Athletics has value, but also runs deficit

Aug 15, 2005 5:37:09 PM

Princeton University Athletics Director Gary Walters has testified to the values athletics can contribute to the educational process (see the guest editorial "Athletics is integral to holistic learning" in the July 18 issue of The NCAA News).

I agree that sports belong in the life of an educated person. Mr. Walters, however, fails to say anything to justify the financial extravagances, anti-academic distractions, and the other problems so ably uncovered in the work of William Bowen and his co-authors.

College leaders, intent on delivering genuine education that includes participation in athletics, need to come up with some better system and jettison what exists now.
