The matchup was the same in this year’s Division II Women’s Tennis Championship but the result was different as Brigham Young-Hawaii turned the tables on Armstrong Atlantic State.

The Seasiders won their fourth title in five years with a 5-3 victory over the Pirates in the championship match played May 13 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Last season, the second-ranked Pirates knocked off the top-ranked and defending champion Seasiders, but this year’s rankings and outcome were reversed. The result also mirrored the 2002 final, also in Kansas City.

Both programs entered the final match with perfect seasons intact, but Brigham Young-Hawaii snapped Armstrong Atlantic State’s 60-match win streak and completed a 27-0 campaign.

The Pirates netted an early 1-0 lead when the No. 1 doubles team of Louisa Cowper and Iuliia Stupak beat Jing Jing Liu and Ramona Husaru, 8-4. The Seasiders’ Julia Ustyuzhanina and Tetyana Bula evened the score in their No. 2 doubles contest. Brigham Young-Hawaii pulled ahead after the No. 3 doubles team of Petra Teller and Gurianna Korinihona collected an 8-5 victory.

In singles competition, Armstrong Atlantic State took the first two matches to establish a 3-2 lead before Brigham Young-Hawaii answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. The Seasiders moved ahead of the Pirates for good when Bula finished off a second-set tiebreaker to earn a victory at the No. 4 position. Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Husaru stormed back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to clinch the title with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.

The Seasiders had to overcome a few off-court tribulations to claim their sixth overall title. Bula underwent surgery for an impacted wisdom tooth the day before the tournament began and competed in spite of swelling. In addition to also suffering from tooth problems, Ustyuzhanina was hospitalized for six hours after her semifinal contest for treatment of an adverse reaction to a bee sting.

The two programs continued their dominance in the sport. Head coach Dave Porter has led Brigham Young-Hawaii to six titles and two runner-up finishes in eight years, and Armstrong Atlantic State has won three crowns and has finished second five other times since 1995.
