Augsburg culminated a dominant season by capturing the program's ninth national title at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships March 4-5 in Northfield, Minnesota.
The event turned into a procession of accolades for the Auggies as they collected a Division III record-tying four individual national champions, and 10 wrestlers garnered all-American status.
Augsburg's Marcus LeVesseur, the 157-pound champion, extended his career college record to 124-0, which is the second longest streak in any division. LeVesseur, who won his third consecutive individual title, trails only Iowa State's Cael Sanderson's 159-match winning streak from 1999 to 2002.
It also was LeVesseur's third consecutive 157-pound championship.
"This one is a little more special because I'm going to win a team title to back up my own title," said LeVesseur, who defeated Ryan LeBeau of Luther, 7-0, in the 157-pound final. "So, that's a great thing."
The Auggies were runner-ups at the last two championships.
Augsburg's Matt Shankey (125), Mark Matzek (133) and Joe Moon (174) were the Auggies' other individual champs. Like LeVesseur, each repeated as champion by going undefeated, as the Auggies tied the individual championships record for the third time.
Augsburg also claimed four individual titles in 2000 and 2004. The other teams to accomplish the feat were John Carroll in 1975, Montclair State in 1976 and Wartburg in 2004.
After watching his wrestlers record 162 points to outdistanced second-place Wartburg's 1041/ 2 points, Augsburg coach Jeff Swenson was overwhelmed.
"It's just mind boggling," Swenson said. "This will be in the storybooks long after I'm done coaching."
The Auggies say their team chemistry is the reason they were able to tie the mark of having 10 all-Americans, initially set by Wartburg in 2003.
"Every single junior varsity guy gives so much support, and they push us every day in practice," Matzek said.
Wartburg's Dustin Hinchberger and Akeem Carter captured the 141- and 197-pound titles, respectively.
Luther's Matt Pyle and Garrett South won championships at 149 and 165.
The other individual title winners were Duane Bastress of York (Pennsylvania) at 184 and Ryan Allen of Wisconsin-La Crosse at heavyweight.
