Six individuals -- including four athletics administrators, a faculty athletics representative and a conference commissioner -- have been selected to fill vacancies on the Division III Management Council.
Also, the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has selected a representative to the Council.
The new members are Patricia Epps, senior associate director of athletics and recreation at Franklin & Marshall College; Tim Gleason, commissioner of the Ohio Athletic Conference; Kevin McHugh, director of athletics at The College of New Jersey; Rosalie Resch, associate director of athletics at the University of Chicago; Kay Whitley, director of athletics at Sul Ross State University; and Charles Wilson, associate dean for academic affairs and faculty athletics representative at Olivet College.
All but McHugh were elected to full terms ending in January 2009. McHugh is filling an unexpired term and will be eligible next year for reelection for a full term.
The SAAC position will be filled by Heather Mathis of Maryville College (Tennessee), who will replace Sarah Forbus of Denison University.
Following are brief biographies of the new members.
Epps
Epps became the first senior associate AD in Franklin & Marshall history in August 2004, continuing an association with the school that began when she became adjunct women's tennis and squash coach in 1978.
She assumed full-time duties at the college in 1993, adding responsibilities as assistant director of athletics and recreation. She was promoted to associate AD in 1996.
Epps has served as a member of the Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee, and also has been prominent in governing bodies for the sports she coached, serving from 1983 to 1989 as president of the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association and currently as a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Operating Committee.
As a coach, she compiled a 201-164 record in squash through 23 seasons ending in 2001. Her tennis teams have compiled a 347-119 mark through 25 seasons.
Gleason
Gleason, commissioner of the OAC since 1991, also currently serves as president of the NCAA Division III Commissioners Association.
After completing graduate work at Nicholls State University, Gleason served for three years on the NCAA promotions and licensing staff in Mission, Kansas, beginning in 1980. He then joined the staff of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, where his duties as assistant executive director included administration of the NACDA Foundation and a stint as managing editor of the periodical Athletics Administration.
He established his conference's office in Cleveland in 1991 shortly after his selection as the OAC's first full-time commissioner. Gleason recently has served on the Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee.
Mathis
Mathis recently completed her junior season as starting defender on the women's soccer team at Maryville College (Tennessee), where she was named to the Great South Athletic Conference all-academic team.
A dean's list honoree, she also was selected to the conference's all-freshman team in 2002.
The political science major is active in campus organizations, including the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society and College Republicans, as well as the Maryville Kiwanis. She also has served as official scorer for the Maryville women's basketball team and as intramurals coordinator at the school.
Last spring, Mathis was honored as the college's outstanding sophomore leader, in recognition of outstanding performance as a campus and community leader and potential for future leadership.
She joined the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2003.
McHugh
McHugh is in his 15th year as athletics director for the 21-sport program at The College of New Jersey.
The former Columbia University varsity wrestler earlier served stints as assistant athletics director at Yale University, where he managed operations and facilities, and Bowling Green State University, where he was responsible for day-to-day operations and administrative support for all revenue programs.
McHugh served from 1993 to 1996 as chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee, and he recently has served as a member of the Division III Men's Basketball Committee. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association hall of fame in 1999 as a contributor to the sport of wrestling.
He also is a past president of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Resch
Resch became head women's volleyball coach at Chicago, her alma mater, in 1977, two years after becoming an instructor at the university. She since has served in a variety of athletics and academic positions at the school, becoming anassociate professor of physical education in 1982 and associate athletics director/senior woman administrator in 1990.
Her primary athletics responsibilities are in compliance, and budget and finance, and she recently played a role in the planning and construction of a new athletics center at Chicago.
Resch recently served as a member of the Division III Membership Committee and also has been active in the University Athletic Association.
She compiled 263 victories during 21 seasons as head women's volleyball coach at the school, ending in 1997. She also served for a season as interim softball coach at the school.
Whitley
Whitley, who played on a national championship volleyball team at Sul Ross State in 1971, has served in coaching and administrative positions at the school since 1979.
After enrolling in 1968, she helped start the volleyball team, and 11 years later, she moved from high-school coaching to take the coaching reins of that team and also the women's basketball program. During 18 seasons as volleyball coach, she led her teams to nine league titles.
She became athletics director in 1997, and currently also coaches men's and women's tennis, which have won a combined eight league titles (seven by the women). She also serves as an assistant professor at the school.
Whitley recently has served as a member of the Division III Membership Committee.
Wilson
Wilson is associate dean for academic affairs at Olivet, where he serves as faculty athletics representative. Among his current duties is supervision of the college's Academic Services Support Center, which includes career services, academic advising, Olivet's writing program, at-risk intervention and the honors program.
He is a former athletics director at the school and also has chaired the college's education department and directed its master of arts in teaching program.
Wilson also served for 16 years as an assistant director of athletics at Michigan State University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate in education. He also has served as principal of the W.J. Maxey Boys Training School in Michigan.
He recently served as a member of the Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee.
