Centennial moments, 1950-55

 

The following events helped shape the NCAA from 1950 through 1955.

 

  • 1951 (January 12) — The “Sanity Code” is revised (financial aid and enforcement provisions).
  • 1951 (October 1) — Walter Byers becomes the first full-time executive director of the NCAA after serving since 1947 as part-time executive assistant.
  • 1952 (January 11) — A limited television plan is adopted.
  • 1952 (July 28) — The NCAA national office moves from Chicago to Kansas City, Missouri.
  • 1953 (August 12) — The Basketball Championship is expanded to 24 teams (15 automatic qualifiers) effective in 1954.
  • 1954 (January 4) — The Baseball Championship is reorganized (32-team field, eight-team double-elimination final).
  • 1954 (February 13) — Furman University’s Frank Selvy establishes a single-game collegiate basketball scoring record with 100 points against Newberry College.
  • 1954 (February 15) — The first National Collegiate Championships Records Book is published.
  • 1954 (March 4-7) — The first National Collegiate Skiing Championships are conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno.
