Snyder retires as K-State football coach

Dec 5, 2005 12:08:33 PM

Bill Snyder announced his retirement as head football coach at Kansas State, effective at the end of the 2005 season.

Snyder took over the Wildcats program in 1989. In the first year, Kansas State registered just one win, but the victory snapped a 16-game losing streak. Snyder has since gone on to lead the Wildcats to a school-record 135 victories, which eclipsed the 131 wins the team compiled between 1937 and 1988, and 11 bowl appearances. The three-time Big Eight Conference and two-time Big 12 Conference coach of the year also has been honored as national coach of the year by the Associated Press, CNN and ESPN.

Snyder came to Kansas State from Iowa, where he served as offensive coordinator from 1979 to 1988. He also completed assistant and assistant coaching stints at North Texas, Austin College, Southern California, and at the high school level.

A three-time letter-winner at defensive back at William Jewell College, Snyder graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1963. He earned a master's degree at Eastern New Mexico in 1965.
