Army chooses Anderson as next director

 Army has selected Kevin Anderson as director of athletics. Anderson, the first African American to hold the post at the school, replaces Rick Greenspan, who resigned to become the athletics director at Indiana.

Since December 2002, Anderson has served as executive associate athletics director for external affairs at Oregon State. Before coming to Oregon State, Anderson was part of the athletics administration at California. He joined the Bears athletics staff in 1997 as assistant athletics director for annual programs. He was elevated to associate athletics director for development, tickets and the baseball team two years later and ultimately was promoted to executive associate athletics director for external affairs. In addition, he formerly was area executive director of the YMCA of the East Bay from 1995 to 1997 and director of annual giving for Stanford's athletics department from 1993 to 1995. Anderson also has held positions with the San Francisco Education Fund, the United Negro Fund and Xerox Corporation.

Anderson is a 1979 graduate of San Francisco State with a bachelor's degree in political science. In addition, he graduated from the Xerox's New Manager School and the Xerox Marketing School. Anderson completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute in 1995.

Director of athletics

New Mexico State named McKinley Boston as director of athletics to succeed Brian Faison, who became a vice-president in athletics fund-raising at the school. Boston formerly was athletics director at Minnesota and most recently has been president of MB&A Inc., a consulting and marketing firm.

Assistant director of athletics

Julie Manning was chosen as assistant athletics director for compliance and financial aid at Colorado. Manning, who takes over for Lindsey Babcock, has been head women's golf coach at Iowa State since 1985 and served as assistant to a senior associate athletics director at Iowa State from 1999 to 2003.

Baseball ­ Don Flynn, head coach at Philadelphia U., announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the 2005 season. Flynn has been in charge of the Rams program for 14 years.

Football ­ Stanford appointed Walt Harris as head coach to replace Buddy Teevens. Harris has been head coach at Pittsburgh for eight seasons ... Tyrone Willingham was hired as head coach at Washington. Willingham recently was released after three seasons as head coach at Notre Dame ... Fort Hays State selected Kevin Verdugo as head coach. He served last season as assistant head coach and running backs coach at Akron ... Ron Randleman, head coach at Sam Houston State, announced his retirement. In 23 seasons in charge of the program, Randleman, who also coached at Pittsburg State, has guided the Bearkats to 11 Southland Conference championships and 10 Division I-AA playoff appearances ... Notre Dame named Charlie Weis as head coach to replace Tyrone Willingham. Weis has been offensive coordinator for the NFL's defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots ... Robert McFarland was chosen as head coach at Stephen F. Austin. McFarland, who succeeds Mike Santiago, spent the past season as offensive line coach at East Carolina ... Indiana State appointed Lou West as head coach. For the past four years, West has been defensive coordinator at Toledo ... Brigham Young elevated Bronco Mendenhall to head coach to replace Gary Crowton and interim head coach Lance Reynolds. Mendenhall has served as defensive coordinator for the past two years ... Scott Maxfield was selected as head coach at Henderson State to replace Jesse Branch, who resigned after four seasons. Maxfield has guided Blinn College to two straight junior college playoff appearances ... Ohio hired Frank Solich as head coach to replace Brian Knorr. Solich formerly was head coach at Nebraska, where he was selected as the 1999 and 2001 Big 12 Conference coach of the year ... Ed Orgeron was chosen as head coach at Mississippi to succeed David Cutcliffe. Orgeron has been defensive line coach and assistant head coach at Southern California.

Football assistants ­ Robert Anae was named as offensive coordinator at Brigham Young. Most recently, Anae has been offensive line coach at Texas Tech ... Utah tabbed Andy Ludwig as offensive coordinator, Derrick Odum as secondary coach and Charlie Dickey as offensive line coach. Ludwig has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon for the past three years and Odum has worked as secondary coach at Houston for two seasons. Dickey spent last season as an assistant at Washington ... East Carolina added Wardell "Junior" Smith as running backs coach. Smith has been running backs coach, punt team coordinator and video and professional scout liaison at Louisiana-Monroe ... Florida announced Steve Addazio as tight ends coach, Billy Gonzales as wide receivers coach, John Hevesy as offensive line coach, Dan Mullen as quarterbacks coach and Chuck Heater as an assistant. Gonzales, Hevesy, Mullen and Heater most recently served as assistant coaches at Utah. The school also announced Mike Locksley will continue as an assistant with the program ... Larry Fedora, Joe Wickline and Dan Disch were hired as assistant coaches at Illinois. Fedora most recently was offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Florida and Wickline has spent the past three seasons as Florida's offensive line coach, while Disch completed one season as secondary coach for the Gators ... Brigham Young released Todd Bradford and Mike Emepy as assistants. Bradford served as wide receivers coach and Emepy was tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator ... Jeff Copp was tabbed as an assistant at Utah State. This past season, Copp worked as defensive ends coach at Idaho State ... South Carolina appointed John Hunt as offensive line coach to replace John Latina. Hunt formerly was an assistant coach at Florida and served as offensive line coach with the NFL's Washington Redskins from 2002 to 2003.

Men's and women's golf assistant ­ Mississippi hired Mark Johnson as an assistant men's coach to replace Katherine Mowat. For the past two years, Johnson has been an information technology specialist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Virginia.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants ­ Denison named Anthony Gilardi as an assistant men's coach. Gilardi currently plays lacrosse professionally with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse ... Scott Sullivan was added as an assistant men's coach and defensive coordinator at Moravian. Sullivan has been a defensive assistant at St. Andrews Presbyterian for the past year.

Men's soccer ­ Michael Bradby was appointed as head coach at Holy Family. Bradby, who takes over for John Amorim, has been an assistant coach at Archbishop Ryan (Pennsylvania) High School since 1991 ... Elon appointed Darren Powell as head coach. For the past four seasons, Powell has worked as an assistant at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Women's soccer ­ Elon's Matt Clark resigned as head coach ... Kim Banner was promoted to head coach at Sacred Heart. Banner, an assistant women's soccer coach for eight years as well as an assistant women's lacrosse coach for the past two seasons, succeeds Joe Barroso, who was named as head men's coach at the school to replace the retired Joe McGuigan.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ­ Scott Lemley was hired as head women's coach at Alaska Fairbanks. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in the fall of 2005. Lemley has been head coach at Lathrop (Alaska) High School for the past five seasons.

Men's and women's track and field assistants ­ South Dakota State tabbed Jessica Sommerfeld as an assistant. Sommerfeld formerly was an assistant coach at Texas Christian ... Kirk Elias and Heather Hendrix-Holmes were added as assistants at Nevada. Elias was head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock and Hendrix-Holmes has been coaching at South Florida.

Staff

Athletic trainer ­ Bill Kinsey was hired as an athletic trainer at Earlham.

Equipment manager­ Delaware chose Jon R. Helbig as head equipment manager to succeed Kevin Rose. Helbig has been an assistant equipment manager at Widener since 1996.

Sports information assistant ­ Matt Schabert was appointed as an assistant sports information director at Texas-San Antonio. For the past year, Schabert has worked as an intern in the Virginia Tech sports information office.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Drake's Randy Dolson resigned after four seasons as head coach.

Associations

Robert F. Casciola announced plans to step down in February 2005 as president of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The organization chose Steven J. Hatchell, former Big 12 Conference commissioner and current commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, as Casciola's successor ... U.S. Figure Skating named Ramsey Baker as assistant exectuive director for corporate relations and marketing and Jennifer Wozniak as assistant executive director for finance and administration. Bob Dunlop was elevated to assistant executive director for events and athlete resources for the organization.

Notables

Danny O'Rourke and Megan Kakadelas were selected as the 2004 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas college scholar athletes of the year. O'Rourke, a senior midfielder at Indiana, started every game of his four-year career and helped the Hoosiers to back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004. Kakadelas, a senior forward for Santa Clara, led the Broncos in scoring this season and was a first-team NSCAA/adidas Scholar all-America and a second-team NSCAA/adidas all-America selection ... Washington's Jim McLaughlin was chosen as the 2004 Tachikara/American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division I national coach of the year. This season, McLaughlin, who has been in charge of the program for four seasons, led the Huskies to their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division I women's championship semifinals and their first Pacific-10 Conference title ... Rocky Myers, a senior strong safety at Wesley, was announced as the Gagliardi Trophy winner as the top NCAA Division III football student-athlete in the nation. Myers played in all 10 games this season and helped the Wolverines to an 8-2 mark. He tallied 124 tackles, including 62 solo tackles, on the year.

DEATHS

Former New Mexico and Indiana State head men's basketball coach Bob King died recently. He was 81. King oversaw the Lobo program from 1963 to 1972. During his tenure, he earned Western Athletic Conference championships in 1964 and 1968. He also was head coach at Indiana State for three seasons from 1975 to 1978. King's 13-year career record was 236-113.
