Armstrong Atlantic State won its first Division II Women's Tennis Championship since 1996 and third overall with a 5-3 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii May 14 at Altamonte Springs, Florida. Brigham Young-Hawaii, which had won 130 consecutive matches, had been vying for a fourth straight crown.
Both teams came into the championship match undefeated. With the win, Armstrong Atlantic State finished the season 30-0. Brigham Young-Hawaii completed a 29-1 slate. The Seasiders had won the last three consecutive championships and five of the last six.
The two finalists split the top two doubles matchups. Armstrong Atlantic State's Manuela Emmrich and Caroline Grage posted an 8-3 win over Tetyana Bula and Petra Teller in a match many expected to be closer. Emmrich and Grage were ranked eighth by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and Bula and Teller were seventh.
Brigham Young-Hawaii's top-ranked team of Jing Jing Liu and Adrienn Hegedus defeated the Pirates' Luisa Cowper and Laura Peaty, 8-5. Cowper and Peaty are ranked fourth.
Dziyana Nazaruk and Johanna Dahlback gave the the Pirates the lead with a victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii's Guiranna Korinihona and Crustal Schwenke.
The Seasiders took the first two singles matches on strong play from both Liu and Hegedus over Cowper and Nazaruk, but the Pirates took the remaining matches to win, 5-3. Among those victories was an unexpected one from unranked Emmrich, who upset No. 14 Teller. Dahlback, ranked 21st, knocked off Bula, ranked seventh, in another upset for Armstrong Atlantic State.
With Brigham Young-Hawaii's 130-match winning streak snapped, the Pirates now hold Division II's longest winning streak at 30. Since becoming a member of Division II in 1998, Brigham Young-Hawaii has lost only two women's tennis matchups -- the 2001 national championship to Lynn and the 2005 championship. The Seasiders' Division II record is 233-2.
Armstrong Atlantic State won the championship in 1995 and 1996 and finished second in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002.
