St. John's announces Monasch as AD

 Chris Monasch has been hired as director of athletics at St. John's (New York).

Monasch, current chair of the NCAA Division I Management Council, succeeds James Pellow, interim athletics director and current executive vice-president at the school. For the past eight years, Monasch has served as commissioner at the America East Conference. He also spent nine years as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In addition, Monasch has worked as an associate athletics director at Seton Hall and formerly was an assistant athletics director and interim athletics director at Fordham.

Monasch has served on numerous NCAA committees, including the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, Recruiting Committee and the Division I Baseball Committee.

Monasch earned a master of arts in communication at Fordham in 1984 and earned a juris doctorate at Seton Hall in 1993.

Cal Poly elevates Cone to athletics director

 Cal Poly has appointed Alison E. Cone as director of athletics. She becomes the school's first female athletics director.

Cone, who replaces John McCutcheon, has been interim athletics director since February of last year. A member of the Cal Poly athletics administration since 1994, she has been a senior associate director of athletics for more than 11 years. Cone was director of athletics academic services at Washington State and also formerly was athletics academic coordinator at Cal State Fullerton. She also has coached and taught since 1975.

Cone earned a bachelor's degree in physical education at Washington State and earned a master's degree in education from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Her NCAA committee service includes having completed a term on the Division I Management Council.

Chief exective officers

Baylor President Robert B. Sloan Jr. stepped down, effective at the end of May. Sloan will become chancellor at the school ... Saint Mary's (California) named Ronald Gallagher as president. Gallagher, who has been chairman of the school's department of English and drama since 2002, succeeds Craig J. Franz ... Roger H. Hull resigned as president at Union (New York), effective in June ... Flavius C. Killebrew was announced as president at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Most recently, Killebrew has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at West Texas A&M ... Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran was selected as president at Kalamazoo, effective in July. Wilson-Oyelaran has been vice-president at Salem Academy and dean of the college at Salem ... Indiana (Pennsylvania) named Tony Atwater as president. Atwater was provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Youngstown State ... Former Millikin President Thomas F. Flynn was appointed as president at Alvernia. Flynn succeeds Laurence W. Mazzeno, who announced plans to retire at the end of the 2004-05 academic year ... Carolyn R. Mahoney was chosen as president at Lincoln (Missouri). Mahoney has been provost and vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City State ... Margaret Stallmeyer was named as president at Thomas More. Most recently, Stallmeyer filled the post on an interim basis ... Joe Aguillard was named as president at Louisiana College. Aguillard has been an associate professor and chair of the division of education at the school ... Utah State announced Stan L. Albrecht as president. Albrecht, who most recently has worked at the school as executive vice-president and provost, succeeds Kermit L. Hall, who was appointed as president at Albany (New York) ... Citadel President John S. Grinalds announced plans to retire, effective August 1 ... Nathan O. Hatch, provost at Notre Dame, was selected as president at Wake Forest.

Directors of athletics

Westfield State's Ken Magarian stepped down as director of athletics, but will continue with the school as part of the student affairs division. Magarian has been with the athletics department for 32 years and has spent the past 10 years as athletics director. The school chose Timothy Murphy, director of human resources at Westfield State, as Magarian's interim successor ... Texas-Pan American hired Scott Street as director of athletics. Street has been at Texas-San Antonio for seven years and most recently has served as senior associate athletics director for administration.

Associate director of athletics

Joe Gentry resigned as associate athletics director and sports information director at Indianapolis to become communications director for the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Assistant directors of athletics

Brian August was hired as assistant athletics director and head baseball coach at Wilmington (Delaware) to replace Matt Brainard, who resigned after 10 years. August has been assistant athletics director, assistant baseball coach and building and grounds supervisor at Cecil County Community College for the past four years ... San Diego tabbed Briana Zaldivar Ruff as assistant athletics director for marketing. Ruff has been a manager of corporate sales and marketing at Anschutz Entertainment Group ... Cathy Jo Dedrick was named as assistant director of athletics for business and finance at UMBC. Since 2001, Dedrick has worked as assistant business manager in the athletics department at Maryland ... Dallas Baptist selected Ryan Erwin as assistant athletics director for media relations and compliance. For the past two years, Erwin has served as sports information director and compliance officer at the school.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Westfield State appointed Ray Arra as acting head coach. For the past two seasons, Arra has worked as an assistant with the program.

Baseball assistant ­ Misericordia appointed Mike Mould as an assistant. Mould, who retired last year after serving as athletics director at Misericordia for 14 years, formerly was head baseball coach at Keystone.

Men's basketball ­ Lou Henson retired as head coach at New Mexico State. Henson has a career mark of 779-413 and is the sixth winningest NCAA Division I college basketball coach in history ... Brian Ammann resigned as head men's basketball coach and head men's golf coach at Augsburg. Ammann has been in charge of the programs since 1988. The school announced Gabe Ziegler as interim head men's basketball coach.

Men's basketball assistant ­ Kenya Hunter was chosen as an assistant at Xavier. Hunter has been director of basketball operations at North Carolina State.

Women's basketball ­ Dennis Masi resigned as head coach at Southern New Hampshire, effective at the end of the 2004-05 season. Masi has been in charge of the program since May 1999.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Tusculum tabbed Phil Roberts as head coach to succeed Jim Fields, who resigned after five seasons. Roberts formerly was an assistant cross country and track and field assistant at Western Carolina and most recently has been coaching at Greeneville (Tennessee) High School.

Football ­ Massachusetts Maritime selected Jeremy Cameron as head football coach and associate director of athletics recruiting. Cameron, who replaces Joe Domingos, has been an assistant coach at Wagner since 2000 ... Steve Keenum resigned as head coach at McMurry to become an area director with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Keenum guided the program for 10 seasons and also served as director of athletics at the school from 2001 to 2004 ... Minnesota State Moorhead chose Chad Eisele as head coach to replace Ralph Micheli. For the past five years, Eisele has worked as head coach at Lake Forest ... Todd Whitten was hired as head coach at Sam Houston State. Whitten, who succeeds the retired Ron Randleman, has been in charge of the program at Tarleton State since 2000 ... John Fassel resigned as head coach at New Mexico Highlands to become an assistant with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. The school announced Santos Carillo, assistant head coach, was tabbed as Fassel's interim successor ... Kalamazoo chose Terrance A. Brooks as head coach. Brooks formerly has been assistant head coach at Shenandoah ... Phillip Fulmer, head coach at Tennessee, signed a one-year contract extension through the 2011 season ... Washington State's Bill Doba was awarded a contract extension through the 2009 season as head coach. Doba joined the program in 1989 and has been head coach since 2003.

Football assistants ­ Tucker Waugh was added as wide receivers coach at Stanford. For the past five seasons, Waugh has worked as an assistant coach at Army ... Syracuse tabbed Jim Salgado as cornerbacks coach and secondary coach. Salgado has been assistant head coach and defensive backs coach at Northeastern ... Minnesota State Mankato announced Mike Ekeler as defensive coordinator. For the past two seasons, Ekeler has worked as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma ... Marc Trestman was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina State. Trestman, who was quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach with the NFL's Miami Dolphins last season, takes over for Noel Mazzone ... Western Michigan added Chuck Bullough as linebackers coach, Steve Morrison as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, Mike Sullivan as offensive line coach and Paul Williams as defensive secondary coach. Bullough has been linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Lake Forest for the past season and Morrison spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Michigan. Most recently, Sullivan has served as an assistant coach with the NFL's Cleveland Browns and Williams has been an assistant coach at Delaware for six seasons ... Ken Margerum was chosen as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Steve Morton was tabbed as offensive line coach and Brent Brennan was appointed as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at San Jose State. Margerum and Morton most recently were assistant coaches at Stanford and Brennan has been an assistant at San Diego State and Cal Poly ... Arizona hired Josh Heupel as tight ends coach. Last season, Heupel worked as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma ... Nelson Barnes was hired as defensive line coach at Oklahoma State. Barnes was defensive line coach at North Dakota State ... Southern California named Jethro Franklin as defensive line coach to replace Ed Orgeron ... Todd Wash was chosen as defensive line coach and Steve Laqua was named as running backs coach at North Dakota State. Wash has been an assistant at Missouri Southern, and takes over for Nelson Barnes. Laqua, who succeeds Tim Albin, was an assistant at Minnesota-Crookston. The school also elevated Reggie Moore, wide receivers coach, to full-time.

Men's and women's golf ­ Caldwell appointed Ron Gerhold as head coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Guilford's John Burke resigned after 18 months as head men's coach. The school announced Andrew Rowe as interim head coach ... Russell Ketcham was announced as head men's coach at Maritime. Ketcham has coached at the high-school level and formerly was a volunteer assistant coach at Hofstra and Merchant Marine ... Saint Leo selected Brad Jorgensen, head coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts) for the past seven years, as head coach of its men's program, which is set to begin competition during the 2005-06 academic year. Wheaton named Steve Batchelor, an assistant with the program for the past year, as Jorgensen's interim successor ... Karen Healy accepted responsibilities as head women's coach at Bryant to succeed Wynne Lobel. Healy has been assistant program director at MetroLacrosse and formerly was an assistant at Massachusetts for two seasons.

Men's soccer ­ Dennis Currier was named as head coach at Dayton. Currier has been in charge of the program at Incarnate Word, where he guided teams to four straight conference championships from 2001 to 2004.

Women's soccer ­ Laura (Whiteley) Passage was named as head coach at Kalamazoo.

Softball ­ Tusculum's Lisa Dean was relieved of duty after four seasons as head coach, effective immediately. The school announced Wes Holly Jr., an assistant with the program, as interim head coach for the 2005 season.

Softball assistant ­ Indianapolis hired Kelli Hall as an assistant.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Northern Colorado appointed Kevin Galbraith as head track and field and cross country coach. Galbraith has been an assistant track and field coach at Long Beach State since 1999.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Adams State chose Lisa Crowder as interim head coach to replace Katie Moskowitz, who resigned ... Justin Gibert was hired as head coach at Lamar. Gibert has spent the past two seasons as the top assistant women's coach at Stephen F. Austin ... Augustana (Illinois) selected Stacey Ruff as head coach to replace Betsy Knott. Ruff formerly was head coach at Dubuque from 2001 to 2003 ... Danijela Tomic was appointed as head coach at Florida International. Tomic has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU for two seasons ... Tulane promoted Liz Kritza to head coach. Kritza, who has been an assistant coach with the program for six seasons, takes over for Betsy Becker ... Shawn Garus was hired as head women's coach at North Carolina-Greensboro. Garus, who succeeds Stacy Kosciak, has been top assistant at San Francisco for two years ... Ruben Nieves was named as head coach at Fresno State to succeed Lindy Vivas. From 1991 to 2001, Nieves was in charge of the program at Stanford and has spent the past three years as manager of trainer development for the Positive Coaching Alliance at Stanford.

Wrestling ­ Fresno State's Dennis DeLiddo announced plans to retire as head coach at the end of the 2005 season. DeLiddo has guided the Bulldogs to nine conference team titles and has been named Western Athletic Conference coach of the year four times in 24 seasons as head coach.

Staff

Administration ­ Guilford's Mike Ketchum resigned as assistant to the athletics director.

Compliance ­ Annamarie Lyst was named as compliance coordinator at Oregon State. For the past year, Lyst, who replaces Heath Senour, has been an assistant director for compliance at TCU.

Sports information ­ Wellesley announced Beth Usewicz as sports information director.

Sports information assistants ­ Josh Maxson was named as an assistant sports information director at Arkansas. Maxson has been an assistant sports information director at Miami (Florida) for the past two years ... Illinois State hired Heather Freehill as an assistant media relations director. Since June 2003, Freehill has worked as a graduate assistant in the school's athletics media relations department.

Conferences

The Big 12 awarded Commissioner Kevin Weiberg with a four-year contract extension. Weiberg has been in charge of the league since 1998.

Associations

David M. Davis was named as a member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of Directors. Davis is president of the 2005 Tournament of Roses and chairman of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Football Committee.

Corrections

In the January 17 Briefly in the News section, Tennessee State University was omitted from a list of Division I historically black colleges and universities that currently have a female athletics director and ethnic minority head men's and women's basketball coaches. Teresa Phillips is the athletics director and Cy Alexander serves as head men's basketball coach. Tracee Jones is interim head women's basketball coach at the school.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced the following as recipients of annual NSCAA/
adidas national coach of the year honors: NCAA Division I men ­ Tim Vom Steeg, UC Santa Barbara; NCAA Division I women ­ Julie Shackford, Princeton; NCAA Division II men ­ Peter Fewing, Seattle; NCAA Division II women ­ Danny Sanchez, Metro State; NCAA Division III men ­ David Brandt, Messiah; NCAA Division III women ­ Pete Felske, Wheaton (Illinois).

DEATHS

Former Southern Indiana men's basketball student-athlete Ronnie Griffin died recently. In one season at the school, Griffin averaged 14 points and seven rebounds.

Antwoine Key, a basketball student-athlete at Eastern Connecticut State, died January 20. He was 22. Key, a senior guard, started all 14 games and averaged 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds a game this season. He was a sports and leisure major.

Former Cal Baptist President James R. Staples died January 3. Staples was 84.

DeLoren Young, a freshman football running back at West Liberty State, died recently.

Don Poier, an announcer for Pacific-10 Conference football and basketball contests, died January 21. He was 53. Poier, who also had been an announcer for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies since 1995, played football at Pacific Lutheran for three seasons in the early 1970s.

Loyola (Maryland) President Harold Ridley died January 18. Ridley was 65.

Former American President Joseph J. Sisco died November 23. Sisco was 85.
