs from all the teams. He also received a Henderson State basketball jersey autographed by the Reddies, and four tickets to Magic Springs. “We wanted to focus on helping children in the Clark County area and this is just one way that we as a community can come together and make a difference in someone’s life,” said Henderson State Sports Information Director Troy Mitchell. The SAAC and the Henderson State athletics department plan on making this an annual event.
