Duke was tired of playing second fiddle in this year’s Division I Women’s Golf Championships and used a dominant third day to claim the team title May 24-27 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

The crown was Duke’s second straight and fourth overall, more than any other team at the school, including men’s basketball, which has won three national championships. The four women’s golf titles also is second only to Arizona State’s six. The Blue Devils also became the first team since Arizona State in 1997 and 1998 to win back-to-back titles.

Duke started the third round three strokes behind leader Arizona State but then turned it on with a 1-under-par 287, the low aggregate for the tournament. Amanda Blumenherst led the way with a 2-under 70 that helped the Blue Devils establish a 13-stroke lead heading into the final day.

The lead held up as Duke posted a fourth-round 291 to win by 10 shots over second-place Southern California. Pepperdine finished third, followed by Arizona State and California.

Freshman Jennie Lee birdied four of her final 11 holes to lead the Blue Devils individually, posting a 71 in the last round and finishing at even par for the championship, good for second in the individual standings.

Dewi-Claire Schreefel of Southern California was the medalist, overcoming a three-shot deficit in the final round. Her fourth-round 69 helped her become Southern California’s third medalist. Jennifer Rosales (1998) and Mikaela Parmlid (2003) are the others.

Schreefel birdied three of the last five holes to clinch the win. Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine was the leader at 2-under after 54 holes and was the only player under par for the tournament, but her final-round 77 put her in a tie for fourth with Florida’s Sandra Gal at 3-over. Da Sol Chung of UNLV was a stroke ahead of both of them in third place.

“I’m not really sure how to respond to this,” Schreefel said after the win. “I’m still shocked from everything. Last spring, when I finished my first season, I was surprised with how well that had gone. Then I had an OK summer and I was not happy with my fall and spring, so I went home and talked to a few coaches. I really started to feel things come together at the regionals and I’m happy to have kept it going.”

Duke’s Blumenherst, another freshman on the Blue Devils roster, ended up tying for ninth, while senior Elizabeth Janangelo tied for 12th. Junior Ann Grzebien, last year’s medalist, tied for 21st.

“This is a great team with great chemistry,” Blumenherst said. “We all get along with each other and we have so much fun. It has just been a blast. We have also been disciplined enough to figure out courses and help each other out every round.”

Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis fired a final-round 66 in the morning wave to set a renovated Scarlet Course record. She started the day tied for 50th in the individual standings and finished tied for ninth overall. The Razorbacks’ sophomore made five consecutive birdies on holes 12 through 16. She had posted 76s in her three previous rounds.
