Stanford completes unbeaten campaign with win at home

Stanford’s dominance on the tennis courts continued as the Cardinal women captured their 15th NCAA team championship May 23 with a 4-1 victory over Miami (Florida).

Playing on its home court, the Cardinal ran its season record to a perfect 30-0 and extended its winning streak to 86 dating back to the start of the 2004 season. The victory also marked the 107th consecutive win at home for Stanford, a streak that stretches back to 1999.

Stanford collected the doubles point with wins by the teams of Celia Durkin and Amber Liu and Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey. Miami picked up a point at the No. 1 singles position when Audra Cohen defeated Liu, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Senior Player of the Year, 6-3, 6-3, but the Cardinal secured the championship with wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 positions.

“We were twitching a little bit in the beginning of the match today, but we got ourselves righted and we had a good performance at No. 2 doubles,” said Stanford head coach Lele Forood. “We went out and started to play our game a little bit more in the singles and we certainly broke out to some nice leads, at five and six, especially, and Theresa (Logar) went out very quickly.”

Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews complimented the Cardinal on the match and said she was pleased with the way her team played.

“I was very happy with the way our girls came out today and fought. Stanford played a great match. In doubles we had our chance, but maybe the moment got to us a bit,” said Yaroshuk-Tews.

The Hurricanes reached the final round for the first time since 1985 and just the second time in program history. Miami finished the season with a record of 24-7.

In the individual portion of the tournament, Suzi Babos became the first California women’s tennis player to capture the NCAA Division I women’s tennis singles title when she defeated Lindsey Nelson of Pacific-10 Conference rival Southern California.

Babos upset defending champion Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor in the round of 16 to ultimately advance to the national title match.

After winning the first set, 6-4, Babos pressed her advantage by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Nelson, the 18th-ranked player in the nation, won the next game, but Babos went on to claim the next two games and a 6-1 victory to clinch the championship.

“Last year I went to Georgia and said, ‘I have shot. I can win this tournament.’ This year, I wasn’t expecting anything. I just wanted to enjoy it and take it match by match,” said Babos, who returned to the court in January after tearing two ligaments in her right ankle in October. “I was really struggling until March. My confidence was really low. I didn’t believe I could come back and play at the level I wanted to play ever again. I just had to work extremely hard.”

Nelson upended the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Miami’s Audra Cohen, in the round of 16 to earn an appearance in the final. She is the first Trojan to reach the championship match since 1983 and the second overall.

In doubles, Northwestern all-Americans Cristelle Grier and Alexis Prousis downed Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter of Fresno State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to become the second Northwestern team to win the doubles titles and the first since 1987.

The unseeded Wildcats broke Fresno State to earn the first game of both sets. With the score 2-1 in the second, Northwestern netted the next four games to capture the title.

Grier and Prousis defeated multiple nationally ranked teams to reach the championship match including No. 16 Arizona State, No. 8 California, No. 10 Georgia Tech and the No. 1 team of Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey from Stanford.

“After the first match we got better and better. I didn’t think about ranking at all, not one bit. We didn’t even care. We were just so excited,” said Prousis.
