Norfolk State selects former coach as AD

 Norfolk State named Marty Miller as director of athletics.

Miller, who has filled the post on an interim basis since December of last year, spent the past 32 years as head baseball coach at the school before stepping down in February. In that capacity, he guided the Spartans to 718 victories and 17 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. The winningest baseball coach in the CIAA, Miller is a John B. McLendon Hall of Fame and Norfolk State Athletics Foundation Sports Hall of Fame selection. He also has served as assistant vice-president for student affairs during his tenure at the school.

Miller was a 1969 graduate of Norfolk State, where he was an all-American baseball student-athlete from 1965 to 1968.

TRANSACTIONS

Directors of athletics

Southwest Baptist promoted Brent Good to director of athletics. Good, who succeeds Jim Middleton, has been with the school since 2002 and most recently has served as associate athletics director.

Senior woman administrator

Montana State appointed Camie Bechtold as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for student and compliance services. Bechtold has been an associate commissioner for the Great Lakes Valley Conference since 2001.

Assistant directors of athletics

Southern Illinois elevated Kristina Therriault and Ed Thompson to assistant athletics directors. Therriault has been with the school since 1995 and has worked as coordinator of student services since 2001. Thompson, who is head trainer, has been with the school for 16 years.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Chris Brown was hired as head coach at Montana State-Billings. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2006 after being discontinued 30 years ago. Brown was in his third season as head coach at Bemidji State.

Baseball assistants ­ Keene State added Eric Kilburn as an assistant coach and Tim Kendrick as a student assistant.

Men's basketball ­ Bruce Pearl was selected as head coach at Tennessee to replace Buzz Peterson. Pearl has been head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee ... Massachusetts appointed Travis Ford as head coach. Ford, who succeeds Steve Lappas, has been in charge of the program at Eastern Kentucky ... Miami (Florida) awarded head coach Frank Haith a five-year contract extension ... Dane Fife was hired as head coach at Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne. Fife has been an assistant coach at Indiana for two seasons ... Wichita State awarded Mark Turgeon with a three-year contract extension through June 30, 2010. Turgeon has led the Shocker program for five seasons ... Reggie Theus was appointed as head coach at New Mexico State. For the past two years, Theus has been an assistant at Louisville ... UC Riverside tabbed David Spencer as head coach. A former assistant at Hawaii, Long Beach State and Nevada, Spencer has been the athletics department's academic coordinator since July 2001 ... Brian Nash was hired as head coach at St. Francis (New York). Since 2001, Nash has worked as an assistant at Seton Hall.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Jon Bishop was chosen as an assistant coach at Missouri Western State. For the past three seasons, Bishop has been an assistant at Angelo State ... Assumption named Guillermo Sanchez as an assistant coach. Sanchez most recently has been an assistant at Dominican (New York).

Women's basketball ­ Ferne Labati was released after 17 seasons as head coach at Miami (Florida) ... UC Irvine promoted Molly Tuter to head coach. Tuter has been an assistant with the program since 2000 and most recently served as interim head coach after the resignation of head coach Mark Adams ... Central (Iowa) head coach Mick Angel resigned after four seasons.

Football ­ Kevin Higgins was hired as head coach at Citadel to replace John Zernhelt. Last season, Higgins worked as quarterbacks coach and wide receivers coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions ... Westminster (Pennsylvania) head coach Jerry Schmitt resigned to become head coach at Duquesne.

Football assistants ­ Missouri Western State added Regi Trotter as a defensive secondary coach. Trotter formerly has been an assistant at UTEP and Cortland State ... Jerry Glanville was chosen as defensive coordinator at Hawaii. Glanville formerly was head coach of the NFL's Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons ... Monte Henderson was announced as defensive backs coach at Western Illinois. Henderson, who succeeds Kerry Cooks, has been an assistant coach at Arkansas for seven years ... Elon added Ron Antoine as wide receivers coach, Shane Burnham as inside linebackers coach and Jon Shields as defensive line coach. Antoine has been wide receivers coach and academic coordinator at Ohio since 2001 and Burnham spent last season as linebackers coach at Citadel. For the past year, Shields has worked as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Hampden-Sydney ... Perry Jehlicka was named as wide receivers coach and director of football operations at Tusculum. For the past two seasons, Jehlicka has been defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Charleston (West Virginia) ... Delaware chose Neal Brown as receivers coach and selected Dyran Peake as defensive backs coach. Brown, who takes over for Bryan Bossard, has been an assistant at Sacred Heart, and Peake, an assistant at Cornell last season, replaces Craig Cummings. The school also elevated Brian McArdle to tight ends coach to succeed Dave Scott. Most recently, McArdle was a graduate assistant coach.

Rowing ­ Dowling elevated Peter Lee to head coach. Lee, who also serves as assistant to the athletics director, was an assistant coach with the program.

Men's soccer assistant ­ Justin Maullin was chosen as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Greensboro. For the past six seasons, Maullin, who succeeds Darren Powell, has worked as an assistant at Central Florida.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Greensboro selected Bradley Herndon as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Robert A. Dorn was tabbed as head coach at Saint Rose. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2006 after being discontinued since 1998. Dorn has been head girls' track and field and head cross country coach at Albany (New York) High School ... Jeff Wettach was named as head men's and women's coach at Luther to succeed Betsy Emerson. For the past 18 years, Wettach has been in charge of the men's track and field team at the school and has guided the men's cross country team for eight seasons ... Ty Sevin was tabbed as head coach at McNeese State to replace Russ Buller. Sevin spent the past season as an assistant coach at Michigan State.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants ­ Tusculum selected Michael Robinson as an assistant women's coach. Last season, Robinson worked as head coach at T.C. Roberson (North Carolina) High School and formerly was an assistant coach at Mars Hill ... Skydra Orzen was chosen as an assistant at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Staff

Sports information ­ Vermont named Lisa Champagne as director of athletics communications, effective in May. Champagne, who replaces Gordon Woodworth, has been assistant director of athletics communications at the school since October 1998.

Sports information assistant ­ Kimberly Gardner was appointed as associate director of media relations at Massachusetts.

National office

Denise DeHass was elevated to associate director of research at the national office. DeHass has been an assistant director ... Jan Gentry was named as an assistant director of championships, effective May 2. Gentry most recently has been part of the national office's enforcement services staff.

Notables

Minnesota's Krissy Wendell was named as the 2005 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner by the USA Hockey Foundation as the top NCAA Division I women's ice hockey student-athlete. Wendell, a two-time all-American and two-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association player of the year, helped lead the Gophers to their second straight NCAA women's ice hockey national championship on March 27.

DEATHS

Georgia State men's basketball student-athlete Tikoyo Barnett died in a March 27 automobile accident. The junior, 22, appeared in 28 games and averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last season.
