DeSales chooses Guarino as head coachs

 DeSales has named Mary Guarino as head women's soccer coach.

Guarino spent two years as an assistant coach at Boston College. She also served as an assistant at William Smith for one year. For the past year, Guarino has worked as top assistant at West Chester.

A 2000 graduate of Boston College with a bachelor of science degree in marketing, Guarino contributed 33 goals and 21 (87 points) and earned all-Big East Conference second-team honors as a member of the Eagles' soccer team. She continued to play soccer professionally with the Boston Renegades of the W-League. Guarino also competed with the Rochester Reign and Steel City Sparks of the semi-pro Women's Premier Soccer League.

Duquesne appointed Greg Amodio as director of athletics. Amodio has been associate athletics director for marketing at Xavier ... Oberlin selected Joe Karlgaard as interim athletics director. Karlgaard, who takes over for Vin Lananna, has been assistant athletics director for external affairs and media relations ... Becker announced Craig S. Barnett as director of athletics and head men's ice hockey coach. The ice hockey program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2006. Barnett formerly has been head coach at Findlay and an assistant coach at Kent State and Mercyhurst ... Herb Deromedi, director of athletics at Central Michigan, announced his retirement, effective January 15. Deromedi joined the school as an assistant footbll coach in 1967, formerly spent 16 years as head football coach and has been in charge of the athletics department since 1994.

Associate directors of athletics

UC San Diego elevated Mike Matoso to senior associate athletics director and promoted Shaney Fink to associate athletics director for compliance and student services. Matoso has been with the school for seven years and most recently has been associate athletics director for compliance and administration since 2003. Fink, who also will serve as senior woman administrator, has been with the school for seven years, most recently as assistant director of athletics for academics and student services ... Rosalyn Dunlap was tabbed as associate athletics director for compliance at Florida A&M. Dunlap formerly was director of compliance at Missouri. She also served as associate director for the National Consortium for Academics and Sports from 1998 to 2003 ... Scott Barnes was appointed senior associate athletics director for advancement at Washington. Barnes has been the athletics director at Eastern Washington since 1999 ... Matt Fenley was elevated to associate athletics director for compliance and student services at Stephen F. Austin ... Illinois State hired Randy Welniak as senior associate athletics director for external operations. Welniak has been associate athletics director for external operations at Fresno State for the past three years.

Bowling ­ Jonathon Koltz was named as head coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Most recently, Koltz has been in sales at Weber Bowling and Awards in Wisconsin.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Steve Eles was hired as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Lake Superior State. Eles, who replaces Drew Ludtke, has been a graduate assistant at Tiffin for the past two seasons ... Mount Ida selected Shaun Harrington as head women's coach. Since 2003, Harrington has worked as athletics director at Wellbridge Athletic Club in Massachusetts ... Bates named Jennifer "Jay" Hartshorn as head women's cross country and track and field coach. Hartshorn, top assistant coach at Syracuse since 2001, takes over for Sally Hirsch ... Cortland State appointed Matthew Moran as head men's and women's coach. Moran, who formerly was a volunteer assistant at Penn State from 2000 to 2004, succeeds Jack Daniels ... Stefanie Scalessa accepted additional responsibilities as head men's and women's cross country coach at Temple. The programs are scheduled to begin varsity competition this season. Football ­ Ed DeGeorge announced plans to retire as head coach at Beloit, effective at the end of the 2005 season. DeGeorge has been in charge of the program since 1977 and formerly was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Colorado College.

Football assistants ­ West Virginia Wesleyan added John Pennington as wide receivers coach, Mike Counahan as secondary coach, Trent Linville as defensive line coach and Del Smith as student assistant linebackers coach ... Mark Hargis accepted duties as wide receivers coach at Guilford. Most recently, Hargis has been offensive coordinator and associate head coach with the Elancourt Templiers of the French Premier League ... Tulane chose Dennis Polian as director of football operations. Polian has been assistant athletics director for special projects and director of football operations at Columbia for the past year ... Darryl Franklin was named as a graduate assistant for the defense at Central Michigan. For the past five years, Franklin has been a student assistant coach at Missouri ... Statler has been head men's coach since 1996 and has been in charge of the women's program since 2000.

Men's and women's golf assistant ­ Marv Ott was named as an assistant men's coach at Wartburg.

Men's and women's gymnastics ­ Ball State hired Lisa Woody Simonton as head coach. Simonton, who takes over for the retired Mary Roth, has spent the past six years as head women's coach at Air Force.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Jim Roque was promoted to head men's coach at Lake Superior State. Roque succeeds Frank Anzalone.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants ­ Manhattanville chose Scott Gordon as an assistant men's coach ... Joe Exter was named as an assistant coach at American International. Exter, who replaces Bobby Ferraris, has been playing with the Wheeling (West Virginia) Nailers, an affiliate of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins in the East Coast Hockey League ... Saint Michael's promoted Anne Blair to full-time assistant women's coach. Blair has been a part-time assistant for three seasons.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Dominican (New York) appointed Nick Ballou as head men's coach to succeed the retiring Dale Abeling. Ballou has been an assistant coach at Geneseo State ... Terry Corcoran was chosen as head men's coach at Elizabethtown. Corcoran has been the men's coach at Skidmore since 1996, and before that he coached at Washington (Maryland) ... Kenneth S. Cameron Jr. accepted responsibilities as head men's lacrosse coach at Becker. The program is scheduled to begin varsity play in March of next year. Cameron has been head women's soccer coach at the school, but will relinquish those duties ... Bowen Holden was named as head women's coach at Boston College. Since 2004, Holden has been associate head coach at Georgetown, where she also spent three years as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants ­ James Madison added Lisa Staedt and Matt Lawicki as assistant women's coaches. Staedt was an assistant at Virginia Tech for two years and Lawicki has been an assistant at Davidson.

NYIT hired Kristen Bakalar as head coach. For the past year, Bakalar has served as athletics director at Briarcliffe.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Simpson appointed David Cleveland as head men's and women's coach. Cleveland, who succeeds Wayne Stacy, has been head boys' track coach at the high-school level since 1994.

Men's and women's track and field assistant ­ Ziggy Szelagowicz was tabbed as an assistant men's and women's coach at Trinity (Texas).

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Carol Munger was appointed as head coach at Clarkson. Munger has played professionally in the National French League since 2003 ... Central State (Ohio) named Shirley Austin-Cummins as head men's and women's coach. Austin-Cummins formerly was head girls' coach at Yellow Springs (Ohio) High School ... Craig Letourneau accepted responsibilities as head women's volleyball coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Rhode Island College ... Michelle Kreeger was promoted to head volleyball coach and compliance coordinator at Franklin Pierce. Kreeger, who also has been an assistant women's lacrosse coach at the school, takes over the volleyball program for Jayson King, who will concentrate on the baseball program and serve as athletics facilities coordinator ... Wrestling ­ Larry "Zeke" Jones was hired as head coach at Pennsylvania. For the past seven seasons, Jones, who served as the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, has been an assistant coach at West Viriginia.

Academic services ­ Mark McGreevy assumed responsibilities as academic coordinator at UC Riverside. McGreevy has been a graduate intern in compliance at the school and formerly spent two years as director of compliance and sports information director at St. Martin's ... Northern Colorado named Scott Swain as director of student-athlete academic support. For the past two years, Swain has been assistant director for academics and eligibility for athletics at Colorado.

Trinity (Texas) appointed Josh Moczygemba as coordinator of event management and assistant sports information director ... Jack Holleran was selected as assistant director of athletics communication at Hobart and William Smith.

Strength and conditioning ­ Lee Munger was hired as strength and conditioning coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Since 2002, Munger has been head strength and conditioning coach at South Dakota State.

Strength and conditioning assistant ­ Kelly Wise accepted responsibilities as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Manhattanville.

Ticketing services ­ Rich Haas was promoted to director of ticket sales and event marketing at Lehigh. For the past four years, Haas has worked as director of ticket operations.

Conferences

Matt Troha was named as sports information director for the Midwest Conference. Troha most recently has been serving as media relations assistant at Mid-Continent Conference ... The New York Collegiate Athletic Conference named Jerry Milani as associate commissioner for media relations. Milani is an account supervisor at Worldwide Marketing and Media Group ... The Sunshine State Conference announced Ann Walker as assistant to the commissioner. Walker has been with Minnesota State Mankato since 1998 and most recently has served as assistant athletics director ... The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced Brenda Blessing, faculty athletics representative at Missouri Western State, as president; Kathy Anderson, assistant athletics director at Northwest Missouri State, as vice-president; and Jerry Wollmering, athletics director at Truman State, as secretary-treasurer, of the league's Institutional Representatives Council. Named as officers to the conference's Chief Executive Officers Council were Tom Bryant, president at Pittsburg State, chair; Jerry Farley, president at Washburn, vice-chair; and Barbara Dixon, president at Truman State, secretary ... Kaitlyn Cerco was appointed as sport management and compliance assistant and Nick Nagel was selected as media relations assistant at the Patriot League.

Corrections

A story about actions taken by the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee in the August 15 issue of The NCAA News misidentified committee Chair John Lyons as the head swimming coach at La Salle University. Lyons formerly was the swimming coach at La Salle but is now an associate athletics director at the school.

DEATHS

Nancy Bottge, head women's softball coach at Florida Tech, died August 8. She was 48. Bottge spent 11 seasons in charge of the program at Florida Tech and also served as head coach at Bloomfield for 10 years. She compiled a career record of 501-314-2.

Jessica Hanson and Adam Bacon, student-athletes at Loyola Marymount, died in a car accident August 5. Hanson, a member of the women's soccer squad, and Bacon, a men's cross country student-athlete, were entering their senior seasons.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jim O'Hora died August 5. He was 90. O'Hora, a member of the Nittany Lions coaching staff for 31 years, joined the program as a full-time assistant in 1946. A part of the 1968 and 1969 unbeaten teams that captured consecutive Orange Bowl wins, he served as a line coach, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach during his tenure. O'Hora also was a three-time letter-winner at center for Penn State from 1933 to 1935.

Susquehanna cross country and track and field student-athlete Justin Miller died July 17 in a drowning accident. He was 20. Miller had turned in the sixth best time in school history in the 1,500 meters (outdoor) and the seventh-best indoor time in March and February, respectively, of this year.

Former Franklin Pierce basketball student-athlete Kevin Scott died of cancer August 9. Scott, 26, was a four-year letter-winner for the Ravens. The 2001-02 all-Northeast-10 Conference selection ranked 22nd in program history in career points (1,181), seventh in career rebounds (693) and fourth in blocked shots (138).

Former Colorado track and field student-athlete Gil Cruter died recently at the age of 90. Cruter, one of the first two African-American varsity student-athletes at Colorado, set world records in the high jump in 1936 and 1938 as a member of the school's track and field squad. He also was a member of the U.S. track and field squads that tourned Europe in the late 1930s and was selected as an alternate on the 1936 U.S. Olympic Team. In addition, Cruter coached track and served as director of health and physical education at Southern.
