Division II Baseball Championship

 

Dates and sites: The eight six-team, double-elimination regionals are May 18-21 at campus sites. The eight winners advance to the finals at Patterson Field/Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, May 27-June 3.

 

Field: Forty-eight teams.

 

Selection date: May 14.

 

2005 champion: Florida Southern.

 

Top contenders: Georgia College & State, Tampa, West Virginia State, Abilene Christian, Catawba, Francis Marion, Grand Valley State and Central Missouri State were the top-ranked teams in an April 24 Collegiate Baseball poll.

 

Championship notes: Senior shortstop Mike Deveaux had a team-leading 60 runs batted in for Georgia College & State as of April 24 ... Tampa’s Lee Cruz has been named Sunshine State Conference player of the week four times this season ... West Virginia State has averaged more than 30 wins a season since 1990 ... On April 21, Joel Wells, a senior designated hitter, set Abilene Christian’s single-season record by hitting his 16th home run ... Catawba has already set a program record for wins in a season with 44 ... Francis Marion reached No. 6 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, best in program history.

 

Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship

 

Dates and sites: Semifinal games will be played May 20 or 21 on campus sites. The championship will be May 28 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia

 

Field: Four teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament. One team each from the North, Central and South regions receive automatic bids, and one at-large team from any region also will be selected to participate.

 

Selection date: May 7.

 

2005 champion: New York Institute of Technology.

 

Top contenders: In the most recent STX Coaches poll, LeMoyne, Dowling, Mercyhurst, C.W. Post and Adelphi occupied the top spots.

 

Championship notes: Mercyhurst, C.W. Post, Dowling and Adelphi all play in Division II’s Central region ... C.W. Post coach Tom Postel will retire at the end of the 2006 season. Postel is in his 21st season at his alma mater and has a 137-119 record heading into final play. As a player, Postel was a two-time all-American and played for the U.S. national team ... LeMoyne is undefeated and has 70 consecutive regular-season conference victories ... Dowling senior Chris DuPignac leads the team in goals scored this season with 33 through April 19, including five in the season-opener against St. Andrews Presbyterian.

 

Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championship

 

Dates and sites: The 2006 semifinals and championship game will be May 13 and 14 at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

 

Field: The tournament is a four-team, single-elimination tournament.

 

Selection date: May 7.

 

2005 champion: Stonehill.

 

Top contenders: A recent Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll ranked C.W. Post, Adelphi, Stonehill, Lock Haven and Limestone in the top five.

 

Championship notes:  Five different C.W. Post players scored second-half goals in an April 21 game at Bentley. Junior Shannon Fabian scored three goals in the first 7:09 of play in the same game ... Adelphi coach Jill Lessne-Solomon was the subject of an April article in Lacrosse magazine detailing her life as a fourth-grade teacher, lacrosse coach and student studying for her second master’s degree. Lessne-Solomon is also due to have a baby this summer ... Stonehill goalie Lauren Stone actually began her lacrosse career playing attack. Stone is now one of the best goalies nationally, posting two career shutouts and once being named Division II goalie of the year ... Limestone seniors Kristen Black and Brooke Nowell were both named preseason all-Americans by Inside Lacrosse magazine.
