Beverly named athletics director at Vassar

 Vassar has promoted Sharon Manning Beverly to director of athletics and physical education. Beverly, who succeeds Andy Jennings, has been filling the position on an interim basis since July 2004.

Beverly has been associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Vassar since 2002. A member of the NCAA Division III Nominating Committee, she came to Vassar after completing a four-year tenure as head women's basketball coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology. She spent 11 years as head women's basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson, where she guided teams to Northeast Conference championships in 1990 and 1992 and a regular-season title in 1993. In addition, Beverly was head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics director at Queens (New York) for six years.

Beverly was a member of Queensborough Community College women's basketball squad and competed at Queens (New York). Beverly also has played professionally in Europe.

Directors of athletics

Macalester's Irv Cross stepped down as director of athletics, but will continue with the school as football defensive coordinator and as a fund-raising consultant to the university's president. Cross has been with the school since June 1999 ... Ron Prettyman was hired as athletics director at Indiana State, effective July 1, to succeed the retiring Andrea Myers. Prettyman has been athletics director at Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Carnegie Mellon announced Susan Bassett as director of athletics and physical education, effective July 1. Bassett, who has been director of athletics at William Smith since 1995, replaces the retired John Harvey and interim athletics director David Belowich ... Laurie Turner was appointed as director of athletics at Pacific Lutheran, effective July 1, worked as senior associate athletics director at UC San Diego. She recently has served as a member of the Division II Management Council ... Colorado announced Mike Bohn as athletics director. Bohn, who has been athletics director at San Diego State since 2003, takes over for Dick Tharp. Steve Becvar, senior associate athletics director at San Diego State, was named as interim athletics director there.

Assistant director of athletics

Chris Wlosinski was elevated to assistant director of athletics for student services and compliance at Cornell. Wlosinski has been director of student-athlete services.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Philadelphia U. elevated Mark Heineman to head coach, effective at the end of the 2005 season. Heineman, who is in his second season as an assistant with the program, succeeds the retiring Don Flynn.

Baseball assistant ­ Texas Tech's Travis Walden resigned as an assistant coach.

Men's basketball ­ Rodney Tention was selected as head coach at Loyola Marymount. Tention, who replaces Steve Aggers, spent eight years as an assistant at Arizona ... Muskingum tabbed Geno Ford as head coach to succeed Jim Burson. Since 2002, Ford has worked as an assistant at Kent State ... North Carolina-Greensboro selected Mike Dement as head coach. Dement, who replaces Fran McCaffery, formerly was head coach at the school from 1991 to 1995, and most recently has been head coach at Southern Methodist ... Dave Rose was elevated to head coach at Brigham Young. Rose, who replaces Steve Cleveland, has been associate head coach. Cleveland, who guided the Cougars for eight seasons, was named as head coach at Fresno State to replace Ray Lopes ... Eastern Illinois tabbed Mike Miller as head coach. Miller, who has been an assistant at Kansas State for four years, takes over for Rick Samuels ... Eastern Kentucky hired Jeff Neubauer as head coach to succeed Travis Ford. For the past three seasons, Neubauer has been an assistant at West Virginia ... Orlando Early was named as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe. Early, who replaces Mike Vining, has spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Alabama ... Savannah State chose Horace Broadnax as head coach. Broadnax most recently has worked as a partner in an Orlando law firm and formerly served as head coach at Bethune-Cookman from 1997 to 2002 ... Steve Shurina, head coach at Western Carolina for the past five seasons, was reassigned to a teaching post at the school through the end of his contract, which expires at the end of the 2005-06 season ... Buzz Peterson was hired as head coach at Coastal Carolina. Peterson, who replaces Pete Strickland, most recently was released after four seasons as head coach at Tennessee ... Tusculum's Duggar Baucom stepped down as head coach to become head coach at VMI ... Stony Brook tabbed Steve Pikiell as head coach. Pikiell, who has been an associate coach at George Washington for the past three seasons, succeeds Nick Macarchuk ... Rob Jeter was hired as head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee to replace Bruce Pearl. Jeter has been an assistant at Wisconsin for four years.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Dennis Gates was named as an assistant coach at California to replace George Nessman. Gates has coached with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers as well as at Marquette and Florida State ... Tulsa added David Cason as an assistant. Cason has been an assistant at TCU for two seasons ... Leroy Washington was tabbed as an assistant at Idaho. Washington was an assistant at Wyoming for five years.

Women's basketball ­ Tammy Millsaps was appointed as head coach at Bloomsburg. Millsaps most recently has been interim head coach for the program ... Tusculum hired Missy Tiber as head coach to replace Suzanne McBride. Tiber has been head coach at Belmont Abbey for the past four years ... Cornell chose Brent Brase as head coach. Brase, who has been head men's basketball coach at Coe for 11 seasons, takes over for Nicole Kotrba ... Lynchburg's Richie Waggoner resigned as head women's basketball coach and assistant softball coach. Waggoner led the women's basketball program for six seasons ... Stephany Smith was hired as head coach at Alabama to replace the retired Rick Moody. Smith led Middle Tennessee State to a 153-88 record in eight seasons as head coach ... Providence named Phil Seymore as head coach. Seymore, who takes over for Susan Yow, has been an assistant coach with the school's men's basketball squad for the past five seasons ... Chris Denker resigned as head coach at Colorado State. Denker had been in charge of the program since 2002 ... Columbia appointed Paul E. Nixon as head coach. Nixon, who replaces Tory Verdi, has been an assistant at Indiana since 2002 ... Chicago elevated Aaron Roussell to head coach. Roussell has been with the program since September of last year and served as interim of head coach during the 2004-05 season ... Louisiana Tech promoted Chris Long to head coach to replace Kurt Budke. Long has been an assistant with the program for six years ... Sharon Versyp was selected as head coach at Indiana. Versyp, who led Maine to three straight America East Conference championships in five years as head coach, takes over for Kathi Bennett ... Beth Burns was named as head coach at San Diego State to succeed Jim Tomey. Burns formerly was in charge of the program from 1989 to 1997 and most recently has been strength and conditioning coach for women's basketball at Stanford.

Men's and women's cross country assistant ­ Philadelphia U. selected Dave Thomas as an assistant coach.

Equestrian ­ Stephen F. Austin announced Leigh Heusner as head women's coach.

Football ­ Mike Leach was awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2009 season as head coach at Texas Tech. Leach has been in charge of the program for five seasons ... Mark Snyder was hired as head coach at Marshall. Snyder, an assistant coach at Ohio State for the past four years, succeeds the retired Bob Pruett.

Football assistants ­ Albany added Art Tolliver as defensive line coach and Will Luca as tight ends coach. Tolliver has been defensive coordinator at Erie (New York) Community College since 2001 and Luca has been offensive line coach at Moravian for two years. The school also promoted Peter Rossomando to offensive coordinator and named Ryan Roeder and David Parks as graduate assistant coaches. Rossomando spent four seasons as offensive line coach at Albany. Roeder most recently was an assistant at Holy Cross and Parks coached at St. John Fisher last fall ... Craig Morgan was chosen as offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator and Randy Bove was announced as secondary coach at West Virginia Wesleyan. Morgan has spent the past year as a student assistant offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Furman. Bove has been head coach at Culpepper (Virginia) High School for four years ... Southern's Henry Miller resigned as defensive backs coach.

Men's and women's golf ­ Jeff Nelson was tabbed as head women's coach at Montana State-Billings. Nelson will continue as head golf pro at Briarwood Golf Club, a post he has held for two years.

Men's soccer ­ Mike Jeffries was selected as head coach at Incarnate Word. Jeffries has spent the past year as a volunteer men's assistant coach at Southern Methodist and formerly was head coach of Major League Soccer's Dallas Burn for three years.

Men's soccer assistant ­ James Madison chose Sam Cameron as an assistant.

Women's soccer ­ Belmont hired Lisa Howe as head coach to replace Chris Bosworth. Howe formerly was head coach at Jacksonville State ... Aria Garsys was named as head coach at Geneseo State. Garsys replaces Aimee Canale Koch ... Missouri-Rolla appointed Jon Kiester as head coach to succeed Al Iantorno. For the past four years, Kiester has worked as an assistant coach at Oregon ... Benjamin Wade was chosen as head coach at Southwest Baptist. Wade has been in charge of the program at Lassen College since it began in 2002 and has guided the school to a 67-6-1 record.

Men's and women's squash ­ Pamela Saunders was selected as head coach at Mount Holyoke. Saunders has spent the past year as interim head coach at the school.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Angela Henke was selected as director of the indoor tennis center at Montana State-Billings.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Michele Ide was announced as head coach at DeSales. Ide formerly was head assistant coach at Slippery Rock and most recently has been an assistant varsity boys' coach at the high-school level ... Adams State named Lindy Mortensen as head coach. Mortensen has been head coach at Montezuma-Cortez (Colorado) High School for nine years ... Mount Holyoke hired Peer Nasseir as head women's coach. Nasseir has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Springfield for the past year ... Taras Liskevych was chosen as head women's coach at Oregon State to succeed Nancy Somera. Liskevych formerly was head coach of the U.S. National Women's Volleyball Team for 12 years and most recently has been owner and president of Total Sports, Inc., a sports marketing and consulting firm ... Central State will not renew the contract of head men's and women's coach Chanteau White.

Staff

Development ­ Eric Buskirk was hired as director of athletics development at Limestone. Buskirk has worked as coordinator of external affairs at Lynn for the past two years.

Facilities ­ Northern Colorado selected Corey Edwards as coordinator of athletics facilities and events. Edwards most recently has been head girls' basketball coach at Greeley West (Colorado) High School.

Strength and conditioning ­ Scott Kirchman was named as head strength and conditioning coach at Belmont. Kirchman, who succeeds Andy Britton, has been at Campbell ... Harvard tabbed Craig Fitzgerald as director of strength and conditioning. For the past five years, Fitzgerald has served as assistant director of strength and conditioning at Maryland.

Conferences

Cory Blackson was named as sports information director for the USA South Athletic Conference. Blackson has been assistant sports information director at Capital.

Notables

Temeka Johnson was selected as the 2005 Nancy Lierberman Award winner as the nation's top women's college basketball point guard. Johnson, who helped LSU to a 33-2 mark and its second straight NCAA Women's Final Four appearance, is the Southeastern Conference's all-time leader in assists ... LSU's Seimone Augustus was chosen as the 2005 Naismith Trophy winner as women's college basketball player of the year. Augustus also captured United States Basketball Writers Association player of the year, State Farm Wade Trophy and Associated Press player of the year honors. The 2005 Southeastern Conference player of the year and Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association all-American averaged 20.1 points and 4.5 rebounds ... Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun and former LSU head women's coach Sue Gunter were elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

DEATHS

Former Syracuse men's basketball student-athlete Edwin "Eddie" Moss died of cancer April 2. He was 45. Moss played point guard for the Orange from 1977 to 1981.

Former Northwestern State football coach Glenn Gossett died April 9. He was 76. From 1967 to 1971, Gossett, who also served as athletics director at the school, guided the program to a 31-14 record. He formerly was an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky, Arkansas State and Southern Methodist.

Ken Hosterman, former head men's soccer coach at Penn State, died April 7. He was 80. Hosterman worked as head coach from 1953 to 1967. The 1955 National Soccer Coaches Association of America coach of the year, Hosterman led the Nittany Lions to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1954 and 1955.

Former Francis Marion softball student-athlete Jodie Christa Hatzenbihler died in an automobile accident April 9. Hatzenbihler, 25, played outfield and catcher for the Patriots from 1999 to 2001. She was named most valuable player for the team as a freshman and batted .275, scored 68 runs and drove in 48 runs in 158 career games.

Julian "Jules" Granovetter, formerly men's and women's tennis coach at New Jersey City, died recently. He was 88.
