Influential former Michigan AD dies at 87

Don Canham, a Michigan high jumper whose 1940 NCAA victory in that event was the prelude to a 45-year involvement with the school that saw him became one of the most influential athletics directors in intercollegiate athletics, died May 3 at age 87.

Canham, who returned to his alma mater in 1946 as an assistant track coach after serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, later served for 20 years as head track coach, then replaced Fritz Crisler as athletics director in 1968.

During the next 20 years, he won renown for his techniques for the marketing and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. Among his innovations were the first major direct mail and advertising program to sell football and other sports' tickets. His efforts were a major factor in making the Wolverine football program the nation's leader in attendance in 30 of the past 31 years, averaging more than 100,000 fans per game.

He also was an important voice in the governance of athletics in the Big 10 Conference and the NCAA, serving on the Association's Television Committee during the 1970s. Shortly before becoming athletics director, he served as meet director for the first NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Detroit, and succeeded in returning revenue in the meet's second and third years to competing schools.

Later in his career, Canham advised numerous intercollegiate athletics programs around the country, and was honored upon his retirement in 1988 with induction into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics' hall of fame.

Among other honors, his alma mater named its new natatorium for Canham shortly after his retirement.

Since retirement, Canham had dedicated himself to a family-owned business, School-Tech Inc., specializing in marketing instructional films and recreational, educational and athletics equipment.

The University of Michigan Hospital attributed his death to extensive internal bleeding resulting from an abdonimal aortic aneurysm.
