McElroy hired as AD at Georgia State

 Mary McElroy was hired as director of intercollegiate athletics at Georgia State.

McElroy comes to Georgia State from Georgia Tech, where most recently she has served as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. She also completed stints as director of compliance, associate athletics director and assistant director of athletics in six years at Tech. In addition, her committee service includes several Atlantic Coast Conference and Georgia Tech groups, and she recently was appointed to the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee.

Before arriving at Georgia Tech, McElroy spent four years at the U.S. Naval Academy as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for compliance for 29 varsity sports. She also served one year as the academy's director of alumni services.

McElroy earned a bachelor of science degree in management at Navy in 1987 and then served as a supply officer in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years, attaining the rank of captain. She completed a master of science degree in management at Georgia Tech in 2000 and completed the Sports Management Institute in January 2004.

UC Irvine named Michael V. Drake as chancellor. Drake, who succeeds Ralph J. Cicerone, has been University of California vice-president for health affairs since March 2000 ... John U. Trefny announced plans to retire as president at Colorado School of Mines, effective July 31, 2006 ... Southern Illinois President James E. Walker announced his retirement, effective June 2006 ... Wisconsin-Whitewater selected Martha D. Saunders as chancellor. Saunders has been vice-president for academic affairs at Columbus State ... Betsy Fleming was appointed as president at Converse, effective in October. Fleming has been executive director of Gibbes Museum of Art in South Carolina ... Fort Valley State named William H. Harris as interim president. Harris formerly was president at Alabama State.

Directors of athletics

Macalester hired Travis Feezell as director of athletics to replace Irv Cross. Feezell, a member of the NCAA Division III Management Council, has served as athletics director at Whitman for the past five years ... Cal Lutheran selected Dan Kuntz as director of athletics. Kuntz, who has been interim athletics director since August 2004, will continue to serve as head men's soccer coach, but will relinquish responsibilities as head women's soccer coach at the school ... W. Curtis Williams was appointed as director of athletics at Stillman. Most recently, Williams has worked as chair of the department of health, physical education and recreation at Arkansas-Pine Bluff ... Joe Taylor was named as interim athletics director at Hampton. Taylor, who has guided the football squad for the past 13 years, has been an assistant athletics director since January ... Plattsburgh State chose Bruce Delventhal as athletics director. Since 1988, Delventhal, who succeeds Roy Patton and interim athletics director Christopher Waterbury, has been secretary and treasurer for the American Hockey Coaches Association ... Robert Krimmel was appointed as athletics director at St. Francis (Pennsylvania). Krimmel, who has been an assistant athletics director at Penn State for the past seven years, takes over for Jeff Eisen ... Kirby Hocutt was named as athletics director at Ohio to replace Tom Boeh. Hocutt most recently has been an associate athletics director at Oklahoma ... San Diego State hired Jeff Schemmel as athletics director. Schemmel has been an associate commissioner with Conference USA.

Senior woman administrators

Northern Colorado announced Sherri Frye as senior woman administrator and senior associate athletics director. For the past four years, Frye has worked as senior associate athletics director-internal and senior woman administrator at Portland State ... Keisha Campbell was promoted to senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for administration at Hampton.

UC Riverside elevated Michael Scarano to associate athletics director.

Assistant directors of athletics

Wheaton (Massachusetts) promoted Scott Dietz to assistant athletics director for media relations. Since July 2000, Dietz has worked as sports information director at the school ... Michelle Meadows was appointed as assistant athletics director for compliance at Longwood. Meadows has been assistant compliance director at Virginia Commonwealth since 2003 ... Portia Lowe accepted responsibilities as assistant athletics director at Lake Forest. Lowe has been compliance officer and interim assistant athletics director at Vassar for the past year ... Northern Iowa's Nancy Justis announced plans to retire as< assistant athletics director for media relations, effective January 2, 2006. Justis has been with the school since 1974 and served as sports information director from 1976 until being elevated to assistant athletics director last year ... Matt Johnson was selected as assistant athletics director at American International to replace Richard Lenfest. Since July 2004, Johnson has worked as external affairs coordinator for athletics at Massachusetts-Lowell.

Baseball ­ Mike McGuire resigned as head coach at Lander. McGuire led the program to a 90-80 record in three years ... Rowan hired Juan Ranero as head coach to replace John Cole, who became head coach at Pennsylvania. Ranero formerly was in charge of the program at the school from 1994 to 1998 and has spent the past four years as head coach at Barry ... Paul Kostacopoulos was chosen as head coach at Navy. For the past nine years, Kostacopoulos has been head coach at Maine ... Tulane awarded head coach Rick Jones a one-year contract extension through 2012. Jones has guided the Green Wave to a 523-237-1 record in 12 seasons ... Farmingdale State hired Keith Osik, former MLB player with the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers, as head coach. Osik takes over for Ken Rocco.

Baseball assistant ­ Ben Blake was promoted to associate head coach at Simpson. Blake has been an assistant with the program since 2004.

Men's basketball ­ Florida Tech selected Billy Mims as head coach. Mims, who replaces Kris Olson, has been head coach at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin ... Nebraska-Omaha's Kevin McKenna resigned after four seasons as head coach to replace Greg Grensing as an assistant coach at Creighton. Nebraska-Omaha elevated assistant Derrin Hansen to interim head coach ... Rider chose Tommy Dempsey as interim head coach for the 2005-06 season. Dempsey, an assistant with the program for the past two years, succeeds Don Harnum, who was named as interim successor to retiring director of athletics Curt Blake.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Jeff Wilson was chosen as coordinator of basketball operations at Pennsylvania ... Brandeis named Colin Tabb as an assistant coach. Tabb was an assistant at Rhode Island College in 2003-04 and has played professionally in Germany and Ireland ... South Carolina-Aiken selected Nate Davis as an assistant. Davis formerly was an assistant at Mansfield ... BYU elevated Walter Roese to assistant coach and tabbed Terry Nashif as director of basketball operations. Roese was director of basketball operations and takes over for Steve Cleveland. Most recently, Nashif completed a four-year career as a member of the school's men's basketball squad ... Suni K. Blackwell was chosen as an assistant men's basketball coach and coordinator of special events at Drew. Blackwell formerly was an assistant coach at West Chester ... North Dakota State announced David Richman as an assistant coach. Richman has been a graduate assistant coach with the school since 2003-04 ... Jay Welborn was tabbed as an assistant coach at Huntingdon. Welborn was director of basketball operations at Samford.

Women's basketball ­ Maureen Pine resigned as head coach at Trinity (Connecticut). Pine led the program to a 250-167 record in 18 seasons. The school hired Wendy Davis, head coach at Western New England for the past six years, as Pine's successor ... Anderson (South Carolina) chose Jeff Dow as head coach ... Ohio State awarded head coach Jim Foster a seven-year contract. Foster has guided the Buckeyes to a 73-25 record in three years ... Cynthia Cooper, two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player with the Houston Comets and former head coach of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, was hired as head coach at Prairie View A&M.

Women's basketball assistants ­ Everett "E.J." Jackson was selected as an assistant at West Virginia. For the past three seasons, Jackson, who replaces Cindy Martin, has worked as an assistant coach at South Alabama ... Simpson added Jennifer Jepson as an assistant women's basketball coach and an assistant volleyball coach ... Jackie Cullen was tabbed as an assistant coach at Mount St. Vincent ... Tulsa chose LaTricia Gunnells as an assistant coach. For the past two seasons, Gunnells has been an assistant at Central Florida and formerly was an assistant at Lehman ... Stephany Raines resigned as an assistant coach at Georgia State to become head coach at Savannah College of Art and Design. Raines was an assistant at Georgia State from 1994 to 1996 and from 1997 to 2005.

Men's and women's fencing ­ Vassar hired Bruce Gillman as head men's and women's coach. Gillman has been an assistant coach at Sacred Heart and head boys' coach at Garden City (New York) High School.

Field hockey ­ Wilkes named Sara Fuller< as head coach. Fuller, who replaces Todd Broxmeyer, has been head coach at Scranton for the past season.

Football assistants ­ Adam Cushing was added as tight ends coach and halfbacks coach at Northwestern. Cushing, who takes over for Jack Glowik, has been an assistant coach at La Verne for the past two years ... West Texas A&M named Mike Salinas as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Cody Farrell as defensive backs coach, Anton Paige as wide receivers coach, Sione Ohaufi as assistant offensive line coach and Richard Whitaker as running backs coach. Salinas, who replaces Rick Haasl, has been defensive backs coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville since 2001, and Farrell has been an assistant coach at Abilene Christian for the past five seasons. Paige, who succeeds Alexander Wright, is a wide receiver and linebacker, and Ohaufi is an offensive and defensive lineman for the Amarillo Dusters of the Arena Football League 2 ... Casey Carlo was selected as defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach at Upper Iowa. Carlo formerly was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Northern Iowa and formerly has coached at the high-school level ... Southern Arkansas added Trey LaValle as offensive line coach ... Mike Fassel was chosen as director of football operations at Princeton. Fassel replaces Nolan Jones ... Guilford tabbed Pat Randolph as offensive coordinator and Dearrion Snead as defensive coordinator. Randolph has been an assistant coach at Harriton (Pennsylvania) High School and formerly has been an assistant at Ball State, Utah State and Indiana (Pennsylvania). Snead, formerly an assistant at Texas Southern and Virginia State, has been an assistant coach at Arizona Western Junior College for the past two seasons ... Jim Louis was chosen as an assistant coach at Wartburg. For the past five seasons, Louis has served as defensive line coach, linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator at Minot State.

Men's and women's golf ­ Pat Cappola was appointed as head men's coach. Cappola succeeds Jay Lally.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant ­ Penn State chose Kevin Tan as an assistant coach. Tan, a six-time all-American and a member of the school's 2004 national championship men's squad, was an undergraduate coach this past season.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Peter Toner was hired as head men's coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). Toner has been a graduate assistant men's coach at Springfield for two years ... Mary Jacobs was promoted to head women's coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). Jacobs succeeds Rebecca Begley, who will continue as head field hockey coach at the school. Jacobs has been assistant women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach for the past three years.

Rowing ­ Virginia chose Steve Pritzker as an assistant coach. Pritzker was a volunteer assistant coach with the program in 2004 and served as an interim assistant coach this spring.

Men's soccer ­ Steve Moore was hired as head men's and women's soccer coach at Concordia (Illinois). For the past three years, Moore has worked as an assistant coach at Greenville ... Florida Southern tabbed Hugh Seyfarth as head coach, effective August 1. Seyfarth, who takes over for Kris Pahl, has been an assistant women's soccer coach at Miami (Ohio) for the past seven seasons ... Wingate elevated Gary Hamill to director of soccer. Hamill will continue as head men's soccer coach and associate director of athletics.

Women's soccer ­ Nancie Moskowitz was elevated to head coach at Cal Lutheran to succeed Dan Kuntz, who became athletics director at the school. Moskowitz has been an assistant coach for the past five years ... Montclair State chose Eileen Blair as full-time head coach. Blair has been in charge of the program on a part-time basis for the past seven seasons ... Wingate promoted Gary Curneen to head women's soccer coach. For the past two seasons, Curneen, who succeeds Andy Thompson, has been an assistant men's soccer coach at the school.

Softball ­ Craig Walston resigned after nine seasons as head coach at Webster ... Philadelphia U. appointed John Kelly as head coach. Kelly, who worked as head coach at Haverford from 1997 to 2004, succeeds the retired Frank Fiorino.

Softball assistants ­ Pennsylvania tabbed Alexis Alcantara as an assistant coach ... Stayc Preator was added as pitching coach at Evansville. Most recently, Preator has coached at Middle Tennessee.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Trinity (Texas) selected Julie Porter as director of aquatics.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Webster hired Mike Siener as head men's and women's coach. For the past five seasons, Siener has served as an assistant men's basketball coach at the school ... Florida Tech hired Bill Macom as director of tennis and head men's and women's coach. Macom, a tennis professional with the Tennis Connection and assistant head professional and junior tennis coordinator with Northdale Golf and Tennis Club in Florida, replaces Marla Reid ... Fred Drilling retired as head women's tennis coach at Florida Gulf Coast. The school awarded additional responsibilities to head men's tennis coach, J. Webb Horton, as an interim successor for Drilling during the 2005-06 season ... Anderson (South Carolina) selected Rodrigo da Silva as head men's and women's coach ... Amy Rowland accepted additional responsibilities as head men's tennis coach at John Jay. Rowland will continue as head women's tennis coach at the school ... Milwaukee School of Engineering appointed Tony Canedo as head men's and women's coach to replace Larry Gagnon ... Long Island's Wayne Martin resigned after seven years as head women's coach ... Kavan Hahn was hired as head men's and women's coach at North Carolina-Asheville. Hahn, most recently an assistant coach at Wofford, replaces Chase Hodge, who was selected as head men's coach at Drake.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Oklahoma hired Martin Smith as head track and cross country coach. Smith, who resigned in March as director of men's and women's track and field and cross country at Oregon, guided Wisconsin to NCAA championships in men's cross country in 1985 and 1988 and led Virginia's women's cross country team to national titles in 1981 and 1982.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Lander's Angela McGuire resigned after two years as head women's coach ... Chris Johnson was promoted to head women's coach at Seattle Pacific. Johnson, who succeeds Kellie Ryan, was top assistant coach during the past season ... Annie Glieber was hired as head volleyball coach and recreation director at Carroll. For the past two years, Glieber has been a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Central Missouri State ... Lee Anderson was tabbed as head coach at Glenville State. Anderson, who succeeds Gerry Szabo, has been top assistant at Ferris State for the past two seasons.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant ­ Florida Gulf Coast added Carrie Lundy as an assistant. Lundy formerly was an assistant coach at Truman.

Staff

Assistant athletic trainer ­ Southern Arkansas added Ginger LaValle as assistant athletic trainer and Athletic Training Education Program instructor. LaValle has been a teacher and assistant softball coach at the junior high level.

Compliance ­ Erin Kido was hired as compliance coordinator at Oklahoma. Kido has been a graduate assistant in compliance at Ohio State for the past two years.

Recreation ­ Wheaton (Massachusetts) elevated Dave Begley to director of intramurals, recreation and club sports. Since August 2001, Begley has been part-time coordinator of intramural and club sports at the school.

Sports information ­ Zachary M. Pretzer was selected as sports information director and compliance director at Bryn Mawr. Pretzer has been a sports management assistant at Tennessee.

Sports information assistants ­ Tim Flynn assumed duties as an athletics communications assistant at Pennsylvania ... UMBC named Jessica Bernheim as assistant director of athletics communications ... Matt Horne resigned after four years as assistant sports information director Tusculum to become assistant sports information director at Georgia Southern ... Pittsburg State hired Ian Marks as assistant sports information director. Marks was a recent graduate of Wisconsin-Superior, where he was a member of the men's soccer team and worked as a student assistant in the school's sports information office.

Strength and conditioning ­ Jason W. "Jay" Beaulieu was hired as head strength and conditioning coach at Delaware to replace Russell Barbarino. Beaulieu has been director of athlete development and director of sports performance at Velocity Sports Performance in Virginia and Maryland for the past two years ... Northern Iowa appointed Jed C. Smith as strength and conditioning coach. Smith, who succeeds Michael Daugherty, formerly was the explosive strength coach for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings and has been exercise and sports science and head strength coach at Dakota County Technical College since 2002.

Conferences

The Lone Star Conference elected Jesse Rogers, president at Midwestern State, as chair, John Hays, president at Southwestern Oklahoma State, as vice-chair, James Hindman, president at Angelo State, as second vice-chair and Cindy Ross, president at Cameron, as third vice-chair, effective for the 2005-06 academic year ... Bruce Ludlow was promoted to associate commissioner for communications and Jack Key was elevated to associate commissioner and chief financial officer at the Southland Conference. Ludlow has been with the league since 1998 and has been assistant commissioner for media relations for the past five years. Key, who has been assistant commissioner and chief financial officer, joined the conference as director of business operations in 2003 ... Tracy King was named as commissioner with the Skyline Conference. King has been assistant athletics director and sports information director at Stevens Institute of Technology for the past three years and also has served as publicity director for the Skyline during the past year ... Mid-American Conference tabbed Dave Magarity as assistant commissioner and director of men's basketball operations. Magarity, formerly head men's basketball at Marist, was assistant commissioner and director of men's basketball operations at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference ... Katie Willett was chosen as an assistant commissioner at the Great Lakes Valley Conference, replacing Camie Bechtold. Willett, formerly an intern at the NCAA national office, was a 2002 NCAA Woman of the Year state winner representing Rhode Island ... Rachelle Held was hired as assistant commissioner for compliance at the Northeast Conference. Held was an administrative fellow with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference ... The Missouri Valley Conference announced the following as officers for the 2005-06 academic year: Stephen Jennings, president at Evansville, chair of the presidents' council; James MacLeod, faculty athletics representative at Evansville, president of the conference; Paul Kowalczyk, athletics director at Southern Illinois, league vice-president, director of athletics and chair of the Athletics Administrators Committee.

Associations

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) announced the following as officers for the 2005-06 year: Leslie Wurzberger, assistant athletics director at Washington, president; Trip Durham, associate athletics director at Elon, first vice-president; Mary Pink, director of marketing at Iowa State, second vice-president; and Dennis Kalina, associate athletics director for external affairs at Bradley, third vice-president. Jeff Bain, director of athletics at Martin Methodist, and Robert Hartman, chief marketing officer at California, were named to the NACMA Board of Directors.

Correction

Wisconsin-Stevens Point should have been credited with two Division III Men's Basketball Championship titles instead of one in the championship year in review Centerpiece in the July 4 NCAA News.

Notables

Notre Dame President Emeritus Theodore Hesburgh was named as recipient of the 2005 Dick Enberg Award, presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The honor recognizes an individual whose actions and commitment have furthered the meaning and reach of the Academic All-America Teams Program and/or the student-athlete while promoting the values of education and academics. Hesburgh, who stepped down as president at Notre Dame in 1987, currently serves as co-chair of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and was the recipient of the 2004 NCAA Gerald Ford Award.

DEATHS

Steve Reich, former baseball student-athlete at Army, died recently in military action in Afghanistan. He was 34. Reich, a member of the 1993 USA Baseball National Team, was one of eight Navy Seals and eight members of the Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment aboard a Chinook helicopter that crashed. He was on his fourth tour of duty and was a company commander in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

Former Campbell men's soccer coach James "Catfish" Cole died June 24. He was 74. Cole established the soccer program at Campbell 42 years ago and served as head coach for 13 seasons.
