Former LSU coach Sue Gunter dies

Sue Gunter died August 4 at the age of 66.

The third-winningest coach in women's college basketball history with 708 career victories, Gunter is perhaps most well known for the 22 seasons she spent guiding LSU teams. She came to the school in 1982 and under her direction, the Lady Tigers compiled a record of 442-221, earned 14 NCAA tournament appearances, one Final Four and three Elite Eight appearances, and two Southeastern Conference championships. Gunter, a two-time SEC coach of the year, stepped down as head coach during the 2003-04 season due to health concerns.

Before her run at LSU, Gunter was in charge of the women's basketball program at Stephen F. Austin from 1965 to 1980. She guided the Ladyjacks to a 266-87 mark in 15 years, in addition to coaching softball, tennis and track. Gunter began her collegiate coaching career in 1963 at Middle Tennessee State, where she led teams to back-to-back undefeated seasons in her two seasons at the school.

Gunter was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and will be inducted posthumously into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September.
