Division II Men's Golf Championships

Dates and sites: Five super regionals will be conducted May 2-4, from which teams will advance to the finals May 17-20 at The Club of Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. Armstrong Atlantic State will host the championship tournament.

Field: Eight teams and the top five individuals not with a team will be selected from each region to compete in the 54-hole super regionals. The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. The team and individual champions at the finals will be determined after 72 holes of play. Elimination procedures will not be used. A total of 105 participants will compete at the finals.

2004 champion: South Carolina-Aiken.

2004 medalist: J.J. Jakovac, Cal State Chico.

Top team contenders: South Carolina-Aiken, Cal State Bakersfield, Central Oklahoma, West Florida and Rollins were the top five teams in a recent Golf Channel poll.

Championships notes: Armstrong Atlantic State won the Southeastern Collegiate title April 5 by six strokes over Rollins. The Tars' Dan Walters won medalist honors in that tournament ... Ferris State won the Findlay Oiler Invitational April 10 over Wayne State (Michigan) and Grand Valley State. Freshman Alex Balog of Ferris State won medalist honors there. Cal State Bakersfield bested Cal State Stanislaus at the Sonoma State Invitational April 5. Senior Mark Baker won his first collegiate tournament for the Roadrunners ... Through mid-April, Rollins' Darren Lundgren led Division II in fairways hit and greens in regulation ... Florida Southern has won the most team titles (6) in the event's 42-year history. Columbus State has won five.

 

Division II Women's Golf Championships

Dates and sites: Four regionals will be conducted May 2-3. Regional hosts are Florida Southern, Grand Valley State, Western Washington and Winona State. Western New Mexico will host the finals May 11-14 at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course.

Field: Two teams and two individuals from each of four regions, for a total of 48 competitors.

2004 team champion: Rollins.

2004 medalist: Charlotte Campbell, Rollins.

Top team contenders: Rollins, Central Arkansas, Florida Southern, Grand Valley State and Central Oklahoma were the top five teams in a recent Golf Channel poll.

Championships notes: Rollins and Florida Southern may take their conference rivalry to a national level, as both teams are championship-caliber. Rollins features defending medalist Charlotte Campbell, Marian De Biase, who tied for third last year, and Ulrika Ljungman.  Pamela Feggans and Lindsey Bergeon lead Florida Southern. The two schools have won the last five team titles, Rollins the last two and Florida Southern the three before that. Methodist won three of the first four championships when the event included institutions from Divisions II and III.

 

Division II Softball Championship

Dates and sites: Eight six-team double-elimination regionals will be held on the campuses of competing institutions May 12-15. The eight winners advance to play in a double-elimination format at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex, in Salem, Virginia, May 19-23.

Field: Forty-eight teams.

Selection date: May 9.

2004 champion: Angelo State.

Top contenders: West Florida, Northern Kentucky, Humboldt State, Kennesaw State, Shippensburg, Angelo State.

Championship notes: West Florida has advanced to the NCAA tournament in six of the last seven years ... Heading into its game April 19, Northern Kentucky was 36-0 and nearing the Division II softball record win streak of 40, which was set by Kennesaw State in 1995 ... Humboldt State had its 35-game win streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Western Washington April 17 ... Through April 10, Shippensburg was leading the nation in hitting with a team batting average of .391.

 

Division II Women's Tennis Championship

Dates and sites: First and second rounds are May 5-7 at sites to be determined. The finals are May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Field: A maximum of 64 teams will play a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites to determine the 16-team final field. Twenty conferences will receive automatic qualification. The remaining 44 teams will be selected at large.

Selection date: April 27.

2004 champion: Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Top contenders: The following are ranked No. 1 in their respective regions in the most recent Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee poll: Bloomsburg (East), Armstrong Atlantic State (Mid-Atlantic), Lynn (Southeast), West Florida (South), Northwood (Great Lakes), Abilene Christian (Central), Emporia State (North Central) and Brigham Young-Hawaii (West).

Championship notes: Brigham Young-Hawaii could win the championship for the fourth consecutive year, having captured every national title since 2002. The Seasiders also won this event in 1999 and 2000. Brigham Young-Hawaii has won 120 consecutive dual matches ... Only Lynn, another contender for this year's title, has defeated the Seasiders in Division II play. The Knights beat Brigham Young-Hawaii for the 2001 title. Lynn also won the 1997 and 1998 crowns ... Armstrong Atlantic State also was a force in the 1990s, winning the 1995 and 1996 championships. The Pirates are strong again in 2005 behind the solid play of junior Luisa Cowper.

 

Division II Men's Tennis Championship

Dates and sites: First and second rounds are May 5-7 at sites to be determined. The finals are May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Field: A maximum of 64 teams will play in a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites to determine the 16-team finals field. Seventeen conferences receive automatic births. The remaining 47 teams will be selected at large.

Selection date: April 27.

2004 champion: West Florida.

Top contenders: The following are ranked No. 1 in their respective regions in the most recent Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee poll: Assumption (East), South Carolina Upstate (Mid-Atlantic), Barry (Southeast), West Florida (South), Northwood (Great Lakes), Drury (Central), St. Cloud State (North Central) and Brigham Young-Hawaii (West).

Championship notes: 2004 champion West Florida has a 77-4 record since the start of the 2003 season. The Argonauts had 33 victories in their championship season, a school record ... As of early April, Assumption had won 81 consecutive matches in conference play, and the Greyhounds have won more than 90 percent of their matches in the last five seasons ... Drury was holding a four-match winning streak in early April, with its last loss coming at the hands of top-ranked West Florida ... Brigham Young-Hawaii is fielding a young team of mostly freshmen and sophomores. The Seasiders had posted a 16-5 record this season as of early April.
