New Hampshire names basketball coach

 New Hampshire appointed Bill Herrion as head men's basketball coach. Herrion replaces Phil Rowe, who resigned.

Most recently, Herrion was associate head coach at Arkansas. Before joinung the Razorbacks, he was in charge of the program at East Carolina from 1999 to 2005. Herrion also served as head coach at Drexel, where he guided the Dragons to a 167-71 record during a tenure that spanned from 1991 to 1999 and featured three NCAA tournament appearances and five consecutive 20-win seasons. In addition, Herrion formerly was an assistant coach at Boston U. and George Washington.

Herrion earned a bachelor of arts degree in history at Merrimack in 1981.

Chief executive officers

Gardner-Webb named A. Frank Bonner as president, effective July 1. Bonner has been provost and senior vice-president at the school ... Mauri A. Ditzler was selected as president at Monmouth (Illinois), effective July 1. Most recently, Ditzler has worked as dean at Wabash ... Drury President John E. Moore Jr. retired. The school announced John D. Sellars, senior vice-president for institutional advancement at Syracuse, as Moore's successor, effective July 1.

Directors of athletics

Appalachian State appointed Charles Cobb as athletics director, effective July 1. Cobb has been senior associate athletics director for external affairs at North Carolina State ... Richard Lenfest was appointed as director of athletics at Westfield State, effective June 20. Lenfest has been an assistant athletics director, assistant professor of sports management and assistant women's basketball coach at American International ... TCU hired Daniel B. Morrison Jr., commissioner of the Southern Conference, as director of athletics to replace Eric Hyman. Morrison has been in charge of the league since 2001 ... Piedmont announced John Dzik as director of athletics. Dzik has been athletics director at Cabrini since 1986 ... Brian Colleary resigned as athletics director at Duquesne. The school announced Paul Hightower, assistant athletics director for business, as Colleary's interim successor ... Thomas Boeh was named as director of athletics at Fresno State, effective July 1. Boeh, who replaces Scott Johnson, has been athletics director at Ohio.

Senior woman administrator

Nicole Smith was named as senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach at Arkansas-Monticello.

Associate directors of athletics

Camille Filardo was awarded responsibilities as associate athletics director at Sonoma State. Filardo has been senior woman administrator and compliance coordinator at the school since 2001 ... Bruce Ivory resigned as associate athletics director at Cincinnati.

Assistant director of athletics

Wisconsin elevated Kevin Kleunder to assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. Kleunder has been director of marketing for athletics.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Bloomsburg tabbed Mike Collins as head coach. Collins has spent the past four seasons as top assistant coach at Binghamton ... Bill Fagler was chosen as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to succeed Mark Mancuso. Fagler most recently resigned after 22 years as head coach at Northeast (Nebraska) High School ... Mark Johnson was released as head coach at Texas A&M. Johnson joined the program in 1983 and spent two years as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach ... Willie Stewart was elevated to head coach at North Carolina-Asheville, effective July 1. Stewart most recently has been interim head coach.

Baseball assistant ­ North Carolina-Asheville promoted Tim Perry to assistant coach. For the past year, Perry has fulfilled responsibilities as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator on an interim basis.

Men's basketball ­ Robert Davis was hired as head coach at LeTourneau. For the past three seasons, Davis has worked as associate coach at Liberty ... Prairie View A&M announced Darrell Hawkins as interim head coach to replace Jerome Francis Jr. Hawkins has been an assistant with the program for three seasons ... Kentucky Wesleyan tabbed Todd Lee as head coach. Lee has been with UC Irvine for eight seasons and has been associate head coach since 2001 ... Jeff Bzdelik was hired as head coach at Air Force to replace Chris Mooney. Bzdelik most recently was released as head coach of the NBA's Denver Nuggets.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Tae Norwood accepted duties as an assistant at Bloomsburg. Norwood most recently has been an assistant coach, intramural director and assistant resident director at Milligan College ... Shepherd named James Willen as an assistant coach. Willen, who succeeds Andy Burkholder, has been an assistant at Washington (Maryland) for the past three years ... Washington (Maryland) announced Grant Leonard as an assistant coach.

Women's basketball ­ Ben Conrad was named as head coach at Upper Iowa. For the past three seasons, Conrad has worked as head coach at Des Moines Area (Iowa) Community College ... Lander appointed Kevin Pederson as head coach. Pederson compiled an 88-31 record as head coach at Anderson (South Carolina) for the past three and a half seasons ... Charlene Thomas-Swinson was hired as head coach at Tulsa to replace Kathy McConnell-Miller. For the past three years, Thomas-Swinson has served as an assistant at Florida ... Indiana (Pennsylvania) appointed Cindy Martin as head coach. Martin, top assistant and recruiting coordinator at West Virginia for the past four years, replaces Justin English ... Buffalo chose Linda Hill-MacDonald as head coach. Hill-MacDonald, who replaces Cheryl Dozier, has been an assistant coach at South Carolina and formerly was head coach at Temple and Minnesota ... LeTourneau selected Tina Robbins as head coach. Robbins has coached at the high-school level.

Women's basketball assistants ­ Mike Brown was chosen as an assistant coach at Upper Iowa. Brown has been head women's coach at Iowa Central Community College since 1999 ... Colorado State added Kristin Becker, Heath Alexander and Randie Wirt as assistants. Becker was an assistant coach at Kansas State from 1998 to 2001 and Alexander was an assistant at Oregon State. Wirt, a 2004 graduate of Colorado and a member of the women's basketball team, most recently played in Finland ... Philadelphia U. announced Melissa Kelly as an assistant coach. Last season, Kelly was an assistant at Chestnut Hill ... James Madison tabbed Jackie Smith as an assistant coach. Smith has been an assistant coach at Bucknell for the past two seasons ... Texas Tech's Linden Weese resigned ... Angie Potthoff was tabbed as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. Potthoff, who takes over for Carol Owens, has been head girls' basketball coach at Beaver Area (Pennsylvania) High School for the past year.

Cheerleading ­ Tora Sanford was selected as head dance and cheerleading coach at Transylvania.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Piedmont chose Jamie Childs as head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant women's basketball coach. For the past two seasons, Childs has been head women's basketball coach at Middle Georgia ... North Carolina-Asheville promoted Brad DeWeese to head men's cross country and track and field coach. DeWeese, an assistant coach with the program for the past four years, takes over for Dean Duncan, who will continue as head women's cross country and track and field coach. Duncan has been head men's and women's coach since 2001.

Men's and women's cross country assistant ­ Crystal Goure was appointed as an assistant women's coach at North Carolina-Asheville. Goure has been an assistant men's and women's coach at the school for the past year.

Field hockey assistants ­ Washington (Maryland) named Laura Scimeca as an assistant coach ... Kristen Manson resigned as an assistant at James Madison ... Carly Sweeney was selected as an assistant coach at Keene State.

Football ­ Arkansas-Monticello chose Gwaine Mathews as head coach. Mathews succeeds Gregg Ricono, who resigned to become offensive coordinator at Arkansas Tech.

Football assistants ­ Donald Dykes, Tyler Peterson, Steve Gleason and Shannon Williams were added as assistant coaches at Arkansas-Monticello ... Westminster (Missouri) tabbed Troy Tomlin as an assistant coach, effective August 1, to succeed Scott Pingel. Tomlin was head coach of the Braunschweig Lions of the German Football League from 2001 to 2004.

Men's and women's golf ­ Wyoming's Jill Rettinger resigned after eight seasons as head women's coach.

Men's and women's golf assistant ­ Carol Green was appointed as an assistant coach at James Madison. Green was a 2005 graduate of the school, where she was a four-year letter-winner on the golf squad and a two-time Colonial Athletic Association player of the year.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Niagara chose Heather Reinke as interim head women's coach for the 2005-06 season while head coach Margot Page serves as an assistant coach for the Canadian National Team.

Men's soccer ­ Lipscomb hired Charles Morrow as head coach. Morrow formerly was an assistant coach at the school from 1996 to 1997 and most recently has been head coach at Belmont Abbey ... Oswego State hired Robert Friske as head coach to succeed Ken Peterson. For the past two seasons, Friske has been in charge of the program at Keuka.

Women's soccer ­ Steve O'Neal was tabbed as head coach at Caldwell ... Maryland named Brian Pensky as head coach to take over for Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. Pensky has served as an assistant men's coach at the school for the past three seasons.

Women's soccer assistants ­ Siri Mullinix was appointed as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Greensboro. Mullinix, who replaces Susie Parsons, was a goalkeeper with the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team that won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics ... Andrea Alfiler was selected as an assistant coach at Tulane. Alfiler, who was an assistant coach at San Diego State last season, replaces Lynsey McLean.

Softball ­ Illinois Wesleyan tabbed Lloyd Hulit as head coach to replace Beth Williams. Hulit has been an assistant coach and a head coach at the high-school level ... Venus Taylor resigned as head coach at Bradley to become head coach at Daytona Beach Community College.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Boston U. chose Bill Smyth as head men's and women's coach. For the past eight years, Smyth has been an assistant at Virginia.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Dave Ramos was appointed as head men's tennis coach at Ferris State to succeed Kevin Brandalik, who resigned. Ramos has been the head women's tennis coach at the school for the past five years ... Arizona elevated Tad Berkowitz to head men's coach to replace the retired Bill Wright. Berkowitz has been an assistant coach for the Wildcats for the past two seasons.

Men's and women's tennis assistant ­ Washington (Maryland) tabbed Conor Smith as an assistant women's coach. Smith was an assistant men's coach at Mary Washington during the 2004-05 season.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Clarke named Michael Warta as head men's and women's coach. For the past two years, Warta has worked as coordinator of recruiting for men's and women's cross country and track, preseason strength and conditioning coach and assistant men's and women's track and field coach at Lynchburg.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Chris Miron was selected as head men's and women's coach at Clarke. Most recently, Miron has served as an assistant coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Wrestling ­ Dan Wirnsberger was named as head coach at Bucknell. The program is scheduled to return to varsity status this fall. Wirnsberger has been head coach at Bloomsburg for the past three seasons.

Staff

Sports information assistant ­ Ryan Griswold was hired as assistant sports information director at Washington (Maryland). Most recently, Griswold has worked as a sports information intern at Rhode Island College.

Correction

The Division II notes section of the May 9 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly described a new facility at Wayne State University (Michigan). The dedication was for a new grandstand and pressbox facility for softball.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded the Hofstra and Seton Hall men's soccer teams for a bench-clearing scuffle that broke out toward the end of a first-round match in the 2004 championship. The committee voted to issue public reprimands of both institutions for having personnel leave the bench area. The committee also issued a one-game NCAA tournament game suspension for Seton Hall student-athlete Victor Kotynski and to withhold per diem reimbursement of $105 to Seton Hall for Kotynski and one other unidentified student-athlete who was involved.

Notables

Cal State Bakersfield's April Burton and Chris Figures were named as the U.S. Track and Field Association's 2005 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of Year. Burton was a four-time California Collegiate Athletic Association champion in the shot put and is a qualifer for the 2005 U.S. Track and Field Championships in the hammer. Figures, also a qualifer for this year's U.S. Track and Field Championships, was the conference male track and field athlete of the year.

DEATHS

Oklahoma State football student-athlete Vernon Grant died in a car accident May 23. He was 22. A three-year starter at safety, Grant, an engineering major, started all 12 games for the Cowboys last season and tallied 67 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
