Division I Women’s Golf Championships
Dates and sites: Wake Forest, Texas A&M and Washington host regionals May 11-13. The finals are May 23-26 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.
Field: Eight teams and two individuals advance from each of the three regionals for a total of 24 teams and six individuals (126 golfers) at the finals.
Selection date: May 1.
2005 team champion: Duke.
Top team contenders: Duke, UCLA, Arizona State, Auburn and Georgia were the top five teams in the most recent Golf Channel poll.
Championships notes: The Southeastern Conference tournament wasn’t decided until Auburn’s Maria Martinez and Margaret Shirley sank birdie putts on the 18th hole to propel the Tigers to a one-stroke victory over Tennessee. Georgia placed third. Martinez medaled for Auburn, followed by Tennessee’s Marci Turner. Taylor Leon was Georgia’s top finisher, tying for fifth ... Duke won its 11th straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship and 14th overall with a 19-stroke win over Virginia. Blue Devils coach Dan Brooks may have been understated when he said afterward, “We have a lot of talent on this team.” That talent is manifested in a lineup featuring freshman Amanda Blumenherst, who won the ACC individual title. Elizabeth Janangelo and Jennifer Pandolfi also finished in the top 10. Add to that defending NCAA champion Anna Grzebien and it’s easy to see why the Blue Devils will be favored to win their fourth Division I crown.
