From zero to 69: Lions race to seventh title in a hurry

Jun 6, 2005 2:44:39 PM

Lincoln (Pennsylvania) entered the final day of competition at the Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships scoreless but stormed back with 69 points to end a four-year Wisconsin-La Crosse victory streak and win its seventh team title.

The Lions won three events -- including Bobby Young's victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse's Nate Olson in the 400-meter dash -- and scored in three others to win by 2 1Ž 2 points.

The title is Lincoln's first since 2000. The Lions also claimed a title in 1985 and four championships during the 1990s.

Lincoln spotted Wisconsin-La Crosse 271Ž 2 points entering Saturday's competition in the May 26-28 meet, but qualified finalists in eight events.

"I told the kids before we left the hotel that for us to win, they had to run a flawless race in all eight events," said Lincoln coach Cyrus Jones. "And for the first time in my 31 years at Lincoln, I haven't seen anything as outstanding as I saw today with those kids across the board. In every event, they gave everything they had. It's just overwhelming to me at this point."

The comeback actually began rather modestly, when Lincoln's 400-meter relay team finished fourth to put five points on the board. But the Lions finished better than Wisconsin-La Crosse, cutting the margin slightly.

The Eagles stretched the lead with Kevin Becker's victory in the hammer throw, but the Lions then stormed back into contention with Young's victory in the 400 meters, followed by Augustine Schmader's win in the 100-meter dash.

"Winning the 100 is amazing because I wasn't one of the top guys coming in," said Schmader, who said he didn't react well to the starting gun but quickly recovered. "I did what I came here to do."

The comeback continued with Jeff Jasmin's second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and Young's runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash, where he again finished ahead of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Olson.

Then, freshman Yudehwhea Gbaa surprised the crowd -- and himself -- with a victory in the triple jump, propelling Lincoln into the lead with a leap of 15.09 meters.

"I was just coming into this event trying to place," Gbaa said. "I had the ninth-best qualifying jump, so I was shooting to score my team some points in this national championship by placing eighth. I've never hit 48 (feet) in my life, and today I hit 49."

Lincoln entered the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay with a 4 1Ž 2-point lead, then survived Wisconsin-La Crosse's victory in that event with its own second-place finish.

In other meet highlights, two competitors successfully defended individual titles, then each finished competition as double champions.

Josh Moen of host Wartburg won the 10,000-meter run, then came back two days later to successfully defend his 5,000-meter run title -- beating Widener's Macharia Yuot in both races.

"It was everything I had," Moen said of the 5,000-meter victory. "That last 150, I was thinking to myself, 'If I'm hurting this bad, he (Yuot) has to be hurting.'... He is the guy I always think about in practice. I love racing him, I've raced against him multiple times, and he is the greatest competitor I've ever faced."

Willamette's Nick Symmonds was the other double titlist. The junior won his second 1,500-meter run in three years, then pushed his career championships total to five with his third straight victory at 800 meters.

Williams' Dan Austin notched the only meet record at the championships, beating a 22-year-old mark held by Hamline's Mike Manders with his toss of 59.76 meters (196 feet, 1 inch) in the discus throw.
