Georgetown tabs Muir as athletics director

 Georgetown has named Bernard M. Muir as director of athletics.

Muir joins the Hoyas from Notre Dame, where he most recently has been deputy director of athletics for administration and facilities. He also served as senior associate athletics director for student welfare and development for the Irish. Before moving to Notre Dame, Muir spent eight years at the NCAA national office, where he held various positions, including director of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

A 1990 graduate of Brown, Muir was a four-year letter-winner and co-captain of the men's basketball squad there. He earned a master's degree in sports administration and facility management at Ohio.

TRANSACTIONS

Chief executive officers

Robert A. Brown was named as president at Boston U., effective September 1. Brown has been provost and professor of chemical engineering at MIT ... Redlands selected Stuart B. Dorsey, vice-president for academic affairs at Evansville, as president, effective in the 2005-06 academic year ... UC Irvine appointed Michael V. Drake as chancellor. Drake has been vice-president for health affairs for the University of California System ... Brian F. Linnane was chosen as president at Loyola (Maryland). Most recently, Linnane has been an assistant dean at the school and an associate professor of religious studies at Holy Cross.

Directors of athletics

Russell Sage appointed Danielle Drews as director of athletics and recreation. Drews, who replaces Candice Poiss, has been an assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head women's volleyball coach at Oswego State ... Jim Johnson was selected as athletics director at Texas A&M-Commerce. Most recently, Johnson has been associate athletics director for development and director of government relations at Central Missouri State ... Greg LaFleur was named as director of athletics at Southern to succeed Floyd Kerr. LaFleur has been athletics director at Chicago State ... Catholic chose Michael S. Allen as director of athletics, effective August 1. Allen has been associate athletics director for student services and director of the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence at Florida Atlantic ... Lawrence hired Robert L. Beeman Jr. as director of athletics to succeed Kim Tatro, who will continue with the school as head softball coach. Beeman has been director of athletics, head boys' basketball coach and assistant football coach at Charles Wright Academy in Washington since 2001 ... Hans J. Mueh was named as athletics director at Air Force. Mueh has filled the post on an interim basis for the past year.

Associate director of athletics

Lake Forest elevated Karen Hermann to associate athletics director. Hermann has been with the athletics department for 13 years, most recently as an assistant athletics director.

Assistant directors of athletics

Niagara chose Scott Koskoski as assistant athletics director for marketing. Koskoski most recently has been at Washington & Jefferson, where he has completed stints as director of student media, associate director of annual giving and associate athletics director for development ... Clyde Russell accepted additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director for marketing and external relations at Belmont. Russell will continue to serve as director of the Bruin Club ... UC Irvine elevated Dedra Butler to assistant athletics director for academic and student affairs and promoted Bobby Smitheran to assistant athletics director for compliance and student support. Butler has been academic and life skills coordinator at the school. Smitheran was in charge of compliance.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Rice awarded Wayne Graham a one-year contract extension that will keep the veteran head coach at the school for five more years. Graham has been in charge of the program for 14 years and guided the Owls to the national championship in 2003 ... Richard "Itch" Jones retired after 15 seasons as head coach at Illinois. Jones, who also spent 21 years as head coach at Southern Illinois, has a career record of 1,240-752-6 ... Dick Naylor, head baseball coach and administrative assistant for special projects at Hanover, retired ... Occidental elevated Elliott Strankman as head coach. Strankman was an assistant with the program last season... Nino Giarratano was awarded a long-term contract extension as head coach at San Francisco ... Justin Baughman was hired as head coach at Lewis & Clark ... Southern Arkansas promoted Allen Gum to head coach to succeed Mike Godfrey. For the past two years, Gum has worked as an assistant with the program ... Indiana (Pennsylvania) chose Jeff Ditch as head coach. Ditch, who succeeds Tom Kennedy, formerly has been an assistant coach at Penn State, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Young Harris College.

Baseball assistants ­ Centre tabbed Kyle Wynn as an assistant coach ... Steve Browning was elevated to a full-time assistant at Southern Arkansas.

Men's basketball ­ Georgia State awarded Michael Perry a three-year contract extension through 2008-09. Perry became an assistant coach with the program in 1997 and was elevated to head coach in January 2003 ... Alabama State promoted Lewis Jackson to head coach to succeed Rob Spivery, who became head coach at Southern. Jackson has been an assistant with the program since 2001 ... Jason Lowery was named as head coach at Pacific (Oregon). Lowery, who has been an assistant at Pomona-Pitzer for the past four seasons, takes over for Ken Schumann.

Men's basketball assistants ­ George Washington hired Phil Rowe as an assistant to replace Steve Pikiell. For the past six years, Rowe has served as head coach at New Hampshire. He formerly was head coach at Keene State and Plymouth State ... Dan Hipsher, formerly the head coach at Akron, was tabbed as an assistant at Arkansas ... Tyler Boswell was tabbed as an assistant coach at Shepherd. Boswell, who replaces Mark Laird, has been an assistant coach at the high-school level for the past two years ... Florida International added Bill Wuczynski as an assistant coach to replace Joe O'Brien.

Women's basketball ­ Tricia Cullop was awarded a contract extension through 2008-09 as head coach at Evansville. Cullop has been in charge of the Purple Aces program for five years ... Lynchburg chose Stephanie Tobey as head coach. For the past two seasons, Tobey has served as head coach at Lassell ... Jaime Hoffman was hired as head coach at Occidental to replace Kevin Hall ... Arcadia announced Shannon Howley as head women's basketball coach and assistant sports information director. Howley formerly was top assistant coach at Marymount (Virginia).

Women's basketball assistants ­ San Francisco added Theon Carrier and Marta Menuez as assistant coaches. Carrier has been an assistant at UCLA for the past four years. Menuez was a 2004 graduate of San Diego, where she was a first-team all-West Coast Conference selection in basketball ... Shane Brown was tabbed as an assistant at Colorado State. In five seasons as head coach at Houston Baptist, Brown led teams to a 166-24 record as well as five regular-season and five conference tournament championships ... Wright State chose Scott Reule as assistant coach. He previously was at Wilmington (Ohio) for four seasons.

Football assistants ­ Florida A&M released Gregory Black as assistant head coach and offensive coach and Mario Allen as running backs coach ... Ryan Hankard resigned as football defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and assistant men's lacrosse coach at Trinity (Connecticut). The school chose Jeff Devanney, secondary coach and special teams coach at the school for the past four seasons, as Hankard's successor at defensive coordinator and hired Lew Acquarulo as linebackers coach and special teams coach.

Men's and women's golf ­ San Francisco selected Josh Cupp as head women's coach and appointed Gary Nelson as head men's coach ... Leonard Biddle was elevated to head men's and women's coach at Southern Arkansas to succeed Dave Graham, who resigned. The women's program is scheduled to begin varsity competition this season ... Bradley selected Jeff Roche as head men's coach. For the past eight years, Roche has served as volunteer men's and women's assistant coach and since 2003 has worked as director of development in the college of business administration at Bradley ... Mic Potter was announced as head women's coach at Alabama. Potter has been in charge of the women's program at Furman for the past 23 years and also has served as director of intercollegiate golf for the past 10 years.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Carisa Zaban was chosen as head women's coach at Lake Forest ... Lake Superior State promoted Jim Roque to head coach. Roque, who succeeds Frank Anzalone, has been an assistant at the school since 2001 and formerly was an assistant at the school from 1998 to 1991 and also in 1994-95.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Peter Toner accepted responsibilities as head men's coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). For the past two years, Toner has worked as a graduate assistant men's coach at Springfield.

Rifle ­ Alaska Fairbanks hired Dan Jordan as head coach. Jordan replaces Glenn Dubis.

Men's soccer ­ Hartford appointed Dan Gaspar as head coach. Gaspar has been goalkeepers coach for FC Porto, an European soccer club, for the past season and formerly was associate head men's soccer coach at Central Connecticut State ... Chris Brown was appointed as head coach at Kenyon. For the past two seasons, Brown has worked as an assistant at Marquette.

Men's soccer assistants ­ Jeff "Ziggy" Korytoski was tabbed as an assistant coach at Wright State ... Campbell named Adam Laney as an assistant coach to replace Otis Burris. Laney has been an assistant coach at Wofford for the past three years.

Women's soccer ­ Sarah Dwyer-Shick was hired as head coach at Vassar. Dwyer-Shick has been coaching with the Stony Brook (New York) Soccer Club and formerly has been an assistant at Stony Brook and South Dakota State.

Women's soccer assistants ­ Evansville hired Krista McKendree as an assistant coach ... Belmont named Wendy Holleman as an assistant coach. Holleman worked as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State from 2001 to 2004 ... Wright State added MarioRincon as an assistant ... Jessica Chisley was chosen as an assistant at Centre.

Softball ­ Oakland's Mike Tomlinson resigned as head coach. The school selected Glenn MacDonald as interim head coach ... Lee Dobbins was appointed as head coach at Lander. Dobbins, who succeeds the retired Doug Spears, has been an assistant at Chattanooga for the past year ... Bradley hired Buddy Foster as head coach. For the past six seasons, Foster has worked as an assistant at Southern Illinois ... Anderson (South Carolina) selected Tommy Hewitt as head coach to replace Christine Yon Korver, who resigned after two seasons. Hewitt has been assistant softball coach and assistant football coach, head girls' golf coach and head junior varsity boys' and girls' soccer coach at Pendleton (South Carolina) High School for the past eight years ... Valdosta State selected Thomas Macera as head coach. Most recently, Macera led Lynn to the 2005 Division II national championship ... Amber Grahlman assumed responsibilities as head coach at Occidental ... Southern Arkansas' Jenifer Pagani resigned as head coach. Pagani led the program to a 56-45 mark in two years ... Lipscomb appointed Kristin Peck as head coach. Last season, Peck served as a graduate assistant softball coach and volleyball coach at the school.

Men's and women's swimming ­ Kathleen Cameron was named as head men's and women's coach at Bryant. Since 1997, Cameron has been head women's coach at Wagner ... Sion Brinn was selected as interim head coach at Wright State.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Dowling chose Cheryl Novins as head women's coach. Novins formerly was head men's tennis coach at the school from 1994 to 2002 ... Lester Sombito was hired as head men's and women's coach at Southwestern. Sombito replaces Chad Cage ... Jeff Moore resigned after 23 seasons as head women's coach at Texas. Moore guided the Longhorns to NCAA team championships in 1993 and 1995.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Baylor elevated Todd Harbour to head coach to succeed Clyde Hart, who will continue with the program as director of track and field ... Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price resigned as co-head coaches at Oklahoma. Lancaster and Price have been in charge of the program since 1997.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Dave Schmidlin was promoted to full-time head coach at Oakland. For the past two seasons, Schmidlin has filled the post on a part-time basis ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) appointed Kelli Myers as head women's coach. Myers has been head women's coach at Connecticut for seven seasons ... Trina Smith was named as head coach at Wright State ... Centre hired James Neyhouse as head coach. Since 2001, Neyhouse, who replaces Stephanie Dragan, has served as head coach at Wilmington (Ohio).

Men's and women's volleyball assistant ­ Josh Steinbach was appointed as an assistant coach at Wright State.

Staff

Administrative ­ Wright State announced Matt Liddy as assistant to the athletics director.

Academic services ­ Marsha Gonzaga was hired as academic and Life Skills coordinator at UC Irvine. For the past two years, Gonzaga has worked as a graduate assistant in the office of student-athlete development at Arizona State.

Sports information assistants ­ Syracuse added Matthew Lynch and Mark Vellek as athletics communications interns for the 2005-06 academic year.

Conferences

Daniel Fisher was named as assistant director for conference operations at the New England Small College Athletic Conference, effective August 1. Fisher, who takes over for Robb Modica, has been director of media realtions for the Atlantic Hockey Association and sports communication coordinator for the North Atlantic Conference for the past year.

Associations

Stephanie Baron was promoted to director of events at the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Baron has been with the WBCA since 2000 and most recently has been event manager.

DEATHS

Former Missouri-Kansas City men's basketball student-athlete Willie Jones died of a heart attack June 11. He was 47. Jones appeared in 87 games for the Kangaroos from 1976 to 1979.

Jim Hanneken, former cross country and track and field coach at New Haven, died June 11. Hanneken was in charge of the men's cross country and track and field programs at the school from 1983 to 1991 and also was head women's cross country and track and field coach from 1995 to 2003. The 1985 New England Collegiate Conference coach of the year was a two-sport letter-winner in cross country and track and field at Bowling Green.

Former Delaware men's lacrosse student-athlete Lee Levis died June 16. He was 53. Levis led Delaware to the 1971 Middle Atlantic Conference championship and was an all-conference selection in 1972 and 1973.

Former Redlands President Eugene E. Dawson Sr. died May 31. Dawson was 88.
