Commission members say academic reform 'on course'

Nov 21, 2005 4:48:19 PM

Members of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics see NCAA Division I academic-reform efforts as generally being "on course" after hearing reports from Association representatives during its recent meeting in Washington, D.C.

Commission members reacted positively to a report from Walter Harrison, chair of the Division I Committee on Academic Performance, about Academic Progress Rate data. However, commissioners expres-sed some concern about adjustments in the APR to provide relief in cases of student-athletes who leave an institution in good academic standing for a career in professional sports, and urged the committee to resist attempts to dilute the program through appeals.

The Knight Commission also announced it will host a summit on "the collegiate athletics experience" in January, focusing on issues students face when they become athletes or as they are planning to be athletes.
