Albert J.H. Sloan II, president of Miles College and a member of the Division II Presidents Council, died November 25.

Sloan was elected to the Council in August 2001 representing the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

He was the 12th president at Miles and the first to be chosen from the ranks of the institution.

Sloan entered higher education in 1963 when he joined the counseling staff at Alabama State University, where he also served on the faculty. In 1971, he moved to Miles, serving as a professor of religion and philosophy, director of public relations, dean of the chapel and dean of students.

After Sloan became president at Miles, the institution's enrollment tripled, the curriculum was redefined and the endowment increased from $650,000 to more than $8 million.

Among many other responsibilities, Sloan chaired the SIAC's Presidents Council.

Sloan earned his B.A. from Albany State College and a master of divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta University Complex.

Sloan held a J.D. from Miles, a doctor of divinity degree from Faith Grant College and a doctor of laws degree from Texas College. He also was a Ford Foundation Fellow for doctoral studies.
