Wiederrecht named as head track coach

 Wiederrecht as head women's track and field coach to succeed Darren Schneider, who will continue to serve as head men's track and field coach.

Since 2000, Wiederrecht has served as an associate professor of health and physical education at Cecil (Maryland) Community College. He also has worked as a volunteer assistant coach at Messiah during the 2005 season, where he formerly was an assistant men's and women's coach at the school from 2001 to 2003. He spent the 2004 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Delaware. Wiederrecht also has completed coaching stints at the junior-high and high-school levels.

A 1991 graduate of Messiah with a degree in health and physical education, Wiederrecht was captain of the men's track and field team and earned all-America honors. He also earned a master of science in exercise science and physical education at Western Maryland in 2000.

Lowry has been a professor of law and director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine ... Robert M. McChesney announced plans to retire as president at Montevallo ... Salem President Julianne Still Thrift announced plans to retire ... John F. Van Domelen retired as president at Wentworth Institute ... John F. Hayward was named as president at Mercy ... Gallaudet President I. King Jordan announced plans to resign, effective December 31, 2006.

Directors of athletics

Susan Bassett, director of athletics at William Smith, accepted the same position at Carnegie Mellon. Deb Steward, an assistant athletics director at Ithaca, was announced as Bassett's successor ... Towson's Wayne Edwards announced plans to retire as athletics director ... Judy MacLeod resigned as director of athletics at Tulsa ... Tom Tallman was appointed as director of athletics at Kentucky Wesleyan. Tallman most recently has served as interim athletics director ... Hawaii Pacific selected Jill Ward as director of athletics to replace J.D. Barnett, who resigned. Ward, who has been interim athletics director since May, was associate athletics director for compliance and business administration at the school and formerly was an assistant and associate director of membership services at the NCAA national office.

Associate directors of athletics

UC Irvine announced Phil Wang as associate athletics director for business and finance. Since 1996, Wang has worked as director of finance in the athletics department at UCLA ... Nick Williams< elevated to associate athletics director for external operations at Central Michigan. Williams has been assistant athletics director for marketing at the school since March 2002 ... Pittsburgh promoted Donna Sanft to senior associate athletics director for administration, student life and compliance. Sanft, chair of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee, formerly spent 12 years as head gymnastics coach at the school ... Kim King was elevated to associate athletics director for student services and senior woman administrator at Binghamton. King has been with the school for 11 years and most recently has been assistant athletics director for student services ... TCU selected Scott Kull as associate director of athletics for external operations. Kull has been at Florida State for the past seven years, most recently working as assistant athletics director for marketing and general manager of athletics marketing.

Assistant director of athletics

Cortland State tabbed Tara Derbick as assistant athletics director for marketing, promotions and event management. Derbick formerly was athletics ticket manager at Minnesota Mankato and has most recently served as regional sales manager for Octane Fitness in Minnesota.

Faculty athletics representatives

Notre Dame (Maryland) chose Peter Hoffman as faculty athletics representative to succeed the late Stephen F. Beckenholdt. Hoffman, an associate professor of biology, has been with the school since 1995 ... Jon B. Kaplan was announced as faculty athletics representative at Chapman. Kaplan, who succeeds Harry Hamilton, is an assistant dean in the school of business.

Coaches

Baseball ­ George Reidy was hired as head coach at Assumption. Reidy, who replaces Jamie Pinzino, has been head coach at St. John's (Massachusetts) High School for two years and formerly was an assistant at Brandeis from 2000 to 2003 ... Dallas appointed Chris Strockbine as head coach ... Don Maines was hired as head coach at Long Island to succeed the retired Frank Giannone. Maines formerly spent 14 seasons as head coach at Drexel.

Baseball assistants ­ Southern New Hampshire appointed B.J. Gagnon as an assistant coach. Gagnon replaces Scott Durand ... Lake Erie tabbed Scott Fremont as assistant baseball coach and sports marketing director ... Bobby "B.J." Griffith was added as an assistant coach at North Dakota State. For the past three seasons, Griffith has been an assistant at Texas A&M-Kingsville ... Wingate chose Jeff Gregory and Mike Ranson as assistant coaches. Gregory has been a graduate assistant and head junior varsity coach at the school for the past four seasons. Ranson has been an assistant coach at Lynchburg.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Damian Pitts assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Millersville. Pitts was an interim assistant coach with the program last season ... Kentucky Wesleyan tabbed Joshua Prock as top assistant coach and tabbed Korey White as second assistant coach. Prock has been director of basketball operations at Oklahoma and White was an assistant coach at Northern Arizona ... Matt Kingsley was selected as a volunteer assistant at Yale. Kingsley formerly was an assistant at Clarkson and associate head coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Texas-San Antonio hired Beau Archibald and Lance Madison as assistant coaches to replace Lloyd Williams and Michael Schwartz. The school also appointed Kyle Kotrla as administrative assistant/video coordinator. Archibald has been an assistant at Jacksonville for the past two seasons and Madison has been associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Redlands (Oklahoma) Community College since 2002. Kotrla, a 2005 graduate of Texas A&M, was an intern at Texas-San Antonio last season ... Todd Stephens was added as top assistant at Frostburg State. Stephens was an assistant at Susquehanna last season and formerly spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Frostburg State ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg announced Nolan Larry as an assistant coach. During the 2003-04 season, Larry was an assistant women's basketball coach at Washington and Jefferson ... Sean Tyson accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Mercyhurst.

Women's basketball ­ Wilkes named Rachel Hartung as head coach. For the past two seasons, Hartung has been head coach at Centenary (New Jersey) ... Robert Booher was selected as head coach at Lake Erie. Booher has been head coach at Lakeland (Ohio) Community College for six seasons ... Gen Schmitt was tabbed as head coach at Dallas ... Mark Katarski was hired as head women's basketball coach at Chatham. Katarski most recently has been assistant women's basketball coach, assistant softball coach and sports information director at Pittsburgh-Greensburg.

Women's basketball assistants ­ Kentucky Wesleyan added Katie Vieth as top assistant coach ... Amanda Went was promoted to second assistant at Stephen F. Austin ... Frostburg State chose Zack Vogelsberg as first assistant coach. Vogelsberg has been an assistant coach at Bethel (Minnesota) for the past three seasons ... Lake Erie announced Alyssa Richert as an assistant women's basketball coach and game-day operations director ... Oregon State added Krista Reinking as an assistant coach, Erin Entwistle as director of basketball operations and Joan Wonsley as administrative assistant. Reinking was administrative associate for women's basketball at Texas and Entwistle has been a marketing intern at Oklahoma State for the past year. For the past six years, Wonsley has been office manager and administrative assistant to the athletics director at Country Christian School and Country Church in Oregon ... Lorraine Morrissey was named as an assistant coach at Siena. Morrissey has worked as an assistant at Army since 2003.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Ed O'Gorman was selected as interim head coach at Millersville. O'Gorman has been assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at the school for the past two years ... Lake Erie named Brian Harmon as interim head coach ... Ryan Frey was hired as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach and director of sports information at Dallas.

Men's and women's cross country assistants ­ Angelica Iannone was appointed as an assistant men's and women's coach at Millersville. For the past two years, Iannone has been an assistant track and field coach at Wagner ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg awarded Kathy Murray additional duties as an assistant men's and women's cross country coach. Murray will continue to serve as an academic advisor and coordinator of international studies at the school.

Equestrian ­ Sarah Staveley-O'Carroll accepted responsibilities as head coach at Roger Williams.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Jen Kroleski was chosen as interim head women's coach at Cortland State. Kroleski, who has been an assistant with the program, replaces Kim Hokanson.

Men's ice hockey assistant ­ Wentworth Institute hired R.J. Tolan as men's associate head coach. Tolan has been an assistant men's coach at Northeastern for one season.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Pacific (Oregon) named Wynne Lobel as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in the spring of 2007. Lobel formerly was head coach at Plymouth State for four seasons ... Mount St. Mary's announced Denise Wescott as head women's coach to succeed Courtney Martinez Connor. Wescott was head coach at Delaware from 1993 to 2004 and was head coach of the German National Team from 1994 to 2005.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants ­ Erin LaMotte was hired as an assistant women's coach at Mount St. Mary's, to replace Nicol Parcelluzzi, who became head women's lacrosse coach at Montclair State. LaMotte was a four-year letter-winner on the women's lacrosse team at Mount St. Mary's and helped guide the Mountaineers to Northeast Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2004 and 2005 ... Trinity (Connecticut) announced Joseph Mendonca as a graduate assistant coach for men's lacrosse and men's soccer. Mendonca has been an assistant women's soccer coach at Sacred Heart and Bridgeport over the past two years.

Rowing assistant ­ Jessica Clark was tabbed as an assistant coach at Stetson.

Men's soccer ­ Bryan Bugarin assumed responsibilities as head men's soccer coach and game-day manager at Villa Julie. Bugarin, who succeeds Ricky Sanchez, was an assistant with the program last season.

Men's soccer assistant ­ Micky McManus was chosen as an assistant men's soccer coach and intramurals director at Lake Erie.

Women's soccer ­ Dallas selected Andrea Duffy as head women's soccer coach and head women's lacrosse coach.

Women's soccer assistants ­ Cincinnati added Becki Poeppelmeier and Stefani Workman as assistant coaches. Poeppelmeier formerly was an assistant at Wooster and has been girls' director of coaching for the St. Louis Stars Soccer Club for the past year. Workman was a 2005 graduate of Morehead State, where she was a four-year starter in goal for the women's soccer team ... Leslie Hrubes resigned as assistant women's soccer coach and assistant softball coach at Pittsburgh-Greensburg ... Robert Bielan was named as an assistant coach at Wingate. Most recently, Bielan has been head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Holy Family Academy.

Softball ­ Kentucky Wesleyan announced Jack Robinson as head coach ... Ellie Hanover was named as head coach at Florida Tech to succeed the late Nancy Bottge. As head coach at D'Youville since 2000, Hanover has led the school to the 2005 North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament title and 2004 regular season league championship.

Softball assistant ­ Del Youngblood was added as an assistant coach at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Cornell College chose Tim Preston as head men's coach to replace Rusty Graff, who resigned. Most recently, Preston has been a tennis pro at Westfield Tennis Club in Iowa ... Mihaela Stefan was hired as head women's coach at Fordham. Stefan has been an intern with Major League Lacrosse's Long Island Lizards and also served as a graduate assistant in the office of student activities and student support at Hofstra.

Men's and women's tennis assistant ­ Roger Williams selected Paula Portalatin as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Bethany Brewster was awarded additional responsibilities as head men's and women's track and field coach at Edgewood. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2006. Brewster will continue to serve as head men's and women's cross country coach.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Dale White was hired as head women's coach at Kentucky Wesleyan. White has been head coach at South Spencer (Indiana) High School for two seasons ... Roger Williams named Bret Stothart as head women's volleyball coach and coordinator of intramurals and recreation. Stothart has been media relations graduate assistant at Niagara for the past two years and formerly was director of communications and media services for the American Hockey League.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant ­ New Jersey City hired Jacqueline Monroy as an assistant women's coach.

Wrestling ­ Neil Barnes was elevated to head coach at Millersville. Barnes has been an assistant with the program since 2003 and spent last season as interim head coach ... Cornell College's Drew Pariano resigned as head coach to become an assistant at Northwestern.

Staff

Athletic trainers ­ New Jersey City elevated Jessica Springstead to head athletic trainer. Springstead, who succeeds Karin Damon, has been filling the post on an interim basis since October of last year ... Dallas chose Meaghan Murphy as head athletic trainer.

Intramurals ­ Joe Hill accepted additional responsibilities as coordinator of intramurals at Pittsburgh-Greensburg. Hill has been in charge of the baseball program at the school for three seasons and will retain head coaching duties.

Marketing and promotions ­ Belmont tabbed Bari Watson as director of marketing. For the past three years, Watson has worked as director of development and marketing at West Alabama.

Marketing and promotions assistant ­ Jimmy Smith was appointed as assistant director of marketing at Central Michigan. Smith has been a marketing and promotions assistant at the school since May 2003.

Sports information ­ Massachusetts-Dartmouth announced Dave Geringer as sports information director to succeed the late Bill Gathright. Geringer has spent the past year serving in a similar capacity at Alaska Fairbanks ... Brittney Murphy was hired as sports information director at Lake Erie ... Mark Cohen was hired as director of athletics media relations at TCU. Cohen has been at Wofford for the past 16 years, most recently serving as associate athletics director ... Roger McAfee was named as athletics communications director at Coppin State. McAfee has been assistant director of media relations at the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation.

Sports information assistants ­ Central Michigan hired Scott Rex as an assistant sports information director. Most recently, Rex has served in the same capacity at Lafayette ... Shaun Russell was selected as sports information intern at Roger Williams ... Coppin State named John Kneisly as assistant athletics communications director. Kneisly has been a media relations intern at Delaware ... Marci Lippert and Andy Sturgill were added as athletics media relations interns at Delaware.

Strength and conditioning ­ Ball State chose Eric Norman as strength and conditioning coach. For the past seven years, Norman, who replaces Wade Russell, has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Penn State ... Tom Myslinski was announced as strength and conditioning coach at Robert Morris. For the past two years, Myslinski has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the NFL's Cleveland Browns.

Ticket manager ­ Rob Richards was promoted to ticket manager at Ball State to succeed Joe Carr. Richards has been with the school for 12 years and most recently has been associate ticket manager.

Conferences

Michael L. Slive was awarded a contract extension as commissioner at the Southeastern Conference through July 31, 2009. Slive has been in charge of the conference since 2002 ... Don Page, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference supervisor of football officials, announced plans to retire at the end of the 2005-06 academic year. Page, who also serves as supervisor of men's basketball officials for the league, has fulfilled football-related responsibilities since retiring as director of athletics at Wisconsin-River Falls in 1992 ... The Horizon League announced Robert Hester as director of communications, Amy Wisser as championships and compliance assistant, Lindsay Martin as communications intern and Crystal Soblo as administrative intern. Hester was an assistant and an associate sports information director at Northern Illinois from 1995 to 2004, and Wisser, a 2005 graduate of Indianapolis, served as an intern with the Great Lakes Valley Conference during the past academic year. Martin is a 2005 graduate of Butler and has completed internships with the Indianapolis Ice minor league hockey club and USA Gymnastics, while Soblo, a 2005 graduate of Michigan, has been a marketing and development intern with the A2 Junior Golf Association ... Mandi Copeland was elevated to director of media services and Bryan McGowan was chosen as assistant commissioner for public affairs at the Southern Conference. Copeland has spent the past five years as assistant director for public affairs at the league and, for the past six years, McGowan has worked at the Mid-American Conference, most recently as associate media relations director ... Gregg Kaye was elevated to associate commissioner at the Sunshine State Conference. Kaye has been an assistant commissioner since joining the league in August 2001.

National office

Stephen Webb and Jeff Myers were hired as assistant directors of enforcement. Webb has been an associate attorney at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP and Myers was an associate attorney at Gottschlich & Portune, LLP.

Corrections

A list from the World Anti-Doping Agency in the August 29 issue of The NCAA News about the effects of various substances contained misleading information. The NCAA ban on stimulants does not include pseudoephedrine. The NCAA does not ban the use of beta 2 agonists when administered via inhalation (NCAA Bylaw 31.2.3.4.1-(d)). Also, the NCAA bans heroin as a street drug, but does not ban narcotic analgesics generally. For more information, go to http://www1.ncaa.org/

The school at which Sara Wilson was recently hired as sports information director and head volleyball coach was incorrectly identified in the September 12 edition of The NCAA Record. Wilson joined the athletics department at Wesleyan (Georgia).

Notables

Dennis Poppe, NCAA managing director for football and baseball, was named as the 2005 recipient of the Wilbur Snypp Award, which is presented annually by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America in recognition of contributions to college baseball. Poppe is a 31-year member of the NCAA staff and is responsible for all issues related to baseball as well as football.

DEATHS

Kwabena "Kobby" Buanya, a men's soccer student-athlete at Lawrence, drowned September 8. Buanya, 21, was a sophomore and a first-year member on the team.

Michael J. Adanti, president emeritus at Southern Connecticut State, died July 31. Adanti was 65.
