Schumacher named head hoops coach

 Wisconsin-Oshkosh has named Terri Schumacher as head women's basketball coach and assistant to the intramurals director. Schumacher succeeds Pam Ruder, who became head women's basketball coach at Southwestern (Texas).

For the past 13 years, Schumacher has been in charge of the girls' basketball program and physical education teacher at Oshkosh West (Wisconsin) High School. Since 2005, Oshkosh West has posted a 131-15 mark, registered a perfect 26-0 season in 2003 and captured back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004. Named the Associated Press Wisconsin Coach of the Year in 2003, Schumacher also served as head girls' basketball coach at Plymouth (Wisconsin) High School from 1987 to 1992.

Schumacher spent two years at Wisconsin-La Crosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where the 1986 graduate earned all-America recognition and was named the 1985 NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the American Women's Sports Federation.

Director of athletics

Clarion announced Dave Katis as director of athletics to succeed the retired Robert Carlson. Katis has been director of major gifts and college development since 1997, and he spent 2004-05 as acting associate athletics director.

Associate directors of athletics

Derek van der Merwe was promoted to senior associate athletics director for business and compliance at Central Michigan. Van der Merwe has been with the athletics department since 1997 and has been an associate athletics director for compliance since 2002 ... Doug Dowdy was hired as associate athletics director for facilities and event operations Delaware State. Dowdy has been an athletics consultant since January and formerly was assistant athletics director for internal operations at Illinois State ... Doug Banks was selected as assistant athletics director for annual giving at Illinois State. Banks has been with the athletics administration at Kansas State since 1999.

Assistant directors of athletics

Trinity (District of Columbia) hired Bob Ginsburg as assistant athletics director for sports information and compliance, head women's soccer coach and assistant softball coach ... Garry Gibson was named as assistant athletics director for academic affairs and student services at Texas-Pan American. Gibson, who replaces Tish Brewer, has been senior academic coordinator in the student athletics division at Vanderbilt since 1996 ... Patrick Lee was hired as assistant director of athletics for marketing, promotion, fund-raising and events at Alaska Fairbanks. Lee has been an event management and marketing consultant with E&E Consulting and Marketing Services ... North Carolina-Greensboro selected Josh Larsen as assistant athletics director for facilities. Larsen succeeds Daniel Zuber.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Bemidji State chose Tim Bellew as head coach to replace interim head coach Mike Benke and former head coach Chris Brown. Bellew has been head coach at Kansas Wesleyan since 1995 and has guided the Coyotes to three National Small College Athletics Association national championships ... Christopher Arnold was selected as head coach at Keuka. Arnold, who replaces Bob Bergholtz, was head coach at Dundee Central School in New York last season ... Temple head coach James "Skip" Wilson announced his retirement. Wilson has compiled 1,034 victories and two College World Series appearances since taking over the program in 1960.

Baseball assistants ­ San Diego tabbed Jay Johnson as associate recruiting coordinator and hitting coach and Mark Viramontes as a volunteer assistant coach. Johnson has been head coach at Point Loma Nazarene and Viramontes most recently has been an assistant coach at Cal State Los Angeles. The school also named Chris Cannizzaro, a volunteer assistant for the past seven seasons, as director of baseball operations. Eric Valenzuela, pitching coach for the past three years, was elevated to top assistant coach ... Bryan Peters was appointed as an assistant coach at Stetson. Peters, who has been an assistant at South Florida for nine years, succeeds Frank Martello ... Kiko Reyes was selected as an assistant coach and Gene Calamari was selected as pitching coach at Fordham. Reyes has been head coach at Monroe College and Calamari has been pitching coach at Byram Hills (New York) High School for the past four seasons ... Muskingum chose Scott Ringhiser as a graduate assistant.

Men's basketball ­ Wisconsin-Stevens-Point's Jack Bennett announced his retirement as head coach. In nine seasons, Bennett guided the school to five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and two national titles. Associate head coach Bob Semling was chosen as Bennett's interim successor ... Jack Perri resigned as head coach at Rhode Island College to become an assistant coach at Long Island. Jonathan Gibbs, an assistant coach with the program, was selected as interim head coach.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Salem State appointed John Presioza as an assistant coach ... McNeese State appointed Rodney McConnell as an assistant ... West Virginia Wesleyan added David Gallup as an assistant coach ... Lamar Barrett was named as an assistant coach at New Haven ... Georgia State hired Mark Dannhoff as third assistant coach. For the past three seasons, Dannhoff has been an assistant at Tulane ... Donald Payton was selected as assistant men's basketball coach and assistant sports information director at Barton ... Army added Kendrick Saunders as an assistant. Saunders has been an assistant coach at Frostburg State for two years.

Women's basketball ­ Steven Gray was hired as head coach at Maine-Presque Isle. Gray formerly was an assistant at Hardin-Simmons ... Equestrian assistant ­ Jennifer Wiggins assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin.

Field hockey ­ Randolph-Macon chose Crystal Carper as head coach. Carper has been an assistant coach at Longwood and James Madison ... Colleen Groszer was appointed as head coach at Trinity (District of Columbia) ... Kenyon named Christine Kilroe as interim head coach to replace Robin Cash, who resigned after three seasons. Most recently, Kilroe has been coaching in Canada.

Field hockey assistants ­ Erika Smith was tabbed as an assistant coach at Bridgewater State. Smith is a 2005 graduate of the school, where she was a three-sport student-athlete in field hockey, lacrosse and club ice hockey ... Notre Dame (Maryland) added Lori Baran as assistant coach.

Football assistants ­ Hamilton added Chris Leavenworth as offensive line coach, Chimezie Okobi as defensive line coach and David Szentesy as linebackers coach ... Steve Femino was chosen as run game coordinator at Bridgewater State ... Muskingum hired Al Seagraves as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Andrew Bentley as defensive line coach, William Webb as running backs graduate assistant coach and Matthew Nardo as defensive graduate assistant coach.

Men's and women's golf ­ Belmont added Brian Costello as head men's coach. Most recently, Costello has been associate men's coach at Detroit ... Jim Heller was tabbed as head coach at Swarthmore. For the past 10 years, Heller has been head golf coach, volunteer assistant athletics director and ninth-grade girls' basketball coach at Springfield (Pennsylvania) High School ... Bill Kuchler, former head coach at Lakeland, was selected as head coach at Lynchburg. Kuchler succeeds Will Andrews, who will continue with the program as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Brockport State's Brian Dickinson has taken a leave of absence to serve as director of the Seymour College Union on campus. The school named James Eccles, an assistant men's coach, as interim head coach ... St. Cloud State's Craig Dahl resigned as head men's coach. In 18 years in charge of the program, Dahl has guided the Huskies to a 338-309-52 record.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants ­ Amy Quinlan was named as an assistant women's coach and Brendon Knight was tabbed as an assistant men's coach at Hamilton.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Dan Kanach was elevated to head women's coach at Randolph-Macon. Kanach has been interim head coach for the past season.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant ­ James "Bois" Farrar was appointed as an assistant men's coach at Hamilton.

Men's soccer ­ Post chose Ted Haley as head coach to replace Eric DaCosta, who became head coach at Quinnipiac. For the past six years, Haley has worked as athletics director and head boys' soccer coach at Dublin School in New Hampshire ... City Tech named Emeka Ezeugo as head coach. Ezeugo, formerly an Olympian and World Cup player for Nigeria, takes over for Rodger Ramallo-Fernandez.

Men's soccer assistants ­ Salem State selected Peter Mendel as an assistant coach... Southwestern (Texas) chose Matt Torok as an assistant coach ... Matt McLagan was tabbed as an assistant coach at Caldwell ... Fordham added Eric Masters and James Hunt as assistants ... Tim Connell and John Zimniski were chosen as assistant coaches at Misericordia.

Women's soccer ­ Matthew Okoh was hired as head coach at Delaware State. Okoh, most recently the head coach at Grambling State and formerly in charge of the program at Nichols, succeeds Duane Henry.

Women's soccer assistants ­ Chris Barker accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Trinity (District of Columbia) ... Southwestern announced Glenn Holzer as an assistant coach ... Bevin Walsh was named as an assistant coach at Caldwell ... Christopher Klein and Laurene Kocylowski Carlin were added as assistants at Misericordia ... Annis, who takes over for Shanda Ness, most recently retired after 22 years as head girls' coach at Maple River (Minnesota) High School ... Heather Townsend was hired as head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. Townsend formerly was an assistant with the program in 2001-02.

Softball assistants ­ Florida International hired Meaghan Almon as an assistant coach ... Lacy Stallings assumed responsibilities as an assistant at West Virginia Wesleyan ... Lincoln Memorial appointed Jennifer Kohler as an assistant coach ... Megan Ciolli accepted duties as an assistant coach at Loyola ... Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Steve Brandt was promoted to head men's and women's coach at Southwestern (Texas). Brandt was an assistant with the program last year.

Rachel Beecraft was tabbed as track and field and cross country graduate assistant at Muskingum ... Chicago State added Edward Wallace as an assistant men's coach. Wallace has been an assistant at Elmhurst and formerly coached at North Central and Chicago ... Brian Cunningham was named as an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Texas-Pan American. For the past two years, Cunningham has worked as assistant men's and women's track and field and cross country assistant at William and Mary.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Trinity (District of Columbia) announced Marcus Robinson as head coach ... Ennio Escoto was selected as head women's coach at Mount St. Vincent. Escoto formerly was head women's coach at Maritime State in 2003 and 2004 ... Patrick Dietz was chosen as head men's and women's coach at City Tech. Men's and women's water polo ­ UC Irvine promoted Marc Hunt to head men's coach to succeed Ted Newland, who was named as coach emeritus. Hunt has spent the past four years as an assistant with the program.

Athletic trainers ­ Bridgewater State selected Jeanne O'Brien as head athletic trainer ... John Paolini and Wendy Wheeler were added as athletic trainers at East Stroudsburg. Paolini and Wheeler succeed Keith Vanic and Ryanne Shotwell ... New Haven chose Daniel Unverzagt as head athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers ­ David Vasquez was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Niagara ... Stephen F. Austin selected William "Billy" Bobo as an assistant athletic trainer ... Nina Holley and Paul Fernandes were hired as assistant athletic trainers at Fordham ... New Haven tabbed Amy Miller as an assistant athletic trainer.

Compliance assistant ­ Central Michigan elevated Josh Moon to compliance coordinator. Moon has been a compliance assistant since December 2004.

Development ­ Craig Willey was chosen as Chippewa Club Director at Central Michigan. For the past 31/2 years, Willey has worked as assistant director of marketing for athletics at the school.

Life skills ­ Southern Illinois tabbed Brooke Morgan as life skills coordinator. Most recently, Morgan has been an assistant academic counselor at Louisville.

Marketing and promotions ­ Jacob VanRyn was named as facilities, marketing and programming director for athletics at Saint Rose.

Sports information ­ Greg Sage was awarded responsibilities as director of media relations at Belmont ... Sara Wilson was named as sports information director and head volleyball coach at Wesleyan (Connecticut). Wilson has been marketing coordinator for the Nashville Sports Council ... Ryan Yanoshak accepted responsibilities as sports information director at East Stroudsburg. Yanoshak was a graduate assistant at the school last year ... Georgia State appointed Carlton White as sports information director.

Sports information assistants ­ Hamilton named Mike Kennett as sports information assistant ... Joseph Beitz was hired as an assistant sports information director at Salem State ... Stephen F. Austin announced Brian Ross as assistant sports information director and Adelaida Sanchez as sports information graduate assistant ... Army hired Danah Allen as assistant director of athletics communications. For the past year, Allen has worked as a sports information intern at Syracuse ... Tim Collins and Jim Wrobel were announced as media relations interns at Holy Cross. Wrobel also will work with compliance ... Texas-Pan American named Jeff Sutton as assistant sports information director. Strength and conditioning ­ Tom Davis and Jerold Gaitan were selected as strength and conditioning coaches at Texas State. Davis has been strength and conditioning coordinator at Langston University and Gaitan was with the High Desert Mavericks, a minor league affiliate of Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals ... Tredell Dorsey was selected as strength and conditioning coach at Georgia State ... North Carolina-Greensboro named Mark Williams as strength and conditioning coach.

Conferences

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named Harry Stinson III as sports information director ... Joseph Rocha was announced as coordinator of women's basketball officials for the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Rocha has 10 years of experience as a college basketball official and has officiated in the NCAA Division II basketball tournament ... The Western Athletic Conference selected Anthony Archbald as assistant commissioner for compliance to replace Patrick Hairston. Archbald has been an assistant director of compliance with the Mountain West Conference for the past two years ... The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation announced the following as members of the 2005-06 executive committee: Bernard F. O'Connor, president at DeSales, chair; James T. Harris, president at Widener, vice-chair; Theodore E. Long, president at Elizabethtown, treasurer; and Joseph E. (Tim) Gilmour, president at Wilkes, as secretary. The league also appointed Katie Imes as assistant to the executive director.

Associations

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame appointed Dan Jenkins to a three-year term as historian. Jenkins is a noted sportswriter and novelist ... Linda Poncin resigned as coordinator of media relations with the American Volleyball Coaches Association to become an assistant sports information director at Colorado.

Notables

Trinity (Connecticut) head coach Marina Traub was selected as the 2004-05 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division III coach of the year. Traub, in her first year in charge of the program, guided the school to a 6-0 record as well as the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship, New England Division III championship and the Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational championship during the season.

DEATHS

Senior Illinois Wesleyan football student-athlete Doug Schmied died of heatstroke August 25. He was 21. Schmied, an offensive guard, was a two-year starter and co-captain of the team.

Roderick G. Demps, a former Tennessee Tech football student-athlete, died August 22. He was 45. Demps, an Army Military Police Brigade commander stationed in Hawaii, was a linebacker with the Golden Eagles from 1977 to 1980. He joined the Army in 1982 and had completed assignments in Egypt, South Korea and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Former Columbia football student-athlete and athletics administrator Kenneth Germann died August 29. He was 84. Germann, who spent three years at receiver for the Lions, was freshman football coach in 1957 and later became an assistant athletics director at the school. He assumed assistant athletics directors responsibilities at Rugers in 1965. Germann retured to Columbia as director of athletics in 1968 and served in that role until 1974, when he left to work as commissioner of the Southern Conference, a position he held until 1987.
