Generals surrender to Emory onslaught in women's tennis

Jun 6, 2005 2:33:33 PM

Emory won a third consecutive Division III Women's Tennis Championships team title May 18-23 at Kalamazoo, beating previously unbeaten Washington and Lee, 5-3, in the final.

Though Washington and Lee came up short in the team portion of the tournament, the Generals' Lyndsay Hagerman took the national singles crown with a victory over Liz Bondi of DePauw. The doubles competition was an all-Gustavus Adolphus affair, as Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen beat teammates Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley in the championship match.

Emory started the team championship with wins in two of the three doubles matches, including a 9-8 (3) win by Jamie Chan and partner Carina Alberelli at No. 1 doubles. Ananad and Lindsay Tiemeyer recorded the other Eagles victory at No. 3 doubles, though teammates Serena Burkard and Alexandra Gross fell to Washington and Lee's Emily Applegate and Kristen McClung at No. 2 doubles.

The Eagles earned singles points from Richelle Marasigan, Chan and Indu Anand to clinch Emory's fourth title overall (the Eagles also won in 1996). Alberelli, playing in the No. 1 singles spot, lost in the team competition to eventual individual champion Hagerman.

The match was played to decision, leaving two singles matches unfinished.

Emory's tournament success came with a strong showing from freshman Ananad, who turned in a perfect performance in singles and doubles, finishing the team tournament 6-0. She did not drop a set in any of her singles matches.

Another key factor in the Eagles' victory was junior Chan, who also went undefeated in the tournament. Chan didn't drop a set and lost only 10 games in three singles matches.

Emory coach Amy Smith, who guided the Eagles to recent championships, also played for the school's 1996 national championship team. She became the first woman in any division to win the national team title as a player and a coach when the Eagles won the championship under her direction in 2003.

Emory has more appearances in the tournament than any other Division III women's tennis team, with a total of 44 matches played over 20 years.

Individual champion Hagerman was the first Washington and Lee women's tennis player to win the individual title. Hagerman was the top seed, and finished the 2005 season 37-1.

The doubles championship match, featuring two teams from the same institution, brought Gustavus Adolphus its first individual NCAA national tennis title. The Gusties won the team title in 1990. Houlihan and Palen finished the season 20-4.

It was the second time two doubles teams from the same school played each other in the Division III championship match. In 2004, Emory's Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor defeated teammates Alberelli and Margaret Moscato for the doubles title.
