Cartwright steps down at Kent State

 Kent State President Carol A. Cartwright an nounced plans to step down, effective with the selection of a successor.

Cartwright, former chair of the NCAA Executive Committee from 2003 to 2005, was named as the university's 10th president in March of 1991. The first female president of a public university in Ohio, she also was a member of the NCAA Board of Directors from 1997 to 2005. Since 2000, Cartwright has been a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and began a three-year term with the American Council on Education Commission on Women in Higher Education in 2003. Last year, she was selected to the board of directors for National Public Radio. She also has been chairperson of the board of director for the American Association for Higher Education.

Prior to accepting the presidency at Kent State, Cartwright completed tenures as vice chancellor for academic affairs at UC Davis and dean for undergraduate programs and vice provost at Penn State.

Cartwright earned a bachelor's degree at Wisconsin-Whitewater and earned a master's degree and doctoral degree from Pittsburgh.

TRANSACTIONS

Chief executive officers

Cal State East Bay President Norma Rees resigned, effective in June 2006 ... Mary Brown Bullock, president at Agnes Scott, resigned, effective in August 2006 ... Kent State's Carol Cartwright announced plans to retire, effective at the appointment of a successor ... Gregory C. Farrington resigned as president at Lehigh, effective in June 2006 ... Framingham State President Helen Heineman announced plans to retire, effective in January. The school has named Philip Dooher, vice-president for enrollment management and dean of admissions at the school, as Heineman's interim successor.

Directors of athletics

Cincinnati named Mike Thomas as director of athletics, effective December 1. Thomas, who succeeds the retiring Bob Goin, has spent the past five years as athletics director at Akron ... Curtis Campbell was selected as athletics director at Blackburn. Campbell, who has been an assistant athletics director at Kentucky State for the past three and a half years, succeeds Joe Ramsey ... Patrick Guillen was selected as interim director of athletics at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Guillen has been with the school since 1995 and most recently has served as assistant athletics director for media relations.

Associate director of athletics

John Rasmussen was hired as associate athletics director for development at Evansville. For the past three years, Rasmussen has served as director of the Tiger Scholarship Fund at Missouri.

Assistant directors of athletics

Morehead State announced LaTanya Edwards as assistant director of athletics and senior woman administrator. Edwards most recently has been project manager with the 2005 Ford Mustang for General Fasteners Company ... Luke Sayers accepted responsibilities as assistant athletics director for corporate sales, marketing and promotions at Tennessee Tech. Sayers was marketing coordinator at Ohio for three years before being promoted to director of marketing in 2004.

Coaches

Baseball ­ Rob Valli was hired as head coach at Temple to succeed the retired Skip Wilson. Since 2001, Valli, formerly an assistant coach at Rutgers, has guided Gloucester County College to a 225-55-1 record and the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association national championship.

Baseball assistants ­ James Madison added Rob McCoy as a volunteer assistant coach ... George Washington appointed Don Norris as an assistant coach. Norris spent the 2004 season as an assistant coach at Georgia.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Rhode Island College added Matt O'Brien as an assistant coach and selected Bill Black as a volunteer assistant coach. O'Brien was a 2005 graduate of Elmira, where he was a four-year member of the basketball squad. Black assisted with administration, recruiting and scouting for the program during the 2004-05 season ... Barry Friedman was chosen as an assistant coach at Greensboro. Friedman also serves as an assistant cross country coach at the school ... Derek Schulte was added as an assistant coach at Central (Iowa). Schulte has been junior varsity coach and a graduate assistant coach at Coe for the past two seasons ... Evansville appointed Rhet Wierzba as director of men's basketball operations. Last season, Wierzba was a graduate assistant at Austin Peay.

Women's basketball assistants ­ Army hired Dave Magarity as associate head coach. Magarity formerly was head men's basketball coach at Marist and most recently has been assistant commissioner and director of men's basketball operations at the Mid-American Conference ... Diane Decker was added as an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg. Decker has been coaching at the high-school level ... Central (Iowa) chose Bret Grier as an assistant coach. For the past two seasons, Grier has been a student assistant at Grand View College ... Mark Miller was chosen as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary's. Miller, who succeeds Robbie Turner, has been an associate head coach at Loyola (Maryland) for four seasons.

Men's and women's cross country ­ Dan Flynn was named as head men's and women's coach at Lesley. Flynn has been long and middle distance track and field coach at Thayer Academy in Massachusetts.

Men's and women's fencing ­ Allison Schwartz was hired as head women's coach at James Madison. Schwartz takes over for Mac Shaker.

Football ­ Macalester's Dennis Czech resigned as head coach, effective at the end of the season. Czech has been in charge of the program for eight years.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants ­ Matt Lindsay was appointed as a volunteer coach at Colorado College. Lindsay formerly was an assistant at Hobart ... Bentley announced Mark White as an assistant coach. White formerly spent three years playing professionally in the ECHL and the ACHL.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants ­ William Smith chose Liz Harris as an assistant coach. Harris was a three-year starter for the school's women's lacrosse program before graduating in May 2005 ... Maggie McKee and Kirsten Harlow accepted responsibilities as assistant coaches at Colorado College. McKee formerly was an assistant coach at New Hampshire. Harlow, a 1999 graduate of the school, was a former goalie for the program.

Men's soccer ­ Paul Vasconcelos was appointed as head coach at Lesley. Formerly an assistant coach at Emerson, Vasconcelos has served as director of coaching at the Eastern Massachusetts FC, a youth soccer club.

Men's and women's swimming assistant ­ Colorado College tabbed Sara McLarty as a volunteer assistant.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Shenandoah's Steve Soliday resigned as head men's and women's coach. Soliday has been in charge of the program since August 2004 ... Mikhail "Misha" Kouznetsov was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Robert Morris. Kouznetsov takes over for Evan Schermer, who resigned ... Robert Hubbard was tabbed as head men's and women's coach at Texas-Pan American. For the past five seasons, Hubbard has served as head men's coach at Goucher.

Men's and women's track and field assistant ­ Joe Gibson accepted responsibilities as an assistant men's track and field and cross country coach at James Madison.

Staff

Assistant athletic trainer ­ Trevor Hadley resigned as assistant athletic trainer at McMurry.

Development ­ Longwood hired Troy Austin as director of development for intercollegiate athletics. Austin has been director of program development and marketing relations for the National Football League Coaches Association since 2003.

Marketing and promotions ­ Aimee Trantham was named as coordinator of athletics marketing at Texas-Pan American. For the past two years, Trantham has worked as graduate director of marketing and promotions at Belmont.

Sports information ­ Northern Colorado promoted Kyle Schwartz to director of media relations. Schwartz has been with the school for four years and most recently worked as media relations coordinator.

Strength and conditioning assistants ­ David Emery, Nathan Wehunt and Steve Bamel were added as assistant strength and conditioning coaches at James Madison.

Associations

Katherine McConnell resigned as executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, effective January 31, 2006.

National office

Byron Hatch, Shana Levine and Phil Hunt were named as assistant directors of membership services at the national office.

The national office announced Jay Jones as associate director of membership services.

Notables

Mike Krzyzewski, head men's basketball coach at Duke, was announced as the head coach for the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team program for 2006-08. Krzyzewski will lead the U.S. Men's National Team to the 2006 FIBA World Championship; if necessary, the 2007 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament; and, if the United States qualifies, the 2008 Summer Olympics.

DEATHS

Former Saint Joseph's sports information director Andy Dougherty died October 4. Dougherty's tenure as sports information director at the school began in 1972 and spanned 11 years until his retirement in 1983. He also served as a manager for the basketball program as an undergraduate at Saint Joseph's in the 1940s and was a sportswriter for the Catholic Standard and Times.

Former New Jersey City track and field student-athlete John D. Bateman died September 12. He was 62. Bateman competed in the long jump and triple jump for then Jersey City State College and was captain of the 1971 team.
