Arkansas ‘jigsaw’ fits as Razorbacks claim 19th track crown

LSU’s Reginald Dardar handled the second leg of the 1,600-meter relay, which the Tigers won with a 3:04.01 time to clinch second place at the championships. Another member of the relay, anchor Xavier Carter, won the 400-meter dash for LSU, but the two event wins weren’t enough to overcome Arkansas in team scoring.

Host Arkansas responded to a capacity crowd at its Randal Tyson Center and a stiff challenge from contenders to successfully defend its team title at the Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Razorbacks, who hosted the meet for the seventh straight year, claimed their second straight team title and third crown in four years, boosted by event victories by Josphat Boit in the 5,000-meter run and Jaanus Uudmae in the triple jump.

Arkansas, which now has won 19 indoor crowns overall, also captured the distance medley relay title to outpoint runner-up LSU, 53-45.

The Razorbacks capitalized on miscues and misfortunes of their top competitors.

LSU claimed two event titles at the championships — Xavier Carter won the 400-meter dash and anchored the Tigers’ winning 1,600-meter relay — but lost key points in the 60-meter dash when Kelly Willie (who later also ran on the winning relay) was disqualified for a false start.

Another contender, Texas, was on the way to winning the top two spots in the heptathlon when leader Trey Hardee was forced to withdraw with an injury.

“I knew this would be a really tough meet,” said Arkansas Coach John McDonnell, whose teams have won all but four of the last 23 Division I men’s indoor championships. “There were four teams that could score from 45 to 50 points. It was sort of like a jigsaw today. We held our ground and didn’t make any mistakes.”

McDonnell also credited a noisy partisan crowd of more than 5,500 fans for Arkansas’s success.

“I’ll tell you one thing, I think this was the best NCAA meet as far as the crowd goes,” he said. “It was packed. I don’t think we could get another body in here.... If you can’t get excited about running in this kind of atmosphere, then you are in trouble.”

Still, Arkansas ultimately had to outperform one of the more evenly matched fields in recent memory.

Florida State made its biggest splash yet at the meet, finishing third on the strength of sophomore Walter Dix’s victory over LSU’s Carter in the 200-meter dash and Garrett Johnson’s win in the shot put.

Texas finished fourth as Donovan Kilmartin — stepping forward after Hardee’s withdrawal — reclaimed the heptathlon title he won in 2004. Tennessee, whose Aries Merritt won the 60-meter hurdles, finished fifth.

Four men successfully defended individual crowns: Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin in the 3,000-meter run; Jesse Williams of Southern California in the high jump; Thomas Skipper of Oregon in the pole vault; and Spyridon Jullien of Virginia Tech in the 35-pound weight throw.
