FACULTY REPRESENTATIVES

FAR Issues Institute invites nominees from Division II

Nominations are being solicited from each Division II conference office -- in consultation with conference faculty athletics representatives and chief executive officers -- for the inaugural FAR Fellows Institute October 7-9 in Indianapolis.

Each conference is being asked to identify two candidates for the institute, which seeks to help FARs clarify their roles and critical functions at the campus and conference levels, develop leadership skills, establish a network with other Division II FARs and develop an action plan for implementation on campus or in the conference.

At least one FAR will be selected from each conference to participate.

The call for nominations, including nomination forms and criteria for selection, was mailed April 18 to conference commissioners, who are asked to respond by May 13. Further information is available from Diane Husic, a developer of the institute, at 610/625-7918 or via email at dhusic@moravian.edu.

ICE HOCKEY

Men's Frozen Four finalists announced by committee

The Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee announced finalists April 14 to host the Men's Frozen Four from 2009 to 2011.

The finalists are Boston; Detroit; Philadelphia; Tampa; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Washington, D.C.

"Each year the selection process gets more and more competitive due to the popularity of the Frozen Four, and this year was certainly no exception," said Wayne Dean, committee chair.

Representatives of prospective host institutions and the finalist cities will make presentations to the committee in June.

DRUG TESTING

Judge permits ephedra sales; NCAA ban remains in place

A federal judge in Utah ended the year-long Food and Drug Administration ban on ephedra in an April 14 ruling, forcing the FDA to allow sales of products containing the stimulant.

In her ruling, Judge Tena Campbell said that to institute a ban, the FDA had to prove that even small doses of ephedra could be dangerous to those who ingest it.

Frank Uryasz, president of the National Center for Drug Free Sport, Inc., which administers NCAA drug testing, said the Association's ban on ephedra products remains in place. The NCAA banned ephedra in 1997.
