Colorado outpaced top-ranked and defending champion Wisconsin to claim its second Division I Men’s Cross Country Championships team title in three years at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Buffaloes placed five runners among the top 35 scorers November 20 to cruise past the Badgers by 48 points and claim their third men’s championship overall since 2001.

Junior Brent Vaughn was Colorado’s top scorer, finishing eighth among scoring runners and 12th overall. But it may have been junior Stephen Pifer’s surge during the second half of the 10-kilometer race that boosted the Buffaloes to victory.

"I knew in the second half I had to come back and catch a lot of guys," he said. And that’s just what he did. Pifer trailed 52 runners at the halfway point but rallied past 32 opponents to finish 10th among scorers and 20th overall. Senior Erik Heinonen capped his career by placing 15th among scorers and 28th overall.

The temperature neared 50 degrees at race time — the warmest start in the past three years at Terre Haute — but contestants still dealt with muddy conditions after nearly 5 inches of rain during the week before the event.

"We did well here a couple of years ago, too, and everyone was telling me that the mud was perfect for us," said Colorado coach Mark Wetmore, who now has collected a total of four national titles as a coach, including a dual men’s and women’s victory in 2004 in Terre Haute. "But Boulder is like a desert and isn’t very muddy."

In individual competition, Brigham Young senior Josh Rohatinsky pulled away from Stanford’s Neftalem Araia and Southern Utah’s Jess Baumgartner to win the race with a time of 30 minutes, 44.9 seconds.

The first half of the race was crowded at the front, with eight runners passing the halfway point tied for first. But Rohatinsky and Araia were able to break away, followed closely by Baumgartner, who stayed close until the last 500 yards. Then, Rohatinsky slipped away to finish eight seconds ahead of Araia.

"I looked back about halfway down the stretch and noticed that no one was behind me," Rohatinsky said. "It was at that point when I realized that no one was going to catch me."

"Josh had a phenomenal performance," said Brigham Young coach Ed Eyestone. "He was patient and spotted well. We’ve known all year long that he’s an amazing athlete, so it’s nice to see it materialize here."
