- Problems with the electronic voting sessions caused a slight delay at the outset of the Division II business session. Division II Presidents Council member Art Kirk of Saint Leo's University (who shared administration of the business session with Chair George Hagerty, a first for the division), had to call for seven test votes before the electronic units work correctly. Another small technical glitch occurred late in the session when the microphones on the floor of the meeting room went dead. The problem was quickly fixed, and the session was concluded at 11:30 a.m.
* Another delay arose from debate on Proposal No. 25. An ad hoc meeting of the Legislation Committee's Interpretations Subcommittee was requested to determine if the proposal would permit student-athletes to participate in an entire season of junior varsity competition without it being counted as a season of competition. The subcommittee concluded that the proposal would have that effect. Proposal No. 25 was defeated by a substantial majority.
- The Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee raised about $1,500 at the Convention for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, about double what it raised last year. NCAA President Myles Brand praised the efforts of the SAAC for Make-A-Wish during his State of the Association speech, saying: "This is citizenship and leadership of the finest kind. This is what the majority of the athletics programs in the NCAA are doing. This is the energy for public good generated by the majority of student-athletes. This is what college sports is about -- day to day and year to year." The SAAC also announced plans to raise more money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through an online scavenger hunt April 10. Anyone is eligible to participate by going to UrbanChallenge.com. It costs $5 to register for the contest, and if the keyword "Wish" is typed in, $2 of the entry fee will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
- The end of the Convention marked the end of terms for six Management Council members: Tony Capon, University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown; Dianthia Ford-Kee, Shaw University; Clyde Doughty, New York Institute of Technology; Richard Gropper, University of North Florida; George Klebez, West Virginia Wesleyan College; and Joan McDermott, Metropolitan State College of Denver. Sue Willey, University of Indianapolis, also concluded her term as chair.
- Three new members were elected to the Management Council. They are David Riggins, athletics director at Mars Hill College, South Atlantic Conference; Laure Smith, senior woman administrator at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference; and Glenn Stokes, faculty athletics representative at Columbus State University, Peach Belt Conference. More information on the appointments will appear in the January 31 issue of The NCAA News.
- Three Presidents Council members concluded their terms: Nancy Belck, University of Nebraska at Omaha; John Keating, University of Wisconsin, Parkside; and Frank Brown, Columbus State University. George Hagerty also completed his term as chair.
