Drury swamped the Division II field in men's swimming and diving, winning the team title by 250 points over Cal State Bakersfield at the 42nd annual championships meet March 9-12 in Orlando, Florida.

The top two teams in Division II men's swimming and diving over the last decade finished 1-2 again this year, though in reverse order from a year ago. Drury won its third title overall. The Panthers also won in 1999 and 2003, beating the Roadrunners both times. Drury finished second in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004.

Jakub Jiracek won two events and set a meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Artem Sloudnov broke the meet's oldest record, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 54.99 seconds, .16 of a second faster than Robert Jackson of Puget Sound swam in 1981.

Sloudnov's win in the 100 came over Jiracek, who won four events last year and was gunning for a repeat of that performance. But Jiracek also finished second to Kurt Boehm of UC San Diego in the 200-yard individual medley by .07 of a second on the meet's first day. Boehm's time of 1:47.48 was a meet record.

Drury's Henrik Weible won the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles, the former in meet-record time and the latter by 22 seconds over the second-place finisher, and he finished second in the 200 and 500 to be among the Panthers' high point scorers.

"I thought Henrik did a great job bouncing back from a great battle in the 500, in which he was out-touched, to clinch the 1,650 by a resounding margin," said Drury coach Brian Reynolds, who was named Division II coach of the year after the meet. "I couldn't be more pleased with the way our squad performed over the past four days. Many of our men had multiple swims every day of the meet, and to have them perform session after session as they did was simply remarkable."

Drury also won three relays, including both medley events. Jiracek and Weible powered the Panthers to victory in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Cal State Bakersfield's 14 1/ 2-point margin over North Dakota for second in the team standings was solidified in the meet's final event when the Roadrunners won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Seniors Mike Trujillo, Mark Soho, Seth Dawson and sophomore Piotr Gegotek broke the three-minute mark in the relay for just the sixth time in Division II history with a time of 2:59.86.

Gegotek also contributed with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

"When the chips were down and North Dakota started breathing down our necks, every swimmer elevated his performance, allowing us to close out the night with a victory in the relay and a second-place finish overall," said Roadrunners coach Lance Cansdale.

Cal State Bakersfield diver Ross Farance was named diver of the meet after sweeping both the one- and three-meter events.

Rodrigo Cintra was a force for North Dakota, beating Drury's Weible in the 500-yard freestyle, and Rodrigo Ferreira won the 100-yard backstroke over Drury's Alexis Perdomo. Fernando Alves was North Dakota's other event winner in the 100-yard butterfly. North Dakota also finished second in both medley relays.

Other stars in the meet included UC San Diego's Boehm, who besides setting a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley also won the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle. The Tritons finished fourth in the team standings.

Cole Tedhams of Indianapolis also won multiple events, sweeping the two freestyle sprints. He beat North Dakota's Ferreira in the 50 and Drury's Gegotek in the 100.

Emre Celik of Henderson State set the other of the meet's five records when he swam the 200-yard backstroke in 1:45.45.
