Frazier assumes director post at Merrimack


 Merrimack has named Sean T. Frazier as director of athletics.

Frazier, the director of athletics at Clarkson since 2002, replaces interim athletics director Chris Serino, who resigned after seven years. Before assuming responsibilities at Clarkson, Frazier served as director of athletics and recreation at Manhattanville from 1999 to 2002. In addition, he also spent four years at Maine, including one year as an assistant athletics director.

Frazier earned a bachelor of arts in communication at Alabama, where he was a four-year member of the football team. He also earned a master's degree in higher education/educational leadership administraton at Maine.

Chief executive officers

Texas President Larry R. Faulkner announced his resignation, effective March 1 or upon the selection of a successor ... Colby-Sawyer announced Philip H. Jordan Jr. as interim president, effective October 1. Jordan is president emeritus at Kenyon ... Wentworth Institute appointed Zorica Pantic-Tanner as president. Pantic-Tanner has been dean of the college of engineering at Texas-San Antonio ... Janie C. Park was selected as president at Chadron State, effective August 15. Park has been provost and academic vice-chancellor and professor of biological sciences at Montana State-Billings.

Directors of athletics

Deb Steward was appointed as director of athletics at William Smith. Steward, who replaces Susan Bassett, has been an assistant athletics director at Ithaca for the past three years ... Alaska Fairbanks' Cory Schwartz resigned as director of athletics and campus recreation. The school announced Forrest Karr, compliance coordinator and athletics academic coordinator, as Schwartz's interim successor ... Timothy J. Autry Jr. was named as director of athletics at Clafin ... Delaware State announced Chuck Bell as director of athletics. Bell, who succeeds interim athletics director Ed Davis, formerly was athletics director at San Jose State and Utah State ... Robert Hill was appointed as athletics director at Stephen F. Austin, effective September 1, to succeed the retiring Steve McCarty. Hill has been with the school's athletics administration for 19 years, most recently serving as an associate athletics director ... Buffalo hired Warde J. Manuel as director of athletics, effective August 29. Manuel has been an associate athletics director at Michigan.

Senior woman administrator

Kim Kawamoto accepted responsibilities as senior woman administrator at Army.

Deputy directors of athletics

Eugene Marshall, Jim Knowlton and Ed Rose were appointed as deputy directors of athletics at Army. For the past seven years, Marshall has been athletics director at Ramapo. Knowlton enters his third year at Army while Rose, who has been with the school since 1987, has served as senior associate athletics director for finance and administration since 2002 ... Albany (New York) named Rick Coe as deputy director of athletics. Coe has been in charge of athletics business operations at the school since 2002.

Associate directors of athletics

Shippensburg named Jeff Michaels as an associate athletics director. Michaels formerly was an assistant to the athletics director at Slippery Rock ... Bob Beretta was elevated to senior associate athletics director for athletics communications at Army. Beretta, who has been at the school for 19 years, has been in charge of the school's athletics communications for 11 years, most recently working as an associate athletics director ... Stony Brook promoted Paul Schlickmann to executive associate director of athletics and elevated Donna Woodruff to senior associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. Schlickmann has been a senior associate athletics director for the past two years and Woodruff joined the athletics administration as associate athletics director for administration and student-athlete welfare and senior woman administrator in May of last year ... Molloy promoted Karen Freed to associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Vin Lananna was hired as associate athletics director and director of track and field and cross country at Oregon. Lananna has been director of athletics and physical education at Oberlin since 2003 and formerly guided Stanford to five national and 17 Pacific-10 Conference track championships in 11 years ... Saint Louis named Mark Wright as associate athletics director for development, effective August 12. For the past three years, Wright has worked as director of development and special gifts at Ohio State ... Charlie Voelker was chosen as associate athletics director for external affairs at Albany (New York). Voelker has been with the school since 2003 ... Devin Crosby was selected as associate director of athletics for external operations at Saint Louis. Since July 2002, Crosby, who succeeds John Garrison, has been assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions at Houston.

For the past two years, Edmondson has been director of athletics marketing ... Defiance hired Dawn Wickstrum as an assistant athletics director ... Tripp Keister was selected as an assistant athletics director and head baseball coach at Wesley. Keister has been an associate athletics director at Delaware State since 2002 ... Costello has been with the school for four years and has been director of marketing and promotions since 2002. Tousignant has been director of operations for athletics facilities since 2003 ... Albany (New York) announced Megan Buchanan as assistant athletics director for facilities, scheduling, game management and community outreach, Kevin Galuski as assistant director of athletics for equipment and operations and Maria Moon as assistant athletics director for recreation, intramural and campus affairs. Buchanan and Galuski have most recently served as directors of facilities and equipment operations, respectively, and Moon joined the school in September 2000 as director of recreation and intramurals.

Baseball ­ Westfield State elevated Ray Arra to head coach. Arra, an assistant coach with the program in 2003 and 2004, served as acting head coach during the past season ... Jon Sjogren was hired as head coach at Rollins. Sjogren, who has been head coach at Bryant for the past 14 years, replaces Bob Rikeman ... Lander appointed Bill Jarman as head coach. Jarman has been pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Coastal Carolina for the past 10 years ... Gene Baker resigned as head coach at Guilford. In eight years, Baker led the program to a 179-149 record ... Long Island's Frank Giannone announced his retirement as head coach. Giannone led the Blackbirds to a 544-497-4 record and at least a share of five conference championships in 29 years ... Sam Piraro was awarded a two-year contract extension through 2008 as head coach at San Jose State. Piraro has led the program for 18 seasons and has twice been named Western Athletic Conference coach of the year.

Baseball assistants ­ New Paltz State appointed Thomas McTamaney as an assistant coach. Since 2001, McTamaney has been associate head coach at Dutchess County (New York) Community College ... A.J. Corbin was hired as an assistant coach at Norfolk State. Corbin, who spent last season as a volunteer assistant with the program, takes over for Enrique Mendieta ... New Haven selected Raphael Cerrato as associate head coach. Cerrato has been hitting, outfield and infield coach as well as recruiting coordinator at Brown for the past five years.

Men's basketball ­ James Green was selected as head coach at Mississippi Valley to replace Lafayette Stribling. Green formerly spent eight seasons as head coach at Southern Mississippi ... Illinois head coach Bruce Weber was awarded a two-year contract extension through the 2010-11 season. Weber led Illinois to a 37-2 record and an appearance in the national championship game last season ... Darryl Jacobs resigned as head coach at Felician to become an assistant coach at Delaware ... Fordham extended the contract of head coach Dereck Whittenburg through the 2010 season. Whittenburg has been in charge of the Rams for the past two seasons ... Al Seibert was chosen as head coach at New Haven to replace Jay Young. For the past five seasons, Seibert has been at Hartford, most recently serving as associate head coach.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Tusculum appointed Jeromy Yetter as an assistant coach. Yetter has been an assistant at Slippery Rock ... Jamal Palmer was chosen as an assistant at Slippery Rock. Palmer formerly was an assistant at Shippensburg ... Haverford assistant coach Ty Taylor resigned after four seasons to become head women's basketball coach at Harcum College ... Merrimack awarded head coaching duties to Elizabeth Briggs to succeed Ann McInerney, who resigned after six years to become head coach at Maine. Women's basketball assistants ­ New Paltz State selected Matt Stamerjohn as an assistant coach ... Saint Louis tabbed Petra Jackson as an assistant coach. For the past three seasons, Jackson has been head coach at Shoreline (Washington) Community College ... Lauren Tartamella, Scott Green and Corinne Taylor were added as assistants at Molloy ... Marlin Chinn accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Seton Hall. Most recently, Chinn has worked as an assistant at Mount St. Mary's ... Lehigh promoted Lindsay Davis to assistant coach and tabbed Jessica DePalo as a graduate assistant coach. Davis has been a graduate assistant coach for the past two seasons and replaces Milena Flores. DePalo is a 2005 graduate of Lehigh, where as a member of the women's basketball squad she earned Patriot League Player of the Year recognition as a senior.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Jim Akita was hired as head men's cross country coach and assistant men's track and field coach at Elmhurst. Akita has been a graduate assistant coach at Rockford.

Men's and women's cross country assistant ­ Haverford appointed Prentiss Clark as an assistant women's coach.

Field hockey ­ Stacey Montgomery was named as interim head coach at Haverford. Most recently, Montgomery has been an assistant basketball coach and assistant lacrosse coach at the middle-school and high-school levels.

Field hockey assistant ­ Sarah Fosdick assumed duties as an assistant coach at New Paltz State.

Football ­ Florida A&M tabbed Rubin Carter as head coach to replace Billy Joe. Carter, a former defensive tackle for the NFL's Denver Broncos, has been defensive line coach at Temple for the past 16 months.

Football assistants ­ Wesley tabbed Rob Wikel as linebackers coach. Wikel was defensive coordinator at St. Mary's (Ohio) High School ... Greensboro added Alexander Wright as offensive coordinator. Wright was outside receivers coach at West Texas A&M for one season ... Assumption chose Aaron Dobbins as running backs coach, Ty McGuire as defensive secondary coach and special teams coordinator, Tonny Navarro as quarterbacks coach and Jeff Moore as linebackers coach. Dobbins most recently was running backs coach and linebackers coach at the high-school level and McGuire formerly was an assistant at Kenyon, South Dakota School of Mines, Whittier and Muhlenberg. Navarro has been an assistant coach at Stratford (Connecticut) High School since 2002. Moore recently graduated from Assumption, where he was a four-year starter and major reserve on the football squad ... Brian Sheehan was tabbed as receivers coach at Hobart. Sheehan, who replaces Matt Daley, has worked as an assistant coach at Heidelberg for the past two seasons. The school also announced Scott Yoder, who was receivers coach last season, as secondary coach ... Thomas Casey was appointed as defensive coordinator at Western Illinois. Casey has been defensive coordinator at Feather River College and Tyler Junior College for the past three seasons ... Westminster (Pennsylvania) added Dwayne Pavkovich as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Clark Rolli as assistant defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, Bill Hand as offensive line coach and running game coordinator, Gary Schooley as secondary coach, Sean Ross as linebackers coach and Paul D'Imperio as wide receivers coach. Pavkovich, formerly an assistant at Hiram, was offensive coordinator at Jack Britt (North Carolina) High School last season, and Rolli was a graduate assistant defensive line coach at Waynesburg for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Hand joins the program from Geneva College, where he was offensive line coach. Schooley most recently was head coach at New Castle (Pennsylvania) High School from 1995 to 2004. Westminster (Pennsylvania) also announced Don Augustine will continue with the program as running backs coach and special teams coordinator ... B.J. Lanier was chosen as inside linebackers coach and Erik Westberg was selected as defensive backs coach at Guilford. Lanier was a 2005 graduate at Randolph-Macon, where he was a two-year letter-winner. Westberg has been defensive backs coach and wide receivers coach at North Brunswick (North Carolina) High School.

Men's and women's golf ­ Jim Hamilton accepted additional responsibilities as head women's golf coach at Evansville. Hamilton, who has been in charge of the men's soccer team for three years, succeeds Mary Pat Boarman ... Alan Sue was promoted to head men's and women's coach at Cal State East Bay. For the past four years, Sue has been an assistant coach at the school ... Wisconsin-Eau Claire appointed Jim Maguire as head men's coach to replace Eric Anderson.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant ­ Doni Thompson, a former member of the United States National Women's Gymnastics Team, was appointed as an assistant at San Jose State.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Merrimack selected Mark Dennehy as head men's coach to replace Chris Serino. Dennehy has been associate head coach at Massachusetts since 2000.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant ­ Assumption tabbed Bob Harris as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ George Harris was announced as head men's coach at Wittenberg. Harris, who has been first assistant men's coach at Harvard for the past three years, succeeds Vinnie Lang ... John C. Johnson accepted responsibilities as head men's coach at St. John Fisher. Johnson, who replaces Craig Camp, has compiled a 357-149 record as head boys' varsity lacrosse coach at Canandaigua Academy for the past 26 years ... Dallas selected Andrea Duffy as head women's lacrosse coach and head women's soccer coach. Duffy has been an assistant at Siena ... Jessica Critchlow was hired as head women's coach at Union (New York). Since July 2002, Critchlow has been head women's coach at Utica ... Kim Eldridge resigned as head women's coach at Duquesne.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant ­ James Madison chose Matt Lawicki as an assistant women's coach.

Rowing ­ Mike Bouley resigned as head coach at Assumption.

Rowing assistant ­ Syracuse awarded assistant coaching duties to Sarah Cannon, who takes over for Craig Milburn. For the past three years, Cannon has been an assistant women's coach at Connecticut College.

Men's soccer ­ Illinois Wesleyan named Ryan Lakin as head men's soccer coach and assistant women's basketball coach. Lakin, who takes over for David Barrett as men's soccer coach, was in charge of the men's and women's soccer programs at Millikin from 1998 to 2002 ... Dwight Hornibrook accepted responsibilities as head coach at Cortland State. Hornibrook served as interim head coach during the 2004-05 academic year ... Matt Noyes was hired as head coach at Westfield State. For the past five years, Noyes has worked as head boys' soccer coach at Lenox (Massachusetts) High School ... Benedictine (Illinois) named Brenton Joseph as head men's soccer coach to replace Derek Niepomnik. Since 1997, Joseph has been head women's soccer coach at the school and formerly was in charge of both programs for four years. He will relinquish duties as head women's coach.

Men's soccer assistants ­ Lee Rogers and Dmytro Mazur were added as assistant coaches at New Paltz State ... Evansville named Ian Dunbar as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer ­ Cortland State appointed Heidi Woodcock as head coach. During the 2004-05 academic year, Woodcock was in charge of the program in an interim capacity ... Todd Ditmar, head coach at Bay Path, was selected as head coach at Westfield State. In 12 years at Bay Path, Ditmar led the school to three North Atlantic Conference championships ... Western Illinois chose Kevin Sherry as head coach. Sherry has been in charge of the program at Graceland University since 2001 and guided last year's squad to an 18-0-5 record and an appearance in the NAIA finals.

Women's soccer assistant ­ Lauren Pastore was hired as an assistant coach at New Paltz State.

Softball ­ Defiance selected Jodie Holava, formerly an assistant at Notre Dame (Maryland), as head coach ... Maggie Calcaterra was named as head softball coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis. For the past three years, Calcaterra has been head softball coach and head volleyball coach at Kaskaskia College ... Jennifer Herzig assumed responsibilities as head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro. Herzig, who succeeds Stephanie DeFeo, has been an assistant coach at Charlotte for the past two years ... Molloy hired Susan Cassidy as head coach ... Norfolk State appointed Kary Kankey as head coach. Kankey, who replaces the retired Chris Ake, has been in charge of the program at Defiance for the past five seasons ... Oberlin named Adrienne Davis as head coach. This past season, Davis served as an assistant coach at Beloit.

Softball assistants ­ New Paltz State added Bobbi Jo Gonnello as an assistant coach ... Michelle Martini accepted duties as an assistant coach at Molloy ... Central (Iowa) announced Stephanie Anderson as pitching coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Lock Haven hired Andrew Waeger as head women's coach. Waeger was head men's and women's coach at Slippery Rock ... Charles J. Lampasso was selected as director of aquatics and head men's and women's swimming coach at Baruch. Lampasso has been aquatic director at the Flushing (New York) YMCA and formerly was an assistant at Queens (New York) and St. John's (New York) and a volunteer assistant at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Dorsi Raynolds was tabbed as head men's and women's coach at Drew. Raynolds guided Buffalo to five Mid-Continent Conference championships in 13 years as head coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants ­ Danielle Linder was chosen as an assistant women's coach at New Paltz State ... Syracuse named Jeff Keck as an assistant. Keck, who replaces Chris Waters, formerly was an assistant with the program from 1982 until retiring in 2004 ... St. Mary's (Maryland) selected Joanna Carlsen as assistant men's and women's swimming coach and assistant aquatics director.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Jason Muhl accepted additional duties as head women's coach at Macalester to succeed Lynn Anderson. Muhl has been in charge of the men's program for the past year ... Pacific (Oregon) appointed Sandy Garry as head women's coach. For the past 10 seasons, Garry has served as head girls' coach at Westview (Oregon) High School ... Texas hired Patty Fendick-McCain as head women's coach to succeed Jeff Moore. Fendick-McCain, a two-time NCAA singles champion at Stanford and 1987 national player of the year, has been head women's coach at Washington for the past eight years ... Rob Castille was promoted to head men's coach at Duquesne. Castille, who takes over for Whitney Snyder, has been an assistant with the program since 2003.

Men's and women's tennis assistant ­ New Paltz State named Gina Ciccarelli as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Carthage's Steve Ray resigned as head men's track and field coach to become head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Jacksonville State.

Men's and women's track assistants ­ Eliese Zawacki was tabbed as an assistant coach at James Madison ... California (Pennsylvania) named Candy Young Sanders as an assistant men's and women's coach. Sanders, a former Olympian and world record holder, has coached at Fairleigh Dickinson, Seton Hall, Ohio State and Pittsburgh.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Cortland State appointed Pam Hoerup as head women's coach to replace Joan Sitterly. Hoerup was an assistant coach with the program ... Hunter appointed Greg DeMoustes as head women's coach. DeMoustes has been head men's and women's coach at Polytechnic (New York) ... Jennifer Olson was promoted to head women's coach at Benedictine (Illinois). Olson was an assistant volleyball and women's basketball coach at the school last season.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants ­ Tasha Goulet was hired as an assistant women's coach at Keene State. For the past two seasons, Goulet has been an assistant at Westfield State ... Alan Edwards was tabbed as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana. Edwards formerly was an assistant women's coach at Wyoming and formerly spent four years as head coach at Mercer ... Toledo announced Amanda Rogers as an assistant women's coach to succeed Regan Adams, who became head women's coach at West Georgia. Rogers has been head junior varsity coach at Gahanna Lincoln (Ohio) High School and, for the past two years, has coached a girls' club team.

Wrestling assistants ­ Chris Ortner was added as an assistant at Wartburg. Ortner most recently has been coaching at the high-school level ... Ryan Ludwig and Dionisios "Denny" Papadatos were added as assistant coaches at Northern Illinois.

Academic services ­ Virginia appointed Adrien Harraway as football academic coordinator and Elisabeth Crady as football study skills specialist.

Administrative ­ Challace McMillin was hired as sports psychologist at James Madison ... New Paltz State announced Steve Diklich as special assistant to the athletics director ... Evansville tabbed JaMarcus Hampton, Alexis Henderson, Matt Roberts and Heidi Seltzer as external relations assistants. Seltzer also will work in the sports information department ... Cathy Probst was named as assistant to the director of athletics at Albany (New York).

Athletic trainer ­ Westminster (Missouri) appointed Josh Thompson as head athletic trainer. Thompson, who has been head athletic trainer at Hendrix for the past three years, replaces Dave Hammons.

Assistant athletic trainers ­ New Paltz State hired Ryan Stevens as an assistant athletic trainer ... DePaul chose Jarett Mason as assistant director of sports medicine.

Assistant business manager ­ DePaul selected Steve Meints as assistant director of athletics business and financial affairs.

Compliance assistant ­ Chris Rogers was named as assistant director of compliance at Utah. Rogers has spent the past two years in the compliance office at Minnesota.

Development ­ Steve Walker was named as director of athletics development at Wartburg. Walker has been at the school for 10 years and most recently has served as annual fund director.

Development assistants ­ James Madison's Ehren Reagor resigned as a development assistant. The school also announced J Locklier as assistant director of athletics development.

Equipment manager ­ Scott Jean was named as head equipment manager at Elon to succeed Dwayne Turner. For the past year and a half, Turner has served as an equipment intern at Tulane.

Facilities ­ Jen Ward was hired as head athletics center monitor at Haverford.

Marketing and promotions ­ Saint Louis chose Declan O'Neill as director of marketing and corporate sales. O'Neill has been event manager with the school since December 2003.

Marketing and promotions assistants ­ Mark T. Gazdik was appointed as assistant director of athletics marketing at Delaware. Since 2002, Gazdik has been an athletics marketing assistant at Xavier ... Jason Coomer was hired as assistant director of athletics marketing and licensing. Sports information ­ Catholic named Mike Baur as sports information director. Most recently, Baur has served as an athletics media relations assistant at Winthrop ... John Jay hired Michael Damon as sports information director. Damon spent the 2004-05 men's and women's basketball seasons assisting in the school's sports information office and formerly was sports information director at Keuka ... Central Michigan elevated Donald Helinski to sports information director. Helinski was associate sports information director ... Erich Bacher was promoted to director of media relations at Denver. Bacher, who takes over for Marla Rodriguez, has been filling the post on an interim basis since February.

Sports information assistants ­ Nick Williams was tabbed as assistant sports information director at Defiance ... Central Michigan hired Scott Rex as an assistant sports information director. Rex, who replaces Don Helinski, spent one year as an intern and one year as assistant director of sports information at Lafayette ... Seton Hall elevated Jeff Mead to associate sports information director and appointed Vincent Novicki as sports information intern.

Strength and conditioning ­ Haverford announced Chris Osmond as strength and conditioning coach and fitness center director. Since 2003, Osmond has been director of speed, strength and acceleration at Jamestown College ... Corey Crane was hired as head strength and conditioning coach at Western Illinois. For the past four years, Crane has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Army.

Ticketing services ­ Utah named Zack Lassiter as director of ticket sales and tabbed Ryan O'Connor as group sales director. For the past four years, Lassiter has been an assistant ticket manager at LSU and North Carolina. O'Connor has been with the Salt Lake Stingers.

Conferences

Amy J. Frankenstein was selected as commissioner for the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. Frankenstein formerly was executive director of the United States Field Hockey Association and most recently has been an academic coach with the National Football Foundation ... The Big South promoted Dawn Turner to associate commissioner, Marcia Hollingsworth to director of operations, Chad Cook to assistant director of marketing and Lauren Cooper to coordinator of creative services. Turner has been an assistant commissioner with the league for the past three years and Hollingsworth was office manager for seven years. Most recently, Cook worked as assistant director of marketing and championships. Cooper has been assistant director of public relations since coming to the league office in January of last year ... Ron Bertovich resigned as commissioner at the Mid-Continent Conference. Bertovich has been in charge of the league since June 2003. Jack Mehl, director of athletics at Oakland, was named as interim commissioner ... The Missouri Valley Conference selected Mary Mulvenna as director of compliance and community relations and David Biancamano as assistant director of communications. The league also elevated Erica Fricke to director of communications and Matt Marchal to assistant commissioner for corporate relations ... Natasha Oakes was named as assistant to the commissioner for compliance and senior woman administrator and Matt Newbery was announced as assistant to the commissioner for media relations at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Oakes most recently concluded an internship with the conference office and Newbury has been director of sports information since 1994 ... Karl Mawhinney was appointed as assistant commissioner for marketing and sales at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For the past year and a half, Mawhinney has served as assistant director of corporate sponsorships for the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Associations

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced Matthew Sign as chief operating officer. Sign has formerly worked with Florida Citrus Sports, running major programming initiatives such as the Champs Sports Bowl and the Gridiron Classic College All-Star Game. The foundation also announced the retirement of Pat Harmon, historian for the NFF since in 1986 ... The Outback Bowl announced it has extended its agreement with the Big Ten Conference through January 1, 2010. As part of the four-year agreement, the bowl will receive the third pick from the Big Ten after the BCS and the Capital One Bowl ... The SBC Cotton Bowl Classic announced a new four-year agreement with the Big 12 Conference through January 1, 2010. As part of the agreement, the SBC Cotton Bowl will continue to have the first choice among bowl-eligible Big 12 teams after BCS selections ... The Black Coaches Association announced Eugene Marshall, deputy director of athletics at Army, as president. Marshall, who has been active with the group since 2001 and most recently has been first vice-president, will serve a two-year term in the position.

Corrections

A story in the July 18 issue of The NCAA News about how athletics departments deal with student-athlete deaths should have stated that former Florida State academic advisor and student-athlete Matt Schmauch died in the summer of 2003, not 2002 ... A story about catastrophic-injury insurance coverage for cheerleaders in the July 18 NCAA News should have included the following clarification from Varsity Spirit Corporation regarding that group's coverage: Varsity Spirit Corporation has a separate catastrophic-injury insurance program that covers cheerleading and spirit squads when they are traveling to and participating in camps and competitions it sponsors, including the Universal Cheerleaders Association, the Universal Dance Association, the National Cheerleaders Association and the United Spirit Association.

Notables

Tennessee junior Luke Hochevar was named as recipent of the Roger Clemens Award as the top pitcher in college baseball. Hochevar, the Southeastern Conference pitcher of the year, went 15-3 with a 2.26 earned-run average and established a school single-season record for strikeouts with 154.

DEATHS

Branden Able, a men's soccer student-athlete at Defiance, died in a motorcycle accident July 3. Able led the Yellow Jackets in goals in each of two seasons with the squad and earned recognition as the Heartland Conference freshman of the year in 2003.

Former Western Michigan men's golf coach William Yates died May 1. Yates was 64.

Taylor Greene, a soccer student-athlete at Florida Southern, died July 4 from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. Greene, 20, started all 15 games and contributed three goals and five assists at forward last season. As a freshman, she scored eight goals, tallied three assists and became the first player in team history to score two goals in her first collegiate game.

Notre Dame (Maryland) faculty athletics representative Stephen F. Beckenholdt died of pancreatic cancer July 10. He was 57. Beckenholdt, an associate professor of business since 1992 and an adjunct faculty member at the school since 1979, had been faculty athletics representative for 13 years.

Aaron O'Neal, a football student-athlete at Missouri, collapsed and died after a voluntary workout on July 12. O'Neal, 19, was a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Tigers.

Former Yale football student-athlete Ryan LoProto died recently. He was 24. LoProto, a starter at safety for the Bulldogs from 1998 to 2001, was an academic all-American and all-Ivy League selection.

Dick Drangmeister, former head men's basketball coach at Western New Mexico, died of cancer July 8. He was 70.

Former Nevada head track and field and cross country coach John Cook died July 8. He was 87. Cook, who was in charge of the Wolfpack programs from 1968 to 1989, led the school to seven West Coast Conference championships, three Big West Conference titles and the 1968 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship team title.
