Western State's fourth and fifth runners gave the Mountaineers the decisive edge in claiming the team's second straight Division II Men's Cross Country Championships title November 19 in Chino, California.

Adams State, which beat the Mountaineers in regional competition two weeks earlier, matched their Colorado rival by placing three runners among the top 11 scorers, but freshman Iain Donnan and sophomore Cole Murch grabbed 15th and 17th place, respectively, to clinch the 57-point victory for Western State.

The Mountaineers' Kelly Christensen finished second among scorers to help Western State win its Division II-leading seventh overall team championship.

Teammate Oliver Bodor, individual runner-up at last year's championships, finished ninth overall and seventh among scoring runners, and freshman Kim Hogarth placed 11th overall and ninth among scorers, carving out a one-point lead for the Mountaineers before Adams State's third runner crossed the finish line.

The outcome, however, was decided decisively within the next 25 seconds as Donnan and Murch finished far ahead of Adams State's fourth and fifth runners.

The victory is Western State's sixth in seven years, all under coach Duane Vandenbusche.

Cal State Chico finished third, followed by Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State in competition hosted by Cal Poly Pomona.

While Western State and Adams State played cat and mouse on the sun-splashed Prado Park course, sophomore Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian was posting one of the most dominating individual performances in recent memory.

Naimadu, who beat Bodor by one-tenth of a second last year, left no doubt about his developing dominance of distance running in Division II this time, finishing nearly a minute ahead of Christensen.

The victory puts Naimadu in position to become the first three-time individual winner in Division II cross country history, and it is his fifth NCAA individual championship in only 11/2 years, including his indoor and outdoor track victories at 5,000 meters and an outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase win earlier this year. He also anchored Abilene Christian to a distance medley relay victory at last winter's indoor track championships.

Freshman Jeff Weiss of Slippery Rock posted the best finish by a runner not affiliated with a competing team, finishing third, eight seconds behind Christensen.
