The Cardinal racked up a record-high 146 points but still scored a 35-point victory over defending champion Colorado November 21 at the Division I Women's Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.
It is Stanford's second victory in three years and third since 1996.
The young Cardinal team -- one junior, three sophomores and one freshman provided the scoring -- posted possibly the widest differential for a winner between the first and fifth runners in the championships' 25-year history, ranging from sophomore Arianna Lambie's seventh-place finish to Teresa McWalters' 70th-place finish among scorers.
But it still was more than good enough for the win, as Colorado posted an even wider differential -- ranging from Christine Bolf's sixth-place finish to Jackie Zeigle's finish in 71st place.
"We didn't know what to expect watching the end of the race," said first-year Cardinal coach Peter Tegen, who moved to Stanford in August after coaching for 30 years at Wisconsin. "Our order was topsy-turvy throughout the race."
When everything sorted itself out, Tegan had collected his third cross country national championship, counting the two he won with the Badgers in 1984 and 1985.
Colorado was the only team that managed to place two runners among the top 10 scorers, putting Liza Pasciuto just two places behind Bolf and seven places ahead of Stanford junior Kathleen Trotter.
But Stanford freshman Lindsay Flacks more than made up the gap between the No. 2 runners by finishing 13 places ahead of her No. 3 counterpart, the Buffs' Jenny Barringer. Cardinal sophomore Lauren Centrowitz then clinched the win by finishing 29 places better than Colorado's fourth runner, and sophomore McWalters finished one place ahead of Zeigle.
Stanford's Lambie actually led a substantial portion of the race, but ultimately faded a bit in the individual competition. However, her performance helped the Cardinal overtake top-ranked Duke in the team standings midway through the race.
"It was a gutsy race by Stanford," Lambie said. "I'm still emotional right now. We put so much heart into the season. It was the toughest race we have ever won."
Duke slipped to third place, just four points behind Colorado. Arizona State finished fourth and Illinois finished fifth -- its best placement ever at the championships.
The pace was fast on a LaVern Gibson Championship Course that was much drier than at last year's championships -- so fast, in fact, that individual titlist Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona set a course record with her winning time of 19:33.9.
Nilsson won the race by 12 seconds over Caroline Bierbaum of Columbia-Barnard, and bettered 2002 champion Shalane Flanagan's course-record time by two seconds.
"I did not want to break away as early as the pack separated, but it ended up working out for me," Nilsson said. "I had no idea about the lead that I had going into the home stretch. I just wanted to finish hard and give it my best."
Nilsson, who sat out the cross country season last fall, finished 12th in 2002 and 10th in 2003. She is the sister of two-time Lumberjacks track titlist Ida Nilsson.
